April 22, 2010 ‘I didn’t kill her’ Freeland backs out of last minute plea deal, new details revealed in Ward case In the eleventh hour, John Thomas Freeland Jr. backed out of his plea deal, claiming everything was correct in the legal paperwork, except he was not the one that fired the fatal shot that killed 61-year old Carolyn Ward on March 7 of last year. Freeland was in a Jackson courtroom last Wednesday before Judge Roy Morgan as his attorneys filed a motion to suppress evidence. After being counseled by his attorneys before his suppression hearing began, it was understood by the judge, prosecutors and his own defense team, Freeland had decided he would enter a guilty plea to all counts he was facing, including first degree murder as he signed a plea form. However, as Judge Morgan asked the defendant if his statement in his plea the prosecutor just read aloud was substantially correct as far as the facts in his case and he understood that he was admitting guilt to first degree murder, Freeland began nodding his head no. “No, I don’t understand how I’m supposed to be admitting guilt to that,” stated Freeland. “Everything is true except for the part that I pulled the trigger, I didn’t kill her.”
