NOTHIN’ BUT A G-THANG

Nothin’ But A G-Thang was an ode to Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, information architecture, and the letter G. The challenge was to create a collection of G’s. Through photography and found imagery, G’s on signs came to have a whole new depth and a gangster meaning. This project manifested into a website, a 3D space and a short zine.

A collection of G’s focused on relaying the history of the G from creation to it’s contemporary slang meaning.

The OG’s Starting from a series of photos taken in KCMO, Victoria, KS & Denver, CO. I “extracted” the G’s from their photograph to examine the many different personas the G can take on.

NOTHIN’ BUT A G-THANG The Web

This website was my first time coding using HTML/CSS. My favorite part is the cursor, because it changes to one of the G’s in my collection on hover. The site is broken into 3 sections, and research.

A Publication In print I was concerned with the linguistics of the word. Exploring pattern and layering I created a small zine about the history of the letter G. From the smallest detail of each G being called out typographically to the bigger picture of information, the G is the guiding element.

A research spread from the publication. Each G in the book is bolded and italicized to emphasize the G in use.

In A Space I collected G’s from 3 central locations and created a set of posters, a website with research and a spatial element. This started from a series of photos in Kansas City, Missouri, Victoria, Kansas and Denver, Colorado. I then “extracted” these G’s from their original location to examine the many different personas the G can take on. These G’s then ended up as the G’s on the wall in my spatial element. I did research that gave it a basis in hip-hop, typography and linguistics.

FATE CONFERENCE The biennial Conference held by the Foundations in Art: Theory and Education group was hosted by KCAI in 2017. I had the opportunity to design the event program. This was done over the course of 2 months. The inspiration was to use typography as hierarchy, giving visually oriented people a visual language to follow. I used imagery from the foundations department to showcase the work of KCAI students. This was a great opportunity to learn how to place ads, as well as work with a lot of information. The conference identity had been decided, so I was able to take the colors and create an elegant, easy to read program.

PROGRAM

Each block of the day was given its own spread, denoted in the left margin.

In between each day of the conference is a large image spread of KCAI foundation student work.

Qdoba Kansas City is a rich town, and Qdoba’s Westport location realizes that. They strive to create an amazing experience for each customer, and they start with their artwork. Qdoba updated their brand and added a bar to their Westport location and I had the opportunity to design the menus and a few seasonal chalkboards.

There were 4 main menus, each with a fun playful theme. These were created with digitally altered hand lettering and printed on chalkboard material. I worked closely with Qdoba Designer Katie Goldman, as well as the printer to create these.

The ever-changing specialty board is hand done and switches out with each new featured item.

The Menus

This menu was based on old dance diagrams, and provides a set of steps, including a share on social media of course.

The second set of menus slid over the sneeze guard and provided a more focused ordering experience.

TYPICA A deep dive into the ways of making coffee through lifestyle. Starting with photography, and research into technique I was able to denote 4 ways of making coffee through a booklet, video and starting to create a brand. Using research and vector graphics I was able to create a product true to coffee that was separated by amount of effort the user would like to put in.
