BRENTWOOD The Heart of the Desirable Westside

A leafy neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles (not to be confused with the City of Brentwood in Northern California), Brentwood’s 90049 ZIP code is one of the most desirable in greater L.A. With its convenient proximity to UCLA, the beaches, and freeways leading to the San Fernando Valley in one direction and LAX in the other, Brentwood holds huge appeal.

Sub-districts within Brentwood range from apartments to gated communities, each distinguished by architecture, lot size and community “feel.” Neighborhoods include Brentwood Circle, Brentwood Glen, Brentwood Park, Bundy Canyon, Crestwood Hills, Kenter Canyon and Mandeville Canyon. Areas that were once considered modest have seen ambitious remodeling that has pushed home prices higher and higher in recent years.

As with much of California, Brentwood was a Mexican land grant community that was settled in the 1880s. Bounded on the south by Wilshire Boulevard, with its skyscrapers, restaurants and shops, Brentwood rises gradually

northward into the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. Two grand boulevards running east and west divide the area. One is Sunset Boulevard, which begins in Downtown Los Angeles and winds its way to the Pacific Coast Highway; the other is San Vicente Boulevard, where a wide grassy median once occupied by the rails of the Red Car line is now home to stately coral trees. There is a vibrant commercial district on San Vicente and another at Barrington and Sunset. Active community and homeowners’ associations tend to the district’s well-maintained quality of life.

In addition to celebrity neighbors and star-quality residences, Brentwood has some well-recognized landmarks. Perched above the northeastern corner of Brentwood is the Getty Center. The Brentwood Country Club, built in 1941, occupies a serene oasis tucked among residential streets. Mount Saint Mary’s University is also in Brentwood, along with seven private and two public schools.

NEFF’S ENDURING CALIFORNIA STYLE

What exactly makes California so incredibly special? Here in the Golden State, you lose yourself in the magic and charm of the surroundings and immerse yourself in the beautiful views and landscape. This fabulous-yet-classic California lifestyle has been perfectly captured in the state’s architecture by one of the region’s most renowned architects – the late Wallace Neff. Neff successfully managed to take that extravagant, hassle-free vibe and turn it into many one-of-a-kind homes that largely shaped the landscape of California. He combined Spanish Colonial architectural style with Mediterranean design techniques, which have been our state’s signature for quite some time, developing the quintessential California style.

Key features include Spanish tile, plank wooden arches, stucco walls, and overall subtle and natural colors throughout. A Spanish home might remind you of a resort with its emphasis on terraces in almost every room and courtyards, with floor-to-ceiling windows and double doors that create a natural flow from the inside to the outdoors. With the mild climate of the West Coast, it’s all about indoor-outdoor living.

Neff’s style gained popularity among the rich and famous in Southern California during the early half of the 20th century. His notable work includes Singer Mansion, Gillette Mansion, the Gates Residence, Libby Ranch and the Pickfair Estate. According to Curbed LA, Neff also designed the 1926 house “that Howard Hughes crashed a plane into,” as well as Palm Springs’ Bourne Estate. Some of Neff’s most well-known clients include the late Charlie Chaplin and Judy Garland, as well as Madonna and Guy Ritchie – all major fans of the legendary architect.

Finally, one of Neff’s biggest achievements was the Bubble House, a dome-shaped structure intended to provide inexpensive housing in America near the end of World War II. His work is truly timeless.
