“So…you plan weddings?” Explaining our Profession and Communicating Strategies for Public Education (1.25 CM*) Community Engagement Kelli McCormick, AICP, Senior Associate-in-Charge | Kendig Keast Collaborative Have you ever found it difficult to attempt to communicate a planning topic only to be met with a blank stare? Based on experience from the public, educational and private sectors, this session will provide tips and strategies for talking to people and groups of all ages with different levels of interest and knowledge when trying to communicate planning concepts and jargon, including comprehensive plans, zoning regulations, etc. Come and see how you can make your job easier! Strategies include how to present to children, talk with allied professionals (architects, engineers, etc.), work with developers and realtors, and explain concepts to the general public.

Lake City: Revitalization of a Small Town (1.25 CM*) Community Revitalization Jason Springs, PE | Florence County Councilmember A small, rural town in SC was once a booming agricultural hub. When the tobacco industry essentially shut down, Lake City was a town without a major economy to sustain growth and prosperity. Local leaders took bold moves to revitalize the town, attract small businesses and improve the quality of life.

Presentation of the Great Places in SC Award Great Places in SC Award Winner and Community Presentation (1.25 CM*) Great Neighborhoods In 2020, APA South Carolina began our very own Great Places program. We acknowledge and celebrate your planning efforts through this program and


wish to recognize the hard work of planners across our state in making “great communities for all!” This session will include the unveiling of our inaugural Great Places in SC award winner, followed by a presentation of the project. 3:00 pm – 4:15 pm

Collaborative Conservation Planning (1.25 CM*) Environmental Leigh Kane, AICP, Principal Planner | Horry County Planning & Zoning; Lyles Cooper Lyles, Executive Director | Pee Dee Land Trust; Seth Cook, Director of Land Protection | Pee Dee Land Trust Horry County has recently adopted its comprehensive plan, IMAGINE 2040, which places a strong emphasis on preserving environmentally sensitive areas of the County that support wildlife, preserves agrarian lifestyles, and minimizes development in the floodzone. This session will identify how the County identified its environmentally sensitive areas within its plan and how a regional conservation collaborative, known as the Upper Waccamaw Task Force, is helping to implement the plan and the shared priorities of partner organizations. Pee Dee Land Trust, a member of the Upper Waccamaw Task Force, will talk about how they identify their conservation priorities and how conservation easements can help communities implement their land use strategies.

*AICP Certification Maintenance All sessions have been submitted to the American Planning Association and are pending approval for Certification Maintenance (CM) credits at this time. Based on the content of the sessions and the credentials of the presenters, it is anticipated that CM credits will be approved in advance of the conference date.

SC Planning Education Requirements All APA South Carolina conference sessions are approved for continuing education (CEU) required by SC Coe 6-29-1310 et. seq., Educational Requirements for Local Government Planning or Zoning Officials and Employees. We will provide the confirmation in the form of a certificate of attendance within a few weeks of the conference.


Conference Location and Parking The 2020 Spring Planning Conference will be held at the Inn at the Crossroads, located at 128 West Main Street, Lake City, SC 29560. We will meet in The Stables. Please park behind the Inn to preserve prime patron parking.
