Our EAST

Newport’s EAST program utilizes a number of students to work on projects involving a combination of competencies including leadership, growth, teamwork, community service, and technology. These projects, individual and/or group, range from school based to community-wide. EAST is a National program. Within Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, California, and Hawaii, there are 210 different EAST schools in the program. By definition, EAST isn’t your “typical” classroom. Education is different in EAST.

“OUR EAST, in Newport, Arkansas, is no comparison to the ordinary EAST classrooms. We go above and beyond to make all projects and attributions to our school and community beyond what the common mind expects” says EAST Advisor Cindy Black. Students use many unique resources for assistance such as creativity, the capability to learn, patience, the mindset for a better future, and more. Newport’s EAST classroom by no means turns down a project. No matter how small or great the task, all projects get accomplished. “We have a wide variety of ongoing projects from word walls and

fingerprinting for kids, to a recycling program and remodeling our pavilion” says EAST student Jeffrey Balch. Newport excels in all of the EAST Competencies. EAST students are tremendous leaders for Newport High School and the community of Newport. Students grow together with support and respect toward each other and the advisor. Using enormous amounts of teamwork to accomplish every project and challenge they face is a key achievement. By applying community service through the majority of the projects, students use technology

EAST Clothes Students If students come to school wearing the wrong uniform or who have financial issues and cannot afford the proper school uniform, they can simply go to the Uniform Store which is functioned by EAST Lab. The community of Newport may donate money or new/used uniforms. Graduated seniors who don’t want their uniforms anymore may

donate their old uniforms to the store as well. The store has had many donations, including donations from the Newport Service League, the Diaz Baptist Church Ladies, and the Episcopalian Ladies. Teamwork is shown with the Uniform Store because EAST students work together to hang up clothes and keep the store organized.

Students are also providing community service because they are helping the students around the town when in need of the proper school uniform.

to complete research, projects, and challenges. Newport’s EAST is special when it comes to branching out and achieving projects; the EAST students never complain and never back down when a challenge is in the way. The facts state that the EAST classroom is, of course, different from your ordinary classroom. Newport’s EAST is even more diverse from the typical EAST classroom.

Technology in EAST Newport EAST students use various amounts of technology. Some “techie items” used in EAST are digital cameras, digital video cameras, USB flash drives, scanners, MACS, Garmin ETrex GPS units, and Trimble GPS units.
