Children’s Cancer Association Community Investment Report Fiscal Year 2014 For children diagnosed with serious illness and their families, every moment is precious. At CCA, our goal is to transform as many of those moments as possible — with joy.

FOUNDER’S LETTER: Joy Matters Significant and symbolic change occurred this year at the Children’s Cancer Association. Our relocation to an 8,500 sf headquarters in the historic Albers Mill Building, coupled with a powerful new three-year growth strategy, poises our organization to propel JoyRx farther than ever before. We embrace this growth path and the responsibility it demands. It’s true, we take joy seriously at CCA. We’ll never stop trying to find innovative ways to serve children and families. To the amazing leaders and friends who stand with us, who step up and in every single day to allow us to create moments of joy for thousands of kids battling life-threatening illness – we say “thank you.” Your investment has resulted in some pretty amazing accomplishments in the past year:

CCA has been a labor of love for nearly two decades. I encourage you to share any suggestions, comments, or ideas — I want to hear them all. Know that we are singlemindedly dedicated to providing kids with the most powerful joy experience in the world.

Increased the number of individual children served by 71% and reached children and families in all 50 states through MyMusicRx.org and the Fourth Edition of our Kids’ Cancer Pages

Ensured every service and program remained FREE to children, families, and hospital partners

Inspired 24.3% revenue growth, influenced heavily by the generous in-kind contributions to our new headquarters – we like to call our new home “the office that friendship built”

Attracted national endorsements for our MyMusicRx program from artists such as Pharrell Williams, leading to 96M social media impressions

Earned a fourth consecutive 4-star Charity Navigator rating, ranking CCA among the top 7% of nonprofits in the nation for excellence in financial stewardship, transparency, and accountability

I am pleased to present our fiscal year report on our mission impact and philanthropic support. The stories of the extraordinary kids and families featured in this report reflect the good things your contributions have made happen. Thank you for believing Joy Matters. In gratitude,

Please feel free to email me at REllis@JoyRx.org, give me a call at (503) 244-3141, or find me on Facebook.

Guitar Hero Micah is a shining star of the MyMusicRx program. Between the ages of 15 and 18, Micah was in the hospital many nights battling chronic infections from an immune deficiency disorder and an incurable disease called Bronchiectasis. It was during that time CCA’s trained music specialists first taught him how to play the guitar.

MyMusicRx Micah is one of the 4,400 Oregon and Southwest Washington children and teens who received bedside “music medicine” visits last year. Trained MyMusicRx Specialists provide tailored music experiences in every unit of the pediatric hospitals we serve with mobile carts featuring a lending library of instruments and interactive technology. Total in-hospital service interactions in FY14 counted 20,200. In additon, volunteer musicians filled hospital hallways and lobbies with 210 hours of soothing, acoustic music.

Now, Micah’s world is filled with music. He’s continued to write songs and sing beyond the walls of the hospital, and even caught the attention of multi-instrumentalist and producer, Chris Funk, of The Decemberists and Black Prairie, and a CCA Board Member.

MyMusicRx.org, CCA’s digital music experience, attracted 14,200 interactions last year; 3,515 individuals enjoyed in-hospital concerts and live concerts outside the hospital.

Chris was inspired by Micah’s ability to find the strength and energy to write and perform amazing songs through adversity. He invited Micah to his studio for a recording session. Of course, Micah was thrilled!

Go to JoyRx.org/musicrx to see Micah and Chris star in a short video about MyMusicRx.

Micah believes in the positive benefits of music. He says,

“I have a big thank you for MyMusicRx and CCA for always being there, being kind, and giving me the joy that simple music can bring. It [music] has more than just healing powers.”

Music helps pediatric patients manage pain, boost immunity, create calm, ease tension, and decrease emotional stress. CCA believes in the healing power of music.

When “Normal” Means Joy Rolunda is the proud mom of five beautiful children: Damina, Tyler, Dupree, Mia, and Mo. Four of her five children have Sickle Cell Anemia. Her oldest son, Tyler, is a carrier. There is no cure for the disease. Rolunda’s graceful demeanor belies her inner prize fighter. She is a champion for her children day in and day out and can hardly keep up with her part-time Certified Nursing Assistant job with so many trips to the hospital. Despite the illness that besets the family, it is obvious to anyone who meets them that they always seem to find joy in each other and their situation. This year, CCA sent the family on their first-ever vacation to the Great Wolf Lodge. Said Rolunda, “The things that my children want and most of the things that they need, I am not able to provide. CCA has shed joy to my children when I couldn’t...

I remember Damina saying to me, ‘It was good to swim just like the rest of the kids. Mom, it felt good to just kinda relax like the rest of the kids.’ And that did a lot for me too, to know that my daughter had three or four days of just feeling like a normal kid without fighting this disease.”

Link Rolunda, Damina, Tyler, Dupree, Mia, and Mo are among the 950 Pacific Northwest family members to whom CCA’s Link program delivered the joy of essential resources, special memories, and tailored support last year. In FY14, Link’s community network of 396 volunteers invested 1,355 volunteer hours, providing 1,700 service interactions to children, teens, and families. See Rolunda’s family story and learn more about CCA’s Link program at JoyRx.org/resourcesrx.

Chemo Pal® Mentor Program Sierra is one of 250 Pacific Northwest children and teens to whom CCA’s Chemo Pal Mentor Program delivered the joy of friendship last year. Trained Chemo Pal mentors devoted 6,730 hours forging and strengthening friendships and family bonds, creating diversion, fun, and activities to kids during their treatment. In addition, 750 family members and their Chemo Pal mentors enjoyed events and activities outside the hospital environment at Timbers, Thorns, and Trail Blazers games,

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Eight-year-old Sierra is as comfortable scrambling on the soccer field as she is riding a big horse around a practice ring. This blue-eyed athlete doesn’t let Juvenile Pilocytic Astrocytoma (a rare childhood brain tumor) slow her down. But she’s not just sporty; this gregarious girl has a creative side, one that shines when she’s hanging out in treatment with her Chemo Pal mentor, Nathalie.

various community and arts-related events, and special CCA-hosted activities. CCA’s Chemo Pal Mentor Program received Oregon Mentor’s very first award for mentoring excellence, recognizing the program for exceeding standards of excellence and quality. To see the Chemo Pal Mentor Program in action and learn more, watch this short video at JoyRx.org/friendshiprx.

Sierra and Nathalie spend hours doing all kinds of crafts – lots of necklaces and bracelets – and painting and drawing. And, they laugh a lot. Sierra’s mom, Amy, says, “From the moment Nathalie walked in with her bag of fun, she and Sierra were fast friends. She brought energy and companionship and gave Sierra something to look forward to when going in for doctor appointments and treatments. As a parent, it’s difficult to navigate appointments – having challenging conversations with doctors while doing your best to distract your child.

Their friendship gave me a chance to focus on conversations with doctors and relax knowing that Sierra was enjoying her time instead of dreading it.”

A Shining Light Aaliyah appears to be your average starry-eyed seven year old. She loves to make friendship bracelets, dance to her Wii, and hang out with her older sisters. But this little girl has experienced things that most kids won’t in a lifetime. She’s endured six tough rounds of chemo, keeping her in the hospital for nearly a year battling Anaplastic ependymoma, a brain tumor in the brain stem.

Alexandra Ellis Caring CabinTM An average of 40 family members like Aaliyah’s visit CCA’s beautiful Caring Cabin hideaway in a typical month. This free adventure helps restore the energy and hope kids need to battle their illness over the long haul. CCA understands that play can sometimes be the thing that’s needed most. The benefits of nature help to decrease anxiety, stress, and depression, and boost the immune system to fight cancer. For pediatric patients, the Caring Cabin, nestled in 24 acres of surrounding woods with plentiful wildlife and a serene lake,

Aaliyah’s family hasn’t been able to do a lot of the things other families can do. So, a getaway to CCA’s Caring Cabin was just the thing they needed most – an opportunity to breathe the fresh coastal air, walk through the woods, eat S’mores, and create special memories together with aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Aaliyah’s mom, Yesenia, shared,

“Economically, you cannot do a lot of things other families can do. We are really excited that we get to do this, we are really thankful for the people who made it possible too.” “Ignite your light and let it shine” are lyrics from Aaliyah’s favorite Katy Perry song. And shine she did during her adventure vacation at the Caring Cabin.

provides an essential health connection with nature and a way for families to create positive memories together outside the hospital environment. Hear Aaliyah’s story and learn more about the Caring Cabin by watching this short video at JoyRx.org/playrx.

JoyRx Event Spotlights Supporters of CCA come together in so many creative ways to raise funds and awareness that allow CCA to prescribe JoyRx to seriously ill children, teens, and their families when they need more than medicine.

Above, the annual Valentine-A-Thon, a two-day event hosted by 105.1 The BUZZ and FOX 12 Oregon, raised a record $680,000. Pictured from left: The BUZZ’s Mitch Elliott, FOX 12’s Corey Hanson and Mark Nelsen, The BUZZ’s Daria Eliuk, FOX 12’s Shauna Parsons and Amy Troy, and The BUZZ’s Ted Douglass. Below, the annual Children’s Pro-Am, led by CCA Board Member Grant Hammersley (left), upped its game to raise more than $166,000 in its fifth year. Also pictured: Oregon Golf Club Pro, Bob Turnquist, and his wife, Jamie.

CCA transformed the Portland Art Museum into the Legion of Superheroes where more than 600 guests “unleashed their inner super hero” and raised – for the first time ever – more than $1 million through the Hero Gala. Pictured from left: James Mercer, Stephanie Schneiderman, CCA Founder and CEO, Regina Ellis, Patrick Lamb, Ambassador Board Member, Amy Maxwell, and Angela and CS Sheffield, presenting sponsors of the Gala.

MyMusicRx Spotlights A series of living room concerts hosted live at the CCA office, a private concert by k.d. Lang, and the second annual Cabinet of Wonders benefit concert highlight the year. Also, we received a public endorsement of our MyMusicRx program by superstar performer and producer, Pharrell Williams, who included CCA’s “Happy” video in The United Nations Foundation’s International Day of Happiness 24-hour video montage.

Clockwise from top: Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders featuring Jim James, Colin Meloy, Black Prairie, Laura Viers, China Forbes, among others; k.d. GET INVOLVED. BE INSPIRED. Our 1,200+ strong volunteer corps has the power to change the lives of those in need. And, very often, our volunteers find it’s actually their own lives that are changed by the extraordinary spirit of the courageous kids and families CCA serves.

“The interior joy we feel when we have done a good deed is the nourishment the soul requires.” ~ Albert Schweitzer Volunteers help to power every aspect of our organization from directly supporting seriously ill children, to creating new program innovations, and spreading joy throughout the community. They are our heart and soul, fueling CCA’s innovative programs of JoyRx. Share your musical talent....Organize a group to help with landscaping or maintenance at the Caring Cabin....Gather your school mates, family, and/or friends to create a fundraiser or sponsor a family during the holidays....Become a mentor to a child or teen going through treatment in Oregon or Southwest Washington....Lend a hand to support our many events... Individuals, families, and corporate or school groups can learn more about volunteer opportunities by emailing Volunteer@JoyRx.org or visiting JoyRx.org.

JoyRx Without the selfless dedication of our community volunteers, the important work of CCA would not be possible. FY14 volunteers donated 15,000 hours of time to CCA, that’s an in-kind value of $327,000.

The Children’s Cancer Association is an equal opportunity employer. We use a similar approach for volunteers, therefore, people of every race, religion, sex, or national origin are encouraged to apply to volunteer.

Children’s Cancer Association believes: We believe kids deserve long, wonderful lives. Or, at the very least, short, wonderful lives. We believe cancer sucks. We’ve had it, or loved someone who did. We prescribe moments of joy for kids who are in the fight against all serious illness. We create lasting memories for the loved ones who stand beside them. We believe joy grows exponentially when it’s used collectively. We are surrounded by a league of extraordinary heroes who perform amazing feats of compassion, generosity, and love every day. We believe in the healing power of music. We are music-as-medicine pioneers and champions. We believe in purple. We know joy comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes – just like the kids who need our help. We love to laugh. We are not afraid to cry. We spend every dollar wisely. We give hugs freely. We believe in today. We respect our history as a grassroots organization. We embrace our destiny as a global source of JoyRx. We believe these things matter. 1200 NW Naito Parkway, Suite 140, Portland, OR 97209 | (503) 244-3141 | Office@JoyRx.org | JoyRx.org
