Annual Review 2015

CAWS has been their voice for over 20 years‌

What we achieved together - 2015 • Reaching the young to teach them respect and compassion: An online database of Humane Education resources, translated into Greek and ready to download and be used by teachers across Greece! www.respect4all.gr

• We travelled 1000km across Crete twice and cared for over 240 donkeys, horses and other farm animals, providing necessary dentistry and farriery services as well as veterinary advice. In addition, we provided the elderly owners with new and better equipment to prevent unnecessary suffering of the animals through injuries caused by the old and badly repaired - head collars, bits and harnesses. We also printed and distribute a ‘How to care for your donkey’ leaflet free of charge.

• The long awaited research on consumer attitudes with regards to eggs was completed and gave us useful insights. For example it indicated that almost half the population of Crete sources eggs from traditionally kept hens in rural areas. However, 82% had no idea what ‘battery eggs’ means! Our campaign is coming soon…

• We produced DVDs for Responsible Pet Ownership and Training of dogs in association with Dogs Trust, with Greek subtitles and distributed them to vets in the area of Heraklion to offer their clients.

•CAWS completed the repeat Public Attitude Survey (baseline 2011) to understand any changes in Responsible Dog Ownership attitudes and was pleased to see significant positive shifts of dog owners behaving more responsibly, which manifested itself in higher % of dogs neutered and micro-chipped as well as walking dog on the lead, cleaning up after the dog and exercising the dog more and leaving dog less time unattended at home. •CAWS created leaflets to promote various aspects of Responsible Pet Ownership - such as neutering, microchipping and walking a dog on a lead - and the Hersonissos Municipality printed and distributed 40.000 of them in the water bills.

•The revamped CAWS website www.crete4animals.gr was launched and is up and running. The website will be further developed, refined and updated on a rolling basis.

• Our volunteer, Eleftheria, attended ICAWC held by Dogs Trust in Portugal and came back with lots of new ideas, knowledge and experience for our future work with companion animals.
