The La Salle Club celebrated its 59th annual Baseball Hall of Fame inductees with a fantastic night of renewed friendships, relived memories and reveling in the rich history of Sacramento baseball. The event, held on April 27, in the CB field house, welcomed nine new members into the Hall of Fame including former high school pitchers Butch Metzger (Kennedy) and Fernando Arroyo (Burbank) who competed against each other in the old Metro League before embarking on major-league careers, former Grant High and Japan League star Leon Lee, former Bishop Armstrong star and Christian Brothers coach Joe Gill ’63, Tom Dicktakes (Sacramento High), Mike Green ’62 (Bishop Armstrong), Gene Sackett (McClatchy), Gary Szakacs (Mira Loma) and former Sacramento Bee staff writer Nick Peters, who covered the San Francisco Giants for 47 years. Honorees are selected based on a number of factors including age (60 years or older), success as a player, manager, scout, umpire or writer, and a connection to the region. The La Salle Club was established in 1937 to raise money for sports teams and equipment at the school. That tradition continues today as proceeds from the dinner benefit CB’s athletic programs. Mark your calendars for the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame dinner scheduled on Saturday evening, February 15, 2014!
