Cantor Hayley Kobilinsky

Hayley is overjoyed to be marking her 10th year as the Cantor of Congregation B’nai Yisrael of Armonk. She was ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music (DFSSM) in 2005, after earning a Baccalaureate degree in Psychology from Columbia University in 1999. While a student at Columbia, Hayley also studied voice at The Juilliard School of Music. Her musical training began early on; she studied piano, violin, and flute, and began singing opera at the age of 10. She has performed in 30 operas, operettas and oratorios, and well over one hundred concerts. Guitar is the most recent instrument Hayley studied, but is also the one she uses most often in the synagogue. Hayley was asked to join the faculty of her alma mater Hebrew Union College in 2011, and became an adjunct faculty member. She teaches Shalosh Regalim (Three Festivals) repertoire workshop courses to cantorial ordination and certification students. Cantor Kobilinsky has been the President of Kol Hazzanim-Westchester’s Community of Cantors since 2010, and has helped coordinate and edit (as well as author) cantorial contributions to the Ten Minutes of Torah outreach program of the URJ since 2013. Hayley has a particular interest in Yiddish, which is one of the 5 foreign languages she has studied. She enjoys using Hebrew and Yiddish, as well as Ladino, in worship and performance settings. She became an expert on a little-known group of women who performed cantorial music in a masculine style of singing, from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. This group, known as the Chazzantes, became the topic of her Master’s Thesis. Hayley has performed their music and lectured extensively on this topic, including as a visiting faculty member to the B’nai Brith Institute of Judaism in 2007 and as a guest performer at the Charlotte Yiddish Institute in 2006, both held annually at the Wildacres Retreat in North Carolina. People often ask Cantor Kobilinsky what led her to devote her life to the cantorate. The sole grandchild of Holocaust survivors, Hayley always felt deeply connected to her Jewish heritage, and committed to the preservation of the Jewish people. She also developed a great love for music, and used her musical talents in the choirs and other performances at her home synagogue, Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach, NY. There, she was mentored under the wing of her cherished friend and colleague Cantor Bette Cohen. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Hayley decided to heed her calling. She would combine the things she loved, Judaism, music, and family, and make them her career. The rest, as it is said, is history. Hayley and her husband Benjamin live in Bedford Hills with their son, Samuel, who enjoys singing along with his mommy at services.

CANTOR HAYLEY KOBILINSKY Dear Fred and Barby, Mazel Tov! I am so glad to be co-honored with you tonight. Not only have you both been extraordinarily involved with the running of our Congregation, but you have been wonderful friends to me, Ben and Sammy. It has been an honor to be your Cantor at so many past life cycle events, from the B’not Mitzvah and Confirmations of Matty and Mallory, to the awarding of the Peyser Award in your honor. It is impossible for me to think of you and not smile. I always enjoy chatting with you about the latest Broadway musical, and hope to someday attend a show with you again. That is, if we can ever find the time when the temple doesn’t need us! I couldn’t think of a more perfect family with which to share this honor. Tonight, let us dance with our timbrels* to celebrate the past 10 years (20 for you!) and look towards a wonderful future. May you go from strength to strength! Fondly, Hayley *Dancing with timbrels is a reference to Fred’s favorite song, “Miriam’s Song,” by Jewish popular composer, Debbie Friedman. I couldn’t have left it out!

Barby K . and Frederic J. Siegel

Barby K. Siegel takes great pride in the myriad hats she wears-mother, wife, daughter, sister and businesswoman. Raised in Brooklyn and New Jersey, Barby-the youngest of three daughters-takes great pride in both her family and professional life. The mother of Matty Esther and Mallory Chaya, Barby is CEO of Zeno Group-an award-winning, global communications agency that is part of the Daniel J. Edelman family of companies. Under Barby’s stewardship, Zeno experienced unprecedented growth and industry recognition for its creativity, culture and fearless pursuit of the unexpected. Zeno was named PR Week “Mid-Size Agency of the Year” for a record-breaking three consecutive years (2011, 2012, 2013) and was also named “Consumer Agency of the Year” in 2013 by Paul Holmes. For the past two years, Barby has been named to PR Week’s “Power List” and in 2012 was named PR Week “PR Professional of the Year. From 2002 to 2004, Barby proudly served as president of Congregation B’nai Yisrael, applying her business skills to the challenges of Synagogue life. This was an experience Barby enthusiastically embraced and enjoyed, but ultimately stepped down when her then young daughters asked her to be home more. In her spare time, Barby enjoys cooking, reading, running and lifting weights. And last but not least, Barby has built this life together and in true partnership with her husband Fred. Frederic J. Siegel is the founding partner of Siegel Reilly & Conlon, with offices in Stamford, Greenwich and Westport, Connecticut. His firm specializes in high net worth divorce litigation. Fred is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (where he serves as Chair of their committee on Public Service and Education) and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Worth Magazine has named him as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in the United States and he has appeared on various television stations as an expert on divorce (including Good Morning America, CNN, CBS and WPIX). He has been published in various legal publications on divorce issues and taught family law for four years at the Cardozo School of Law in New York City. Fred was a member of Congregation B’nai Yisrael’s Board of Trustees for six years and served as President from 2007-2010. He has particpated in the Brotherhood, Cantorial and Rabbinical Search Committees, and has been a member of the Choir. He has served as Chair of the Peyser Award Committee and was the Recipient of the Peyser Award in 2012 along with his wife, Barby. When he is not working he loves the theatre, golf and the San Francisco Giants.
