Dear friends, This past fiscal year has been an exciting one at Catholic Charities as we joined Catholics around the world in welcoming Pope Francis as leader and protector. We are especially elated because of his renewed focus on the important work of the church — to care for the poor. During the homily at his inaugural mass, Pope Francis reminded us, “The vocation of being a ‘protector’... means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about.” At Catholic Charities, it is the “children, elderly, those in need” who we first think about when we get to work each day. Over 500 staff members live the Catholic Charities mission through their vocation as social workers and educators on the ground in your community. They are teachers helping young minds develop; linguists encouraging immigrants by teaching them English; case workers helping a family find food or shelter; elders helping to care for the young as well as each other; and leaders guiding students on the path to their GED or job certificate. “Today too, amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others,” said Pope Francis. Catholic Charities aims to be that light of hope in times of darkness. It is because of your generosity of time, talent and treasure that we are able to provide hope and keep the light burning for those who come to our door. You’re a young parent. And even though you’ve been reminded how young you are, you know in your heart that you can be a great parent. While many of our programs at Catholic Charities differ in services or clientele, they all share one common goal: to strengthen and preserve the family. Volunteers are at the heart of what we do. They stock shelves in our food pantries. They visit elders at their homes. They mentor youth in their community. They welcome immigrants to their city. They practice what we preach. 4
Where there is injury, pardon; Helping others is a calling. At Catholic Charities, we recognize that sometimes life does not go as planned, that people need a second chance. Catholic Charities’ five homeless shelters offer that second chance. Our shelters aim to be places of transition and we work with area agencies to help families find a new home and a new life full of hope and opportunity. Where there is doubt, faith; Each day, the staff at Catholic Charities roll up their sleeves and help others. When there are too many desperate cries for help, staff become driven to succeed. Social workers try to find different ways to help. Basic needs case workers listen to people who fear homelessness, hunger and darkness. They help clients create budgets and find ways to help lift themselves up with their own hands instead of receiving a hand out. They ignite a light of hope. Your support helps the doubtful find faith.
A Foster Grandparent listens during an appreciation luncheon this past fall. Foster Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to more than 6,600 young people in Massachusetts. At Catholic Charities, ninetyone experienced adults, age 55 and older, utilize their knowledge and experience to help in classrooms from preschool to high school. Intergenerational friendships and positive interaction benefits both parties. This program is part of National Services’ Senior Corps.

Where there is despair, hope; No one should go hungry. Yet, each year Catholic Charities feeds over 100,000 people.
We don’t ask you if you are
Catholic, we ask you if you are hungry. Food insecurity is REAL throughout our state and country. And Catholic Charities food pantries are among the top three pantries in the area fighting the epidemic. We distributed over 1 million pounds of food last year from the Greater Boston Food Bank. And that is just one source of many we use to stock our shelves. Each Thanksgiving in collaboration with the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley, Catholic Charities distributes nearly 5,000 Thanksgiving meals to families in need throughout Boston and the surrounding communities. With your help, we are fighting hunger one family at a time. Your support provides hope. Where there is darkness, light; “You grow up with your child,” said Danyelle, who became a mom just a week shy of her 19th birthday. This is the challenge that young parents face. She would often hear about the disadvantages her son would likely face. “But I was determined not to become a statistic and not to let my son become a statistic either,” said Danyelle. It is that spirit that motivated her to stay in college, balancing research papers with changing diapers. She graduated in May, just after her son’s fourth birthday. “My case worker made me realize what a big impact I have on my son—that he watches me and imitates me,” said Danyelle. She is proud that her son already talks about going to college one day, an aspiration he no doubt has learned from his mom. To all those who make this program possible, like you, Danyelle says, “I am really thankful for the additional support at a time when I was going through so much on my own.” Your support provides light.

At the Education Center in Lynn, out-of-school youth find GED preparation and skills training. While a High School Equivalency Diploma is the goal, teachers help students see themselves as learners, not dropouts. GED classes include Youthworks, Teenstart, and the Education and Parenting Skills Center.
And where there is sadness, joy; Catholic Charities, the second largest provider of social services in the state—second only to the Commonwealth itself—serves more than 1,500 children each year in various child care settings in locations throughout the Greater Boston area, with 85 percent of families receiving subsidized care. This is only a small fraction of the 44,000 children of working families on the wait list with the state to receive subsidies. During the past year we have seen a 100% increase in requests for subsidized child care, a program category that continues to be significantly defunded. Families enrolling in subsidized care programs do not have the capacity to pay the full child care bill, and without this program cannot go to work and earn a paycheck to put food on the table or heat their home. The vicious cycle then continues with the family turning to their local food pantry or social services agency for support, the same organizations that are strapped themselves. Let’s join together and change this truth. Together we can bring joy to so many promising children. Your support provides joy. Preschool children from the Yawkey Child Care Center in Dorchester play in the bubbles during their school day. Catholic Charities serves a culturally diverse population of over 1,500 infants, toddlers, preschool, kindergarten and school age children each year at our seven child care locations in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Lynn, Malden, North Cambridge, Peabody and South Boston. A child’s emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development is interrelated and activities are designed to stimulate growth in all areas.

With your support, Catholic Charities assisted over 200,000 individuals throughout the year and continues to help our neighbors and communities from Plymouth to Brockton to Lowell. A few highlights from the year include: • Overall, 8,021 donors made 14,969 gifts and contributed $6,676,865 in support of the programs and services offered by Catholic Charities • 4,663 donors increased their donation over 2012 and 2,321 donors contributed their first gift to Catholic Charities • During our 5th annual Friends Feeding Families campaign, we raised approximately $900,000 from 3,100 donors • Spring Celebration honored Marshall Sloane, Chairman of Century Bank and his wife, Barbara with our annual “Justice and Compassion Award”. The event took place at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, was attended by over 500 people and raised $1.3 million to support basic needs programs and services It goes without saying that those we serve truly value your assistance. Catholic Charities appreciates and thanks you for your friendship and charitable contributions to our mission. Because of our donors, we are able to provide our clients with basic need services such as food, utility and rental assistance, in addition to our programs in child care, refugee and immigration services and adult education. Spring Celebration 2013 honoring Barbara and Marshall Sloane May 15, 2013
At its annual Spring Celebration, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston honored Barbara and Marshall Sloane of Century Bank with the 2013 Justice and Compassion Award. Marshall Sloane is the founder of Century Bank and now serves as its Chairman of the Board. Mr. Sloane and his wife, Barbara, were honored for their extensive philanthropic contributions including their support of social service organizations, nonprofit healthcare providers, and educational foundations throughout the community. As a family, the Sloanes are well known for devoting countless hours and resources to causes that deeply affect the lives of people throughout Massachusetts. This annual Catholic Charities event raises funds to provide basic resources such as food, utility and rental assistance to those in need, and support a wide range of educational programs for children and adults that provide paths to self-sufficiency.
