Kirrene and classmate Tom Colby ’53 have been working to create a digital database of memorabilia including photos, yearbooks, Connection magazine and much more to ensure the continued preservation of these important annuals and items. Currently, much of the Kirrene basement is filled with files, pictures and memorabilia as they move forward with this timeconsuming endeavor. “We want these things to be available to people if they ever need them,” says Kirrene. “And, we want them to be able to find them.” Kirrene, who recognizes that memorabilia does not do much sitting in box or a basement, has helped create historical displays in the main hallway and in the admissions office of the school. “I want the kids to see that they are connected to history,” says Kirrene. “They are connected to something very special and very important in the history of Sacramento.” Anyone with memorabilia they would like to share with the school is encouraged to contact Jerry Kirrene ’53 at jkirrene@sbcglobal.net. The Honorable James Long ’55 (ret.) was awarded the first ever Nathaniel S. Colley Sr. Lifetime Achievement award from the Wiley W. Manuel Bar Association (WMBA). The award, named for the City of Sacramento’s first African-American attorney, was given in recognition of Long’s many years of service in Sacramento having worked with Legal Aid Society of Sacramento and for the California State Legislative Counsel Bureau. He was an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Department at California State University, Sacramento and served as special Legal Counsel, Western Region, for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He is also the co-author of the book American Minorities: The Justice Issue. Judge Long was appointed to the Superior Court of Sacramento County in 1982 where he served until 2012. In addition to the award, the group also introduced the “James L. Long Scholarship” which will be given to deserving law students. The Holmberg brothers are getting nowhere fast but they are persistent. Joe ’58 has run over 51,000 miles, Lyal ’60 has run over 84,000 miles while Charles ’66 has notched over 72,000 miles and hasn’t missed a day running since 20 March 1979. Their goal is to complete a virtual relay to the moon (240,000 miles). Joe retired (twice) from the Corps of Engineers as a park ranger and, after flunking that retirement, from Oregon State Christian Brothers Connection - Alumni News & Notes
