Update from DofE A Week at The Opera Homework Support

Introducing: Homework Support Hello there, My name is Mr Targett and I am Acting Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for homework. In order to support students having difficulty with their homework, and make sure that homework is done, I am introducing after school Homework Support Sessions from Monday 23rd September. From Monday 23rd, students who have not brought in their homework will be expected to stay for a half-hour Homework Support Session in the Main Hall after school. This will enable us to find out why they have been unable to do their homework and help them complete it before they leave school. If a student does not hand in their homework during the morning session (Periods 1-4) they will be expected to attend the Homework Support session on the same day. If the lack of homework arises in Periods 5 or 6, the support session will be a half-hour at the end of the following school day. We will inform you by phone or text message.

Year 11s—It’s time to begin to schedule visits to colleges to take a serious look at where you might imagine your future after next summer. The college prospectuses are now published and are arriving this month at school and will be available from the library. Start researching what each college offers that you think you might enjoy and do well studying. There are alternative options as well, but my advice to you all, is to explore all the options in order to make the best decisions, for you. I would expect you to apply for more than one college, in order to keep your options and choices as broad as you can. You can receive offers from more than one college and wait until enrolment to actually decide which option to accept. If you have questions, please visit me in the library. MRS WARD

UPDATE FROM: DofE Our first Silver DofE group have completed their Expedition section by doing a presentation to parents, friends and their assessor on the evening of 4th September in the Main Hall. The group talked about their experiences and their development during their training and expedition. They finished off their informative and humorous presentation with this: “We are like the cast from the Wizard of Oz. Together we went on a journey and we had to work as a team to overcome the obstacles we faced. At the end of it we have all gained something invaluable and we are stronger because of it.

A Week at The Opera It was a wet windy Monday at the start of August when two Cranbourne Y11 students, accompanied by Mr Knatt, set off to the Grange Festival in Alresford to work with a professional opera company on devising an opera in just 5 days! 75 young people across 3 creative arts disciplines (Drama & Music, Dance and Design) and 7 schools met at 9am with the creative team including two professional Opera Singers and an Award Winning Director with nothing more than a poem and a theme. Over the course of the week, the students worked tirelessly on music, songs, drama, sets and props to devise an Opera that tackled the ideas of self-image and the impact that social media has on these. For the two Cranbourne students, Gemma Frankland and Rhys Wilkins, they were a credit to the school and Karen Gillingham (our director) commented on the focus, discipline and commitment of our two GCSE students. I was incredibly proud of the students and their want to work on such a brilliant project, and am glad I had the opportunity to observe and work with them in this light.
