Keeping It Local

T

hank you for picking up our latest issue of Charleston Home + Design magazine. If you are a property owner here in Charleston who has a passion for all things related to your home and you seek inspiration to make it the best it can be, then you're definitely reading the right publication! Everyone here at Charleston Home + Design considers it our job—our mission—to showcase the work of hundreds of local companies so you know just who to call when you're ready to tackle a project. That's our job, and our small staff works very hard to present a magazine every three months that's packed with quality content. You may have noticed NASCAR legend Ernie Irvan with his wife Kim on our front cover. After an illustrious career and two near-death accidents on the track, the Irvans have retired to Wadmalaw Island and built a gorgeous custom home. We take you inside so you can see how they live and how they play. After reading Editor-in-Chief Julie Sprankles' interview with them, you definitely get the sense that the Irvans are the type of down-to-earth people you could share a laugh with— whether you're a NASCAR fan or not. Just in time for spring, our annual outdoor living guide is sure to help motivate you to make the most of your outdoor space. And our annual bathroom product guide showcases the hottest selling vanities, countertops, tile, plumbing fixtures, and more (p. 81). We also talked to some of the most talented custom builders in town and asked them to show off the bathrooms they've created either from the ground up or through a remodel. As if that isn't enough, more inspiration is just a few page turns away in a story we call "Cultivated Cottage," in which Interior Designer Rebekah Carter of Red Element Design Studio stages a charming Cassique cottage

on Kiawah Island and nurtures the project to full bloom. In some of our other features, we take you inside AGM Imports and enlighten you on how best to choose natural stone from the thousands of slabs on display. We also look back at the highly successful Charleston Home + Design Show, which took place this past January 29-31 at Gaillard Auditorium, and show you the winning Celebrity/Designer Idea Room. Finally, we re-visit the bathrooms and outdoor living spaces of the Charleston Home + Design magazine Idea House. So we've definitely got a lot to offer you this issue and we ask only one thing in return. Our local economy has suffered over the past few years and that has impacted many of the companies you see within our pages. When you're ready to start your own home project, please call on some of these companies to do the work. And when you do, let them know you saw them here (they love feedback). That's all we ask. Enjoy our Spring Issue and we hope to see you at the Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island April 10-18, where we'll be greeting tennis fans and giving out free issues of Charleston Home + Design magazine at our tent.

Tim Barkley, Publisher

shop talk Ace Preferred Inspections Announces Two New Services WANDO—Ace Preferred Inspections, Inc. has provided home inspection, engineering, and construction consulting services to Charleston area homeowners for over 13 years. Now, the well-established company announces two exciting new endeavors. Builder Buyer Services Group (BBSG) provides new home warranty administration for builders. BBSG serves as the liaison between the builder, homeowner, and subcontractors to facilitate communications and ensure warranty issues are addressed fairly, promptly, and efficiently. Heading up BBSG are Jeffrey (Jeff) Donaldson, owner of Ace Preferred Inspections, and Paul Remoll, who has a solid background in real estate sales. ACE is also proud to introduce Recall Check, a service created to help protect consumers from dangerous recalled products. Mills Brothers Certifications Lead to Impressive Energy Savings HANAHAN—Family owned and operated, Mills Brothers Heating and Air takes pride in providing friendly, quality service to the residential and commercial communities of the Lowcountry. To ensure superior service, owner Brian Mills has recently acquired new certifications to help determine the HVAC system best suited for a home based on several different dimensions. Using the Wrightsoft Heat Load Calculator, Brian is able to establish the correct tonnage of the HVAC system needed for the home before an HVAC unit is chosen. Because a home's building materials and dimensions can dramatically affect the level of tonnage required to effectively heat and cool a home, determining the tonnage upfront can provide savings on energy expenses in the future. Mills Brothers also now offers American Standard Heritage Hybrid comfort systems to maximize energy efficiency in the home. Combining an electric heat pump with a natural gas furnace, the system boasts an average annual utility cost savings of 68 percent. In other news, have you seen this storefront? Since overhauling their exterior, local company A World Apart is hard to miss!

On a trip to Bali in the early '90s, Kim and Philip Przyborowski fell in love with a Victorian fence. Owners of A World Apart, the husband and wife team decided to put it in front of their James Island store to represent the types of furnishings and accessories available inside the charming boutique. In 2008, however, tragedy struck when a motorist ran off the road, plowing through the fence and straight into the storefront. While picking up the pieces in the wake of the disaster, Kim felt a strong urge to try something different. She and Philip agreed it was time for a rebirth of the store. To help them develop a concept, they called in local artist and muralist Karl B. Smith. Once they established their concept, Karl went to work. The artist began by painting the exterior of the building, using three complementary colors to add dimension. Then, to add more interest in keeping with the company's character, Karl meticulously painted a pagoda to top the store sign. New North Charleston Location for Builders Hardware of South Carolina

Joel Hinkel and Doug Hayden in front of their new North Charleston showroom

NORTH CHARLESTON—Since its inception in 1997, Builders Hardware of South Carolina has worked to change the typical fashion in which hardware is distributed. Traditionally sold from a supply house and then passed on to a trim carpenter to install, hardware purchases generally require the builder or homeowner to make multiple visits to both the hardware company and the trim carpenter. By combining the service and the product, Builders Hardware streamlines the process. To further accommodate clients, the company has moved to a new showroom in the fast-growing Peppermill Parkway district. Sharing the space is Charleston Shelving & Mirror, a company that previously worked in conjunction with Builders Hardware out of a separate space. Visitors to the new showroom can expect to find thousands of choices in doorknobs, front door entry locks, cabinet pulls, and bath hardware, in addition to multiple working product displays. Drop by the new showroom at 7268 Peppermill Parkway in North Charleston or, to learn more about getting a free estimate in your own home, call (843) 552-5515 or visit newhomehardware.com.

right now The smells of spring lingering in the breeze, people watching intently from the stands in crisp white shirts, linen dresses, and sweaters draped loosely over their shoulders, and a competitive charge in the air as some of the tennis arena's greatest stars take the court... it's time for Family Circle Cup! Since moving to Daniel Island in 2001 after 28 years in Hilton Head, the Family Circle Cup tournament has cemented its rightful place as a must-attend event in the Charleston area. One of twenty Premier Events on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, the FCC has turned out champions with such notable names as Steffi Graf, Venus and Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati, and Martina Navratilova. This year, the tournament will be held April 10-18, 2010, with over fifty players competing for a piece of the $700,000 prize money purse. For more information on this quintessential Lowcountry experience, call (800) 677-2293. While at the tournament, stop by the Charleston Home + Design magazine tent to say hello to our staff!

T

ucked off of Maybank Highway behind the moss-laden oaks of Johns Island, Colson Elevator Company offers a convenient—and scenic—shopping spot for homeowners seeking elevators and lift products. Originally established in 1985 primarily as an electrical company, Colson has grown and evolved to meet the needs of the community and is currently thriving under the leadership of its matriarch, Allison Williams. Having first come to Colson as an employee in 1990, Allison bought the company from Mr. Colson in 2005. Two years later, she bought a lot on Johns Island and, in 2008, construction began on the current showroom/office and warehouse. To help customers make an educated decision, the showroom is equipped with two functioning elevators to ride and to view the different finishes available. We dropped in on Allison to ask a few questions about the company she loves. There is such a warm, family-friendly atmosphere in your showroom. Is it fun working in

an office that is predominantly female? Most of the time it is fun! We all have different jobs and stay busy doing what we need to do. At what point in the building process or before the building process would you recommend people come to see you? The best time to start planning for the elevator is when the architect is doing the house plans. We can work with the builder and/or architect to ensure that the largest elevator cab possible is designed in the house plans. If it isn’t possible to plan for the elevator that early, we can come in at any stage and do an elevator. There are more restrictions the further along the building is, such as walls already in place. You offer such a wide variety of lift products, along with many options and upgrades. How do you help homeowners find the perfect fit

to suit their own personal style and to meet their individual needs? Most of the time the homeowner already has an idea of the type of product they are interested in. Once we know whether they want to do an elevator, a dumbwaiter, a stairlift, or perhaps a porch lift, then we can evaluate the space they have and go over their options with them. Last question: Do you ladies order in or eat out at any local restaurants during the work week? When we were in the design stages for our new building, we planned for a full kitchen, so we make our own lunches and eat in as much as possible. If we do eat out, we like to try as many different places as possible! v For more information on Colson Elevator Company, call (843) 557-0106 or visit colsonelevatorcompany.com.

ho knew soy could be used to help craft an eco-friendly spray foam? U.S. Home Protect of Charleston (USHP), who specializes in open and closed cell spray polyurethane foam insulations, offers a product that does just that. HeatLok Soy, a closed cell sprayfoam, has a unique ecological benefit in that it is made from recycled plastic waste, soy, and vegetable oils. And while their closed cell spray foam boasts the soy base, both USHP's open and closed cell foams are deemed environmentally friendly because they contain no ozone depleting chemicals, gases, fibers, or asbestos. Furthermore, installation of either product allows builders to utilize smaller HVAC systems, saving both homeowners and builders money. In addition to "green" spray foam, USHP has two other divisions offering green services. Their mold prevention division is the exclusive Lowcountry provider of Forticel™, a proprietary coating technology that prevents mold growth on its coating surface, and which has zero VOCs and no off-gassing. USHP's crawlspace division focuses on creating sealed and conditioned crawlspace environments in both new and existing construction, which can reduce the energy usage of a home by up to twenty percent. the dream of building green

H

omeowners today enjoy more eco-friendly building options than ever before, a result of the increasing momentum of the worldwide "green movement." However, the prospect of visiting a different vendor for every single green product deters many potential green-goers. Recognizing the benefits of green building early in his career, Whatley Bush founded Summit Green Solutions in 2008 to offer energy saving roofing, spray foam insulation, and solar solutions for the construction and/or renovation of residential and commercial projects. Heavily involved with the green movement since 2001, Whatley today serves on South Carolina's US Green Building Council (USGBC-SC) and works with several other green building programs. He utilizes his knowledge of these programs, which includes Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, to help homeowners determine the green program most relevant to their applications.

trends

trends Getting and staying organized is no easy feat, and some people fare far better than others. To help you channel your inner organizer, we found a few furnishings and gleaned a few tips for making simple changes that will help bring order to your dwelling space.

Establish a Routine & Simplify Your Every-Day Space

This charming vanity's top pops open to reveal a hiding place for jewelry and other baubles. Another idea? Stash frequently used makeup inside for quick touch-ups. Available at Terrace Oaks Antique Mall (843) 795-9689 terraceoaksantiques.com

The best advice I have found is to set a routine in place so that you regularly sort out the items in a given area that are not necessary. If it is in the master closet—take the ties or shoes or sizes of clothes you hope to fit back into one day and move them out of your every-day space. You can donate them or, if you are not ready to do so yet, store them in an under-the-bed container. If they remain in the container for a year without being used, you may feel better about donating them. The main purpose here is to make room for the items you want to be able to locate because you use them frequently. Any other items that you keep in that every-day space will merely get in the way. The more you follow this simple principle, the easier it will be to function in that space, whether it be a master closet, a pantry, or a home office. Donate Gently Used Items As most organizational professionals will tell you, clearing the clutter from your home is one of the top tricks for keeping some semblance of order. We're all guilty of hoarding items. Sometimes we hold on to possessions too long out of some sentimentality we associate with the object, and sometimes it's simply a case of not making the time to clear out the old and make way for the new. Once you've made the commitment to pare down your possessions, why not box them up and take them to Sea Island Habitat for Humanity's Restore? Each year, the charitable organization relies on the generosity of donors to provide the financial support necessary to build homes for Lowcountry families in need; in the current fiscal year, they plan to build 11 homes. So what better motivation to finally get rid of those lingering items collecting dust in the corner? You will be doing something good for yourself and, at the same time, doing something good for your community.

Reclaim Your Closet Space Clutter does more than make a mess; it robs us of valuable time and energy. If time is money, all of us need help with our investment. Try this helpful tip in clearing the clutter and reclaiming your closet space: first, remove anything that doesn’t belong in your closet, from books and magazines to exercise equipment. Clear the closet to give you a fresh start. Invest in good hangers to help maintain shape and give good support to your clothes. Before putting anything back, ask yourself, Do I wear it and do I use it? Don’t be afraid to discard and donate. Organize items into zones—for example: pants, blouses, skirts, suits, dresses etc. Organize by color—dark to light, and long sleeve to short, etc. The closet is where you begin and end your day; clearing the clutter and reclaiming your space is an investment that will pay you over and over again.

t age six, budding entrepreneur Tim Smith was picking and selling figs door to door. Today, Tim is at the helm of his most successful venture to date— Windward Shutters, LLC. A Charleston resident for over 20 years, Tim first founded Windward in 1996 out of his home. Now located in a large facility on Virginia Avenue in the trendy Park Circle district, Windward Shutters stays busy equipping homes and businesses with hurricane protection products. During his downtime, Tim enjoys hanging out with wife Kristen, son Garrett Blue, 5 1/2, and daughter Carson, 2, at their own storm-proofed Isle of Palms abode.

Tim and his family at home on Isle of Palms

Tim outfitted his Isle of Palms residence with an array of hurricane protection products. "In addition to the Bahama shutters, hurricane panels were cut and tracks installed on all the porches to allow for a convenient, strong protection in the event of a hurricane threat," explains Tim, "and motorized rolldowns were installed on the rear bedroom windows for privacy and light control." Knowing they are safe allows Tim and his family to focus on fun—fishing, hunting, surfing, eating at favorite food joint Jack's Cosmic Dogs, and, of course, spending time together.

Tim chose festive orange Bahama shutters for the front and side windows to give the house more character and dimension. "We chose that color because we really wanted to liven the house up," he says, "and I've found that shutters really 'pop' when you pick a color that strongly contrasts the color of the home's exterior. The color choices available for the Bahama and Colonial shutters are infinite."

To discuss your own shutter and hurricane protection options with Tim, call (843) 881-6262 or visit windwardshutters.com.

5 Questions with... Richard Moutz

Principal Architect & Owner of R.L. Moutz, Architecture, L.L.C.

BLUEPRINT

A registered architect in South Carolina, Richard Moutz began his career with a BS degree in Architecture from Ohio State University in 1975. He then went on to receive further training in illustration at the Graduate School of Design Special Programs in Architectural Delineation at Harvard University. Richard settled in the Lowcountry in 1985, when he opened an office in Mt. Pleasant. Currently located at the corner of Maybank Highway and Folly Road on Wappoo Creek Drive in the Wappoo Creek Office Park, R.L. Moutz, Architecture, L.L.C. specializes in custom home design, commercial and institutional design, tenant upfit design drawings, and professional renderings. 1) What makes Charleston the perfect home base for your company?

I think the Charleston economy is likely to move out of the current recession faster than most areas. The Charleston area is such a desirable place to live; I think it will continue to attract more and more people relocating here. 2) What are your favorite things to do in the Lowcountry when you're not working?

4) Greatest professional inspiration? The greatest professional inspiration comes from traveling. When getting outside of my immediate location and seeing what the rest of the world is doing, or has done, I return with inspiration. In particular are major American and European cities.

My favorite thing to do after work is to take advantage of our beautiful waterways; I enjoy fishing in the creeks and rivers, as well as sailing on my Sunfish sailboat. I also enjoy traveling and watercolor paintings.

5) Best advice that you have been given?

3) Favorite example of architecture in Charleston?

I think the best advice came from my first employer after college: "Always pay attention to what the clients' needs are and write down everything they say."

My favorite example of good architecture would be the Middleton Inn, which I consider the finest piece of architecture in the area.

To speak with Richard, call (843) 762-0093 or visit rmoutzarchitecture.com.

Once neglected, the pool and entertaining area is now a popular hangout for the home's family of six.

W

e first spoke with homeowner [and Charleston Home + Design magazine team member] Paige Stevenson at the Fall 2009 Custom Home + Remodel Show at the Gaillard Auditorium. She said her pool was in rough shape and wanted us to take care of it. From the getgo, I was excited about doing the repair and renovation work on Paige's pool. I love the challenge of renovating existing swimming pools, because pool renovations generally start with a pool looking its worst. It's gratifying getting it back to looking better and functioning properly. The first step at Paige's was a site inspection. It was in the usual condition: liner coming out of its track, water behind the liner, debris in the pool, and the usual assortment of wildlife living in the water. The 48 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

next step was to de-water the ground prior to draining the water out. This is extremely important; if this isn't done, the bottom of the pool could be damaged. I found the de-watering pipe stubbed up by the filter equipment and hooked our de-watering system to it. The pool was then drained; all debris was removed as well as the old liner. Once the old liner was out, I could examine things that couldn't be done during the site inspection. The general condition of the pool structure was good. The bottom, however, was extremely rough and had left pinholes in the old liner. The solution was to skim coat the entire bottom with the appropriate pool base (a mixture of Portland cement and vermiculite). This will protect the new liner and make it last a lot longer. The plumbing lines were then pressure tested to make sure they were in

good condition (they were) and all gaskets were removed and replaced. Some touch up paint was applied to the aluminum coping to dress it up. Next, the concrete deck around the pool was acid washed and pressure washed to prep it for the application of the Kool Deck texture. Once the texture had dried, the new liner was installed. The liner was snapped in its track and then "Vac-U-Fitted" into place using a liner vacuum. The focus was then turned to the surrounding area of the pool. Paige wanted to add a 12-foot by 20-foot poured concrete seating area to her existing deck, as well as add a pergola to that area. The sod needed to be removed, posts for the pergola were set, and then concrete was poured. Once the concrete had sufficient time to cure, texture was ap-

plied to that as well. I also ran two 3/4-inch PVC lines out to an adjacent landscaped area and added two water jets. Whenever possible, I usually like to add some type of water feature to a pool. They look and sound great and will actually help in your pool's water chemistry because they aerate the water. The last step was to color seal the deck with the color stain Paige picked out. The pool was started up and chemicals were balanced. It was a pleasure doing the work and I hope it provides years of enjoyment for Paige and her family. v For more information, contact LePore's Custom Pools Incorporated at (843) 817-4028 or visit leporescustompools.com.

W

hen homeowners Michael and Ericka Kalinowski from Summerville decided to purchase wood floors, they had specific requirements that had to be met. They wanted a light colored floor with variations in color and grain. Since they have two small dogs, the floor would also have to stand up to the stress of pets and be able to be sanded and refinished multiple times to extend the life of their wood floors. The homeowners selected Kährs American Colonial Maple hardwood flooring. This product has a substantial wear surface and has the ability to be refinished. As their home’s foundation is a cement slab and most slabs are not level, we suggested floating the floor. The floating installation resulted in a floor that is remarkably quiet due to an overall board thickness of 5/8 inch over an underlayment of 1/8 inch. Plantation Shutters vs Judge and Kelly Fowler, owners of Best Buy Blinds, duke it out over the best window treatments for their next home Kelly: I love the look of Hunter Douglas Silhouettes and Luminettes. They have a soft, sheer appearance and provide a romantic feel to any room and complement a wide variety of decors. They can be dressed up or down with drapes or valances, but they also can stand alone. Judge: For a home in the Lowcountry, you have to give plantation shutters serious consideration. They are undoubtedly the best application for street appeal. Lowcountry residents recognize the distinctive look of shutters and admire the homeowners’ good taste! Kelly: Don’t get me wrong—I love plantation shutters too. But, when you feast your eyes on the smooth sheer fabric of the Sillouettes, it just seems so right. I like the ease of how they roll up into a 4-inch box that hides the stacking that occurs with regular blinds. Try that with plantation shutters! Also, Silhouettes and Luminettes can be automated so you can sit back and relax while the view is revealed by simply pressing a button on the remote control. 52 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

Judge: Whether you are on the beach or in a traditional downtown, South of Broad house, plantation shutters can give the right look and function for your home. For the beach house, you can have large (3 ½ -inch or 4 ½-inch) louvers. This provides a great view and maximum light through the louvers. For the downtown traditional home, you can have smaller (2 ½ -inch or 1 ¼ -inch colonial style) louvers with a four panel bifold. This gives you the privacy you need with the desired period style. Also, a horizontal center rail on either type of shutter gives you the ability to close the bottom set of louvers while leaving the top set of louvers open for view and light. Kelly: Silhouettes and Luminettes are perfect for homes with amazing views like we have here in the Lowcountry. If you have an incredible view of the beach or the marsh, the Silhouettes will not block one iota of the amazing view. While both plantation shutters and the Silhouettes provide great UV protection (95 to 99 percent) when closed, the Silhouettes additionally provide 60 per

cent UV protection through the sheer when they are down but the slats are open. Your hardwood floors will thank you! Judge: Properly installed plantation shutters will become part of the window moulding. They can be custom painted or stained to match the trim. It is like purchasing a fine piece of furniture for your windows that will last a lifetime. Kelly: Well, I guess what we are saying is that both products are really great additions to your home. Real estate agents recognize all these products as assets for resale, as you will see both mentioned in the real estate listings. Often, the window treatments on a home for sale will be a pivotal selling point and, with either of these products, it would put the buyer over the top. up to speed Twice in his career, celebrated NASCAR driver Ernie Irvan almost lost his life to the sport he loved. Famous for flying around the track at speeds upward of 200 miles per hour or more, the California native was no stranger to danger. These days, however, the man who battled back from the brink to win countless accolades and awards enjoys a more leisurely pace. He starts each day savoring breakfast with four friends at Sunrise Bistro on Johns Island, and fills the afternoon working the 50+ acre grounds their home is situated on. His day often ends watching TV in bed with wife Kimberly—along with all five of their dogs. Forever a driver at heart, though, Ernie spends a great deal of time chauffeuring his family around. And, although Kim and the couple's two children, daughter Jordan and son Jared, relish the time spent with their father, they have one constant complaint...he drives too slow. Hanging out on the back porch with the pups, the down-to-earth driver and his wife fill me in on what life is like outside of the fast lane. by Julie Sprankles | photography by Michael Costa

Y

ou began your racing career driving go-karts in California when you were nine years old, and were winning stock car races by 16. Did you ever imagine you would go on to become one of NASCAR’s most notable names? Ernie: No, not at all! You don’t even imagine it. I was just doing what I loved to do! I started with go-kart racing, so I just thought

stock car racing was the next normal step. It was all because that’s what my family did. My dad was a racer so I kind of fell into his footsteps. It’s always enjoyable anytime you can do something you love to do and have a lot of fun. The ride wasn’t always so smooth on your journey to becoming a NASCAR sensation… you lost your best friend in a racing accident at a young age, you struggled

to support yourself with odd jobs, and you suffered severe physical injuries from accidents. What has been the driving force that has kept you motivated throughout your many hardships? E: The challenge of racing. It’s not something that is easy to do but it is something that I love to do. I felt like I needed to do it and make it into a career…it’s an American pastime.

Up to Speed

You never got nervous flying around the tracks at such high speeds? E: No…you know, it’s really not the speed that gets you—it’s that sudden stop at the end. Really, it’s all relative. When everyone is going 200 mph, you don’t feel like you are going that fast because everyone else is going the same speed. Now, if everybody’s going 50 and you go by them at 200, you’re

"[After my accident] they told me that if I could ever even drive my little girl to school, that would be a successful recovery. And I was like, No, no, no. You don’t understand. I want to get back to racing." like, Whoa! When you are sitting out there watching the race and everyone’s going the same speed, it doesn’t look like they are moving too fast. Kim: I think what really gets you is when you watch them coming down pit road at 50 or 55 mph and it looks like they are barely moving. I can say that when I used to watch him at the track—we had a motor home there, we were traveling gypsies!— I would rather at times go in and watch it on TV because it doesn’t look as fast. When you’re there and you see them going by and you actually feel how fast they are going… that got me nervous. It’s so different seeing it in person. In February 1991, you drove to victory in the Daytona 500—the most prestigious and lucrative event in stock car racing at the time. Was the victory surreal in light of the fact that, only four years earlier, you had watched that very race on a borrowed black and white television while washing cars for cash? How did you celebrate?

E: As I always say, only in America! You can only have that opportunity to go from having a borrowed TV and be welding grandstand seats and washing cars for extra money and then, only three or four years later, win the Daytona 500. And then I got to go to the White House for a state dinner…I thought I was going for a steak dinner! [he laughs] One thing special I did do when I won was take my Daytona 500 trophy, fold my Murphy bed out of the wall, and stick the trophy on my nightstand. [Ernie and Kim both laugh at this memory] I did get to go to a few parties with my friends, but by the time we left Daytona and drove the

eight hours home, I really spent just one late night out before I got the invitation the next night to the White House. I even went on Letterman. It was real busy, but it was a good real busy. Do you think your rise to fame changed you at all? E: I don’t know if I can be called a redneck, but I really am just an everyday person. I feel very fortunate to have done what I did, but I feel like I was just the same ol’ person after winning the Daytona 500 that I was before winning it. I just really feel like

I’m the same person I always was. Actually, I think I’m more different now that I’m retired—I’m probably a lot more easy-going today than I was before, because before it was hard to get me to sit down and talk because I was trying to do a million things at once. Years after winning the Daytona 500, I was named one of the 50 greatest drivers in NASCAR history but, back then, I was in the thick of it so it didn’t seem like a big deal. You’re always looking at what you’re going to do next; not what you’ve done, but what you’re going to do. I mean, I never wore my Daytona 500 ring until after I retired. At the time, I was thinking, I want to win another one! I think today I am probably more appreciative of everything.

E: Well, it’s a sport that is accessible to everyone. You can have a rabbit ear antenna and pick up the Daytona 500! I think that has really escalated it, and the popularity has grown because it is a good sport. People love to see the cars, especially when they are going fast. But again, a lot of it is because people don’t need cable or satellite to watch it, I think that has just opened it up a lot. The critical brain and lung injuries you suffered in a 1994 practice session accident led doctors at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan to give you a slim 10-percent chance of surviving the night. After making such a miraculous recovery, what prompted your return to racing?

would be a successful recovery. And I was like, No, no, no. You don’t understand. I want to get back to racing. Kim didn’t want the doctor to tell me that because she wanted me to have the hope to motivate me to get better…not to get back to racing, but to get better so I could be a husband and father. People tell me that I must be superhuman to recover like I did, but I tell them, I had nothing to do with it! Everything happens for a reason. One of these days, when I die and I am sitting in front of God, I am going to find out why He saved me. I sit here sometimes and think, Why am I here? The Bible says we’re all here for a purpose and—obviously—at the time of my wreck, I hadn’t served that purpose yet.

You were in the crop of racers who brought NASCAR mainstream, and now it’s one of the most widely watched sports in the country. What do you attribute the growth to?

E: I just didn’t know any better! Kim was involved in the whole thing, and she was there when the doctors told me that if I could ever even drive my little girl to school, that

Kim, that had to be a harrowing ordeal for you, to be faced with Ernie’s mortality in that way. What was going through your mind at the time?

now that it is done, I love it—it is one of my favorite rooms in the entire house. Your family organizes an equestrian club, and Kim and Jordan are both quite accomplished riders. How did your involvement with this extracurricular first unfold? K: For years, we did Paso Finos, a Spanish gaited horse. I had like 17 when we moved down here because we were breeding and selling and showing and all of that. Jordan was really into it. She then started doing jumpers and got bored with the Pasos—I guess the thrill-seeking blood runs in her veins—and so we ended up, when we got down here, having a big sell to get rid of the Pasos. Now Jordan has two jumpers. I can ride jumpers too—if all four hooves are on the ground! I try to be careful because I broke my shoulder three years ago trail riding. and, recently, we gave around 3000 bicycle helmets to underprivileged kids. We’re trying to teach them the importance of safety. If we can have one kid wear a helmet and save his life, then our work is worthwhile. If you can get more numbers out there, more kids that wouldn’t normally wear a helmet will put one on, and the odds get a lot better that brain injuries can be avoided. It was just something that was really important to me, since I had to retire from a traumatic brain injury. I didn’t know anything about these types of injuries until I had one. They call it the silent epidemic. Every 23 seconds in the United States, there is another traumatic brain injury—that’s 1.5 million a year. And those statistics were from 2000, so I’m sure they’ve gone up. utes. Everyone I tell that to is like, Naaaah, I can’t believe that. K: One of the most devastating things about traumatic brain injuries is that there is no cure. That’s why prevention is so important. If you look up the statistics, it usually happens to people in the prime of their lives. Ernie is one of the success stories, having come back from two serious brain traumas, but there are so many more that aren’t so lucky. E: Everybody says, Well, it’s freedom of choice to wear a helmet. Well, your freedom of choice disappears when you crash. If you don’t die, you become a statistic. Think not only about how that affects you, but how it will affect your family forever—all because you didn’t want to wear a helmet. You just never know what is going to happen…that

is why it’s called an accident. If you were to tell someone, If you go down the road right now, you are going to wreck…but you can’t have a helmet, I bet you they wouldn’t go. With the foundation, we are just trying to get people to think about these things in the hope that we can help prevent these injuries. Last question…do you still watch NASCAR? E: When my wife lets me turn the TV on! K: That’s why we have so many TVs! [laughing] No, really though, he watches it constantly. He keeps the Sirius NASCAR station on in his shed all the time—24/7! E: I like to keep up with it. I enjoy watching Kyle Busch. He’s just a little bit cocky, but he has the goods to back it up. v

warehouses in Hilton Head, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Charleston, along with devoting time to wife Alice and their three children, the multilingual multi-tasker rarely stays in one locale for long. On hand to help visitors to the North Charleston warehouse select the material best suited to their individual applications is stone-savvy Melanie Richardson, whom John trusts to hold down the fort when off on his intercontinental importing excursions. With natural stone—granite in particular—being a hot commodity for home countertops in today's market, Melanie often walks homeowners through the various options available for residential use. "With more than 10,000 slabs and 250 varieties of stone, there is plenty to see!" exclaims Melanie. "We have granite, marble, traver-

tine, onyx, slate, soapstone...we urge people to come by and check everything out. We're a wholesaler, so we can't quote pricing, but we can definitely help answer all their questions and assist in finding the perfect stone." Recently, Melanie says, homeowners have been frequenting the warehouse for a range of applications, from new construction to staging purposes. Although some visitors to the warehouse seem to know exactly what they are looking for and take little time finding it, the majority of homeowners need additional assistance. Explains Melanie, "I have stayed with people up to four hours before to help them find what they need. That's what we're here for, to help you! It's nice to be able to use my experience to facilitate people with their selections—when you've seen as much as I

In the end, it's always up to you!" Although AGM leaves the ultimate selection up to the homeowner, they do try to use their expertise to steer patrons in the right direction. For example, says Melanie, "We don't recommend people put marble in their kitchens because it stains and scratches. If you have something that is polished and you get a stain on it, anything you use to try to clean up that stain will eat through the polish and leave a dull mark on your countertop. I always tell people if they want to use marble, use it in the bathroom because it looks soft and pleasing, and is at less risk for scratching and staining." Granite, she elaborates, is the strongest choice for kitchens as it is a hard, non-porous surface.

Adventurous buyers often express a desire to mix stones within their home, most frequently wanting to put a "wild" stone on their kitchen island. "I always tell people," states Melanie, "that if they want to go wild on their island, they need to put something almost solid, like a Black Absolute, on the perimeter." It's a personal choice, however, and she admits there are certain busier stones that still work together. The important point to consider is what you want the focal point of your space to be. That area should be the area you choose to use bolder stone. In addition to granite and marble, AGM also offers many alternative natural stones, such as onyx and soapstone. However, as these stones aren't used as often, many peo70 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

A Few Interesting Facts • Many of the blue-hued stones come from Canada and Norway, and are typically much more expensive because naturally occurring blue in stone is so rare. • Have you ever wondered where the names of the stones come from? Most names honor the region the material came from, and other are named by workers in the quarries. Last time AGM owner John was in Brazil, he got to name one—Forest Blue! • When visiting AGM, it's helpful to Melanie and the rest of the staff if you bring along samples of your cabinets, paint colors, flooring, and anything else you might need to coordinate with your countertops.

ituated around a private garden courtyard teeming with flora and fauna, the Cassique Garden Cottages appear as though they were plucked from the pages of a storybook. The delightfully quaint one story dwellings— which were distinctively designed to reflect the English Arts and Crafts movement of the 19th century—bear singularly a colonial influence and a trademark Kiawah Island

aura. For local Interior Designer Rebekah Carter of Red Element Design Studio, Inc., making the interior of one of these cottages flourish was a matter of playing up the home's Old World European charm, adding a few modern touches, and striking a balance between luxurious and laid-back. From the outset of the project, Rebekah found herself in a unique position. "The homeowners live in California," she explains,

"so I've never actually met them!" Hoping to sell the cottage in the current real estate market, the homeowners knew they needed the help of a professional. Rebekah's first order of business was convincing them to let her use furnishings and accessories to fill the home, which they agreed to—on a budget. "Originally, they weren't going to furnish the home," says Rebekah, "but I pushed them because I knew they would get a great return on their investment." To keep

Rebekah's budget-practical pointer? Pewter Fossil countertops like the ones pictured here give you the same seaside-inspired, organic aesthetic as Oysterstone or Vetrostone at a fraction of the cost.

the homeowners up to date on her progress, Rebekah stayed in constant contact through email. "I did fixed interior selections first—all the tile, paint, plumbing and such—and sent the homeowners pictures," says Rebekah. "When they responded that they liked everything so far, I kept going!" With such an abundance of creative freedom, Rebekah relished drawing on her own style for inspiration." This is my style," she exclaims. "I really enjoy putting a space together when it's something I love!" More importantly, however, Rebekah strove to ensure the interior reflected the Kiawah Island atmosphere. "I'm definitely the type of designer who designs so that if the kids come in wearing wet bathing suits or with 74 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

It's not South of Broad; homes here are meant for comfortable, resort-style living." To that effect, Rebekah relied on durable fabrics such as cotton and linen that would wear well over time and still look fashionable.

When designing a space, Rebekah typically starts with the floor plan to map out the best "flow" for an area and to try to delineate different functions of the space. "I try to not overcrowd the space so that people can move around and the furnishings are flexible," she states, "and I also like to try to give people little special areas, like the window seat in the great room. It's nice to create areas that are both personal and

(top left) Antiqued mirror accents flanking the fireplace evoke Old World glamour, while an oversized seagrass area rug reflects the great room's casual, beachy vibe. (top right) In the master bedroom, a cool color palette and minimalist design create a serene space for relaxation. (bottom left) Rebekah enjoys creating special nooks, like this window seating area—perfect for reading a book or savoring a cup of coffee. (bottom right) French doors in the great room open up to an infinity edge pool overlooking a large pond.

76 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

A large dining table and dramatic chandelier define the dining area. For versatility and practicality, Rebekah chose the wing chairs on the end of the table so they can be pulled into the seating room to avoid overcrowding.

"I'm definitely the type of designer who designs so that if the kids come in wearing wet bathing suits or with sand on their feet from the beach, they're not ruining precious silk." versatile." Rebekah ordered most of the furniture and larger pieces for the cottage through wholesale vendors, but did most of her accessorizing with local art and found objects such as shells. "I like to incorporate local elements, because you don't want to walk in a house and feel like you could be anywhere U.S.A.," she says. "It's neat to find local, odd things that you could never just pick out of a catalog—they simply wouldn't

have the same character." During the furniture selection process, Rebekah will often find a few pieces that inspire her color palette. In the cottage, the color palette developed from the wingback chairs at the dining room table. Rebekah echoed the burlap and white hues of the chairs throughout the home, adding in liberal doses of muted blues and sea greens to round out the palette.

Although given virtually complete creative license, Rebekah was faced with budget constraints while working on the cottage. For the designer, however, working on a tight budget was all about finding the right balance. "If you're on a budget, you can still get the upscale look on a whole without blowing your budget," she elaborates. "You just have to strategically place pops of the pricier items." It is also, according to Rebekah, a matter of familiarizing yourself with your resources. If you are aware of the varying price points of different companies, you are more likely to know a great deal when you see one, and are also more likely to know when something is worth splurging on. She also urges people to consider interior designers as a resource; "People think designers are always expensive," she Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010 • 77

says, "and at times we can be, if that is what you want, but we can also source items that you can't buy anywhere else. Designers can be a great asset for someone on a budget." A true believer in the principle of less-is-more, Rebekah designed each space in the cottage to be a reflection of chic minimalism. "I feel like when you over-decorate, you don't give people room to move in and make it their own, and then it just gets crowded," she muses. "I like more of a soothing and sophisticated—but still clean and classic—look so it doesn't get dated. I don't want someone to look at these pictures in five years and say, What was she thinking?" For now, Rebekah

can rest assured she has pleased at least one client with the timeless look she created in the Cassique cottage. "I remember, after the job was finally done, being in Savannah with my husband when I got a call from my assistant," recollects Rebekah. "She told me the homeowners saw the pictures we emailed them of the finished home and they were so excited they wanted to call and personally thank me!" It is moments like that, according to the resourceful designer, that make all her hard work worthwhile. v

"If you're on a budget, you can still get the upscale look on a whole without blowing your budget," Rebekah says.

a touch of warmth Even given careful consideration, a bathroom can come off as a cold and sterile space. Take a cue from this brandy-hued bathroom and infuse your own space with a bit of warmth. Tile and countertop selections that echo the warm color on the walls enhance the inviting atmosphere. Not ready for a full make-over? A little bright colored paint goes a long way!

From the mirrored cabinet doors to the elaborate wainscoting, this bathroom is packed with details that add interest and depth to the space. a focal point The homeowners of this house knew that to make the most of their narrow bathroom, they needed to maximize the space they had. Builder Aaron Youmans and the rest of the Custom Designs team created a show-stopping, spa-style marble bathroom that combines functional features with modern luxuries.

a clever mix As opposed to plunging full-steam ahead with only one style, this bathroom opts for a transitional design that samples from several styles—a smart way to avoid falling obsolete at the hands of fleeting design trends. The exquisite chandelier and traditional cabinetry say classic, while the mirror-mount faucet and sleek vessel sink appeal to more contemporary tastes.

bright white When in doubt, go white…this perennially preppy shade never falls out of fashion, particularly in the Holy City. Plus, the clean white cabinets, crystal hardware, and crisp white linens in this bathroom effortlessly brighten up the space, making it look clean and inviting. natural appeal Mother Nature is a master of artistry, so echoing the colors and textures of the outdoors inside your bathroom is a foolproof way to add finesse. Avocado-colored walls and textural floor tile give this space a gorgeously organic aura, proving that sometimes less is more—all the bells and whistles aren’t necessary if you start with great design.

room for two Over time, we all accumulate a bit of bathroom baggage. From lotions to floss, everyone needs some space to stash their toiletries and the like. If your vanity lacks adequate cabinet space, you will spend half your time in the bathroom fighting for drawer space with your significant other. Homeshow in Hindsight

Our 2010

January 29-31, 2010 Gaillard Auditorium

M

ost years, the Charleston Home + Design Show starts off with a bang on Friday evening with the ever-popular Kitchens, Baths, + All That Jazz party. This year, however, the party started a little earlier for patrons.... In response to the current recession, we opted to offer more value to home show guests with special deals, discounts, and exhibits. Kicking off the entire weekend was Free Friday —everyone who came to the show during regular show hours on Friday got in, you guessed it, absolutely free. Following a huge turnout and an equally busy Friday night party, the buzz continued throughout the weekend as guests picked up free

review coupon books with vendor discounts and two day passes (for one admission price!), garnered free design advice from ASID interior designers, attended free home-oriented seminars, perused the six Celebrity/Designer Idea Rooms, and even got free book signings from acclaimed authors. Held January 29-31 at the Gaillard Auditorium downtown, this year's show was filled with dynamic exhibits and graced by homeowners full of hope for the promise of the new year. If you happened to miss the exciting event, flip though the following pages to catch up on some of the home show's biggest highlights.

We would be remiss if we didn't thank the 14 fantastic ASID interior designers who solved so many design conundrums and queries for home show patrons; thank you all so much for donating your time and expertise!

Other Special Exhibits In addition to the Free ASID Design Consultations and Celebrity Designer Idea Rooms, several other exhibits and incentives contributed to the action-packed weekend. In an effort to save homeowners money, we offered two day passes for one admission price. We handed out coupon books to every home show visitor to take advantage of considerable discounts to virtually every show vendor. We invited homeowners to sit in on free seminars by respected industry professionals, with topics ranging from kitchen remodels to staying organized (a seminar several staff members attended!). Bonus? Every homeowner who attended the seminars received a free gift! Homeowners who were building or remodeling also enjoyed Speed Dating, where they had the opportunity to meet seven architects, builders, and interior designers in three separate sessions.

Grand Prize Drawing Each year, thousands of homeowners fill out grand prize drawing ballots at the home show and wish for the best. Many have lofty plans set out for the prize money, but no one ever really believes they will be the lucky winner. It may seem too good to be true but, as surreal as it was, it became a truth this year for home show visitor Gloria Adelson of West Ashley. Gloria chose to receive a $5000 tile shopping spree at Melcer Tile from the generous list of options below, and already has plans for a bathroom remodel underway. Congrats Gloria, and good luck with the remodel! • • • • • • • • •

Homeshow in Hindsight Celebrity Designer Rooms Everyone who visited the Charleston Home + Design Show was asked to cast a vote for their favorite Celebrity/Designer Idea Room, this year all created for acclaimed Lowcountry authors by local interior designers. Each room was associated with a charity picked by the corresponding celebrity. In turn, each charity chosen received a $500 donation from Charleston Home + Design in the respective celebrity’s name. After tallying this year's votes, we found the numbers were so close, we recounted twice to be completely certain of the winner. And the 2010 top winner is...

Chef Bob Waggoner

Dorothea Benton Frank

Marjory Wentworth

designed by: Jane Jilich, ASID

Mary Alice Monroe

Chef Bob Waggoner's room, designed by Joyce Cerato of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries! Chef Bob chose Louie's Kids to receive a $500 donation in his name.

To drum up even more excitement for the charitable exhibit, three of the six authors participated in a book signing session on Saturday, January 30 from 1pm-4pm. Ken Burger, award-winning executive sports editor of The Post & Courier and author of Swallow Savannah, and Chef Bob Waggoner, author of The Charleston Grill Cookbook and host of the television show "UCook! with Chef Bob," and Dorothea Benton Frank, NY Times best-selling author of Bulls Island, The Land of Mango Sunsets, The Christmas Pearl, Full of Grace, Pawleys Island, Shem Creek, Isle of Palms, Plantation, and Sullivan's Island were on hand during the special session to personally sign books for home show patrons.

LOWCOUNTRY outdoor living guide

F

This gorgeous swimming pool, built by Aqua Blue Pools, overlooks the Wando River from homeowners Rick & Krissa Jackowski's Dunes West home.

ollowing a tumultuous few years, Lowcountry residents are finally beginning to breathe a bit easier. For the first time in quite some time, hope is drifting in the air with the salty sea breeze, and we are primed and ready to embrace it. After all, in the Holy City, we place high priority on happiness. If there is a silver lining to the state of the economy, it is that it forced us to remember what is really important…family, friends, hospitality. More than ever, Charlestonians feel incredibly blessed to live in a city so full of natural beauty and unparalleled charm.

It makes sense, then, to get out there and enjoy it! Turn the radio up and ride with your windows down. Pack a cooler and take the boat for a spin in the harbor. And, most of all, enjoy time at home, spent living and laughing out loud with those you love. This year, we’ve compiled our annual outdoor living guide chock-full of products meant to maximize your own outdoor living areas. So, go on, peruse. Better yet, grab some sunscreen and a lounge chair and soak up the inspiration—and sun!—in the great outdoors. Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010 • 127

Concrete is a material that gives you the option of thickness, texture, color, and edge design for countertops. Concrete also allows you to take part in the design process.

DID YOU KNOW? The typical urban fence of today is primarily employed as a means of safety and privacy—a way to keep our children and pets from wandering outside of the watchful eyes of parents, and to keep unwelcome visitors out. However, fencing first developed under the feudal system by enterprising farmers who wanted to use their land in more lucrative ways. This meant dispossessing peasants allocated to strips of land on the property in order to eliminate common fields and, essentially, make themselves the most productive—and therefore profitable—landholders.

Pest

Control

Pests such as termites, ants, spiders and roaches (fondly referred to in South Carolina as Palmetto Bugs) can be a nuisance inside AND outside your home. Without consistent treatments they're guaranteed to multiply very quickly, creating much bigger problems. It’s a risk not worth taking. Available at Ledford’s (843) 766-8298 • ledfordspestcontrol.com Almost anything comprised of wood or near wood is fair game for termites, and they have been known to destroy boats, decks, docks, and more. Routine termite treatments and maintenance are key to keeping your outdoor areas intact. U.S. Pest & Environmental Services offers services such as Termidor Liquid Pretreatment, to deter the derelict bugs from doing costly damage. A chemical technology undetectable by termites, Termidor is picked up by the individual insects and carried back into the colony, where it systematically wipes out the infestation. It's a warm summer day and you accidentally disturb a newly built fire ant nest in your backyard. T

he air is heady downtown in the springtime, dense with the sweet scent of azaleas, camellias, and other fair weather flowers. Sprightly bumble bees, thick-laden with pollen, flit around the busy streets, weaving in and out of the tourists before disappearing behind the stately gates of picturesque homes. An integral part of Charleston's charm, the lushly landscaped gardens and yards of the Peninsula remain a mystery to most—only visible in the slim spaces between wrought iron posts. Their allure, however, is palpable. Holy City residents and guests alike can often be found craning their necks around corners to view the vast expanses of green hidden from sight. As luck would have it, the charitable organization responsible for many of these miniEdens provides an outlet for landscape voyeurs when, every spring, The Garden Club of Charleston leads the eager through the wrought iron gates straight into some of Charleston’s most captivating secret gardens.

About The Garden Club of Charleston

O

ne of the oldest and largest garden clubs of America, The Garden Club of Charleston was founded in 1922 and federated in 1932. The Garden Club of Charleston is a non-profit organization dedicated to "directing profits from projects solely for benevolent, charitable, scientific, and educational purposes conducive to the well-being of the community; to promoting the protection and conservation of natural resources and wildlife; to encouraging civic planting and beautification; to furthering horticultural education, conservation and landscape design through gift camp scholarships; and to encouraging the love of all phases of garden club work." For 75 years, The Garden Club of Charleston has offered special tours of private houses and gardens in the historic district, which fund the Club's many benevolent community projects. The Garden Club of Charleston maintains the following gardens that tourists and locals alike enjoy throughout the year:

156 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

Joseph Manigault Garden at 350 Meeting Street. Built in 1803 and seeing many transformations, The Charleston Museum purchased the house in 1933, it was opened to the public in 1949 and The Garden Club of Charleston has maintained the magnificent garden ever since. Heyward-Washington Garden at 87 Church Street has been maintained by The Garden Club of Charleston since 1941. Designed as a Charleston garden during the late 18th century it features a knot garden and plants authentic to the period. The Heyward House was built in 1772. Garden of the Confederate Home at 62 Broad Street whose buildings and courtyard are nearly hidden from passersby is now maintained by The Garden Club of Charleston. The historic site was established in 1867 as a home for mothers, widows, and daughters of Confederate soldiers.

To give you a true perspective on the Club's walking tours, we asked Barbara Heddinger, who handles publicity, to describe the seasonal —but perennially appealing!—walking tours for us

Charleston's Hidden Treasure: The Historic Gateway Walk

T

he Gateway Walk is a true gift to the city. Just a few feet from the hustling city streets, inner courtyards give solace where you can listen to birds and church bells. The Garden Club of Charleston maintains this wonderful garden for the public to enjoy, though few people know about this hidden treasure. Following a trip to Paris in the late 1920s that included an inspiring visit to La Madeline Church and its surrounding gardens, Mrs. Celia Peronnlou McGowan returned home with a desire to create a similar setting in the heart of her native Charleston. Employing her persuasive skills both as President

of The Garden Club of Charleston and as an influential member of the City Council, Mrs. McGowan was successful in bringing her dream to reality with the development of Charleston's Gateway Walk. Designed by prominent landscape architect Loutrel Briggs and dedicated on April 10, 1930 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city, the Gateway Walk combined several historic sites with an interconnecting system of landscaped walkways in Charleston's Historic District. During World War II, it became increasingly difficult to secure funds and resources

to maintain Gateway Walk, and by 1950 the project showed signs of neglect. In January 1953, the Garden Club of Charleston took steps to restore this unique civic project to its former glory. In recognition of its importance to the community, the project was awarded the Kellogg Medal for Civic Achievement in 1954.

The 75th Annual Walking Tour of Private Houses & Gardens

T

he Garden Club of Charleston's 75th Annual Walking tour of Private Houses & Gardens takes place Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 2pm-5pm. A tour of some of historic Charleston's most magnificent homes and gardens, the tour will also feature flower arrangements crafted by members of the Club. Refreshments will also be served in a lovely Charleston garden. This year is very special to our garden club in that it marks our 75th anniversary of house and garden tours. We are the second oldest garden club in the country, and we are very proud that we have been opening our houses and gardens for the public to enjoy, and to benefit our continuing projects. This is the most beautiful time of the year in Charleston, with the gardens at their peak; we hope you will join us!

Tickets are $35, and may be purchased in advance. They will also be available at the Visitor Information Center on the day of tours. For information on the tour and how to order tickets, please visit our website TheGardenClubofCharleston.org or call (843) 530-5164. All proceeds benefit The Garden Club of Charleston's continuing projects—maintaining gardens at the Manigault House, the Heyward-Washington House, the Association for the Blind, the Gateway Walk, the Healing Garden at MUSC, and the gardens at the Historic Confederate Home. rooms as well as the outdoor living spaces at the Idea House, since we're already focusing so much attention on these areas in the rest of Charleston Home + Design magazine.

In this issue we thought it made sense to spotlight the products and services that were purchased for the Idea House bath-

In our first story, we asked Interior Designer April Lipps of AKL Professional Interiors to share her thoughts on the bathroom selections she made for the Idea House. So many products go into a bathroom—tile, lighting, plumbing fixtures, vanities, knobs and pulls, countertops, mirrors, glass, towel rods/hooks, paint colors, and more. All of these prod-

hose who read Charleston Home + Design magazine on a regular basis know all about the Idea House we built and revealed in 2009. Since then, droves of readers have contacted us with inquires and questions, prompting us to continue our coverage of the Idea House. To be honest, we kind of went overboard on the "ideas" that went into the Idea House and so there remain many stories yet to tell.

}

ucts must be carefully chosen so that everything harmonizes. And we remember vividly how making one change in the selections, such as tile, created a domino effect of changes to the other selections. Bathrooms are a huge challenge and we know you'll get some great ideas for your own bathroom project here. We also go in depth as we explore all the outdoor spaces at the Idea House, pointing out exactly who did what and where, making it easy for you to discover exactly which local company to contact for your own project. The privacy wall allows the homeowners their own space but with the opening

at the top, conversations can still be carried on while getting ready. A central ceiling fan overhead moves air on both sides of the wall and distributes natural light throughout. But while the privacy wall is a visual partition separating the dwellers, the two spaces work in harmony. This side of the master bath is

dominated by an enormous tiled shower with multiple shower heads and a frameless heavy glass shower wall which the couple shares. Natural light spills into the bathroom from the bedroom through a transom of glass block in the shower and a separate water closet allows both adults complete privacy as well.

n the other side of the wall, an MTI air jet tub from Mt. Pleasant Winnelson is surrounded on each side by floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. It was decided to paint these cabinets white so that the vanities would be the focal point and to keep the bathroom from being too dark. Matching Plain & Fancy brand vanities from Designer Kitchens & Baths each back up to the privacy wall. Both are stained dark and have feet to make them resemble a piece of furniture. Above the vanities, glass tiles were used to cover the wall, and the mirror was inset into the tile. The glass tiles add some "glitz" to the room and the dark vanities draw your attention to this area. The faucets were wall mounted to keep the marble countertops clean and uncluttered, while also adding a contemporary feel to the bathroom. We wanted the space to be light and airy but be dramatic, which the vanities and glass tiles achieve.

IDEA HOUSE Update: BATHROOMS

April's Selections:

Hall Bathroom

T

he purpose of the Idea House was to be creative and give people ideas and, with glass tile becoming so popular, we decided to cover the entire floor in a new glass tile made specifically to walk on. During the Idea House open house, many people remarked that the tile floor looked like the scales on a mermaid’s tail and the mermaids on the wall contribute to that visualization. To keep the floor as the focal point, simple white subway tile was used on the walls, with one row of glass for an accent strip. The vanity for the bathroom was to have the same coastal feel as the rest of the house so beadboard was used inside the door and drawer frames. A "pop out" on the cabinetry in the center accentuates the drawers and makes the vanity look like a piece of furniture. The addition of decorative feet furthered this look. Glass hardware, which matches the green wall paint, gives the vanities a finishing touch. This bathroom was designed with growing girls in mind, which means make-up and other potential stain-inducing products would impact the countertops. Therefore, we chose granite rather than marble to prevent future spills from showing. The décor selected was to be lasting and usable by both adults and children. Simple accessories were used that would allow the girls to grow up and not have to make any major changes to the room’s décor. The only things that would be changed would be wall color and decorative accents.

Lighting Fixtures: Lighting fixtures from Charleston Lighting & Interiors Mirror: Mirror from Quality Mirror & Glass, Inc. Vanity Tops: Bianco Sardo granite originating from AGM Imports; countertops fabricated and installed by Lowcountry Tile Contractors, Inc. his half bath was added after discovering additional space during construction. It saves those who might be partying on the rooftop deck from having to walk down two flights of stairs to use the hall bathroom. IDEA HOUSE Update: OUTDOORS

Every homeowner should take the time to meet with a landscape designer to create a plan if you're building a new home. If you have an existing home, a landscape designer can create a plan for a backyard makeover that you can implement all at once or a little at a time. Either way, you'll have a plan to tie everything together seamlessly. The investment is relatively small and you'll be happy you made it.

IDEA HOUSE Update: OUTDOORS

Outdoor Living Spaces:

Pool Area & Covered Terrace Swimming Pool: Three waterfalls were integrated into the swimming pool built by Clear Blue Pools as a water feature to provide the calming sounds of trickling water (neutralizing traffic noise from nearby I-26). Clear Blue custom-designed the pool to fit into the limited space available in the backyard of the Idea House. Clear Blue Pools (843) 851-1067 Bluestone Caps: The waterfalls are topped off with 2-inch thick bluestone, a very traditional hardscape material here in the Lowcountry used for walkways, patios, and driveways. Carolina Supplies & Materials (843) 723-6588 Southern Stonescapes Unlimited (843) 532-7856 (installation) Automatic Pool Cover: We worked early on with Clear Blue Pools to specifically design the swimming pool to accommodate an automatic pool cover from Pool Cover Specialists of the Southeast. A key automatically closes the pool cover, keeping children safe and reducing pool cleanings. Pool Cover Specialists of the Southeast (843) 766-0289

Pool Decking: Lowcountry Paver provided all the pavers for the pool deck and underneath the covered terrace while Southern Stonescapes expertly installed the pavers. Lowcountry Paver (843) 784-7104 (materials), Southern Stonescapes Unlimited (843) 532-7856 (installation) Outdoor Kitchen Island: The folks at William Smith Fireplaces installed a stainless steel outdoor kitchen island/ grill which came with a built-in look without the built-in price tag. The entire kitchen/grill came as a kit which included granite countertops, a warming drawer, a stone veneer, and more. Some units even have refrigeration. William Smith Fireplaces & Home Accents (843) 766-0347 Outdoor Teak Furniture: The Teak Hut provided these well-built chaise lounge chairs to relax upon around the swimming pool. A teak buffet has plenty of space on top for serving dishes when entertaining, and space below for storage later on. The Teak Hut (843) 856-2095 Accesories: Amy Floyd of Island Daze Designs staged all of the outdoor living spaces, providing all the accessories available at her shop in Southern Accent Designer Showcase in Mt. Pleasant. Island Daze Designs (843) 532-1041 Outdoor Music: Audio Warehouse installed outdoor speakers to listen to music, whether swimming or taking a break in the shade. Audio Warehouse (843) 571-0535

IDEA HOUSE Update: OUTDOORS

Outdoor Living Spaces:

Porte-Cochere & Driveway Outdoor Fireplace: A stainless steel wood burning fireplace from William Smith Fireplaces will last many years—even in the salty air—and helps transform a driveway-like space into a true living room area. William Smith Fireplaces & Home Accents (843) 766-0347 Mantel: A salvaged heart pine girder beam originating from the historic Factors Walk Warehouse in Downtown Charleston takes on a new life as a mantel (note the original notches underneath). Joseph Wickes Salvage (843) 514-9595 Brick Wall: Brick from Cemex was used on the fireplace wall and while the brick is new, it has the appearance of being reclaimed. Cemex (843) 744-2992 (materials), Southern Stonescapes Unlimited (843) 532-7856 (installation) Pavers: Terra cotta hued pavers from Lowcountry Paver were expertly installed by Accu-Brick Paving Systems and complement the brick wall. Lowcountry Paver (843) 784-7104 (Materials), Accu-Brick Paving Systems (843) 821-0121 (installation) Stucco: Oyster shell tabby was used in the stucco on the foundation walls of the Idea House. Carolina Supplies & Materials (843) 723-6588

Outdoor Wicker Furniture: It pays to visit Sea Island Habitat for Humanity ReStore often for arrivals of nearly new furnishings. These wicker pieces were barely used and a great bargain. Sea Island Habitat for Humanity ReStore (843) 559-4009 Outdoor Music: Audio Warehouse installed additional outdoor speakers in the ceiling for those congregated around the outdoor fireplace. Audio Warehouse (843) 571-0535

Wrought Iron Gate: At the entrance to the porte cochere, a barrel-shaped wrought iron gate was custom made by Lowcountry Iron & Woodworks. The gate provides security while allowing natural cooling breezes to pass through unhindered. Lowcountry Iron & Woodworks (803) 515-3023 Driveway: Three-piece Old World Cobble tumbled pavers from Lowcountry Paver were expertly installed by Accu-Brick Paving Systems along with an adjacent retention wall. While neighboring concrete driveways will crack over time, the pavers can be easily re-set when the ground underneath shifts. Lowcountry Paver (843) 784-7104 (materials), Accu-Brick Paving Systems (843) 821-0121 (installation)

IDEA HOUSE Update: OUTDOORS

Outdoor Living Spaces:

Rooftop Deck Steel Cabling Handrail System: To take full advantage of the 360-degree views of the Ashley River, The Citadel, and top of the Ravenel Bridge, a steel cabling handrail system was used, which not only provides safety but also enhances the sightlines. Charleston's Rigging & Marine Hardware (843) 723-5859 Outdoor Teak Furniture: In order to find outdoor furniture that would withstand all the elements plus be heavy enough not to blow off the roof, we turned to Dave Vaupel and the Teak Hut. The Teak Hut (843) 856-2095 Wrought Iron Spiral Staircase: The rooftop observation deck can be accessed by a wrought iron staircase that is compact enough in size to be installed in a small space yet strong enough to endure the salt air. Lowcountry Iron & Woodworks (803) 515-3023 Outdoor Music: Audio Warehouse installed outdoor speakers with a remote that allows the user to change the music without leaving the rooftop deck. Audio Warehouse (843) 571-0535

172 • Charleston Home + Design • Spring 2010

Other Notable Outdoor Living Elements 1) Windows & Doors: We chose Jeld Wen brand windows, which are available at the Muhler Company, in order to take advantage of all the great views of the outdoor living spaces. The Muhler Company (843) 572-9727 2) Hardscapes: The Idea House is a veritable showcase for assorted types of hardscape materials. Four different styles of pavers were used for the driveway, porte cochere, covered terrace, and pool deck. Oyster shell tabby was used to create a concrete walkway in the front of the Idea House and in the stucco on the foundation walls. Bluestone was used to cap off the top of a retention wall and the swimming pool waterfalls. Brick was used on a single wall in the porte cochere as a design element. 3) Mosquito Misting System: In order to enjoy all the outdoor living space on the ground floor, a series of misting nozzles and tubing were installed around the perimeter of the back yard. The nozzles are strategically placed where mosquitoes tend to congregate, and yet are inconspicuous to the eye. Palmetto Mosquito Control (843) 766-9701 4) Retractable Screens: Large screen panels that rise up and lower with a remote control were installed by Modern Screen Solutions on the small porch off the master bedroom. When raised, the screens provide unobstructed views of the marsh and Ashley River. Modern Screen Solutions (843) 278-4963
