COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to give the student a firm foundation in the skills and knowledge required in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Students study a range of subjects, which reflects the versatility that computers have in society today. The course is oriented towards the development of technical skills such as software development and problem solving. This course may also be of interest to graduates with qualifications in noncomputer disciplines who wish to pursue training in this area.

PROGRESSION/CAREER OPPORTUNITIES This course will give students a firm foundation in the skills required for employment in the Information Technology sector. Ireland is widely recognised as Europe’s premier location for software development. Most of the major multinational

software companies such as Microsoft, Google, Ebay, Symantec and Amazon have based their European operations centres in Ireland. Examples of opportunities that exist in this vibrant sector are systems analyst, computer programmer, software engineer, quality assurance, technical writer, database administrator and technical support. Careers also exist in the areas of project management and marketing and sales. Students who successfully complete this course meet the entry requirements for a range of Level 6 courses offered at Cavan Institute. Students can also progress from this course to Institutes of Technology and Universities through the Higher Education Links Scheme on obtaining a full award.
