south coastal portland Portland Discovery Land & Sea Tours has been offering tours of Portland for over 12 years. As a locally owned and operated company, they take pride in showing visitors all that Maine’s largest city has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a city tour, harbor cruise or both, Portland Discovery has it covered! The most popular tour Portland Discovery offers is the Land & Sea Tour. This combo tour is a great way to maximize your day in Portland. For just $33, you’ll get a 90-minute Trolley Tour and a 90-minute Lighthouse Lovers Cruise on Casco Bay. The 2009 season begins May 9th and will continue right through the end of October. In July & August trolley tours run at 9:30, 11:15, 1:00, 2:45 and 4:30. Harbor cruises are offered at 11:30, 1:30, 3:30 and 6:30. Tours will operate daily through October 25th, however the schedule does change a bit after Labor Day. Though not required, reservations are strongly recommended in-season. For those looking for a true “Maine adventure” a trip to Eagle Island may be the answer. This adventure includes a narrated cruise through beautiful Casco Bay, plus an opportunity to explore Eagle Island. While en route to the island, you’ll cruise through scenic back channels and quiet coves, past island cottages and quaint fishing villages. On the island you will have an opportunity to tour the former summer estate of famed arctic explorer, Admiral Robert E. Peary, the 1st man to reach the North Pole.

In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to it’s destiny.

Poland Mining Camps Foremost among Maine’s many collectible minerals and gemstones are elbaite tourmaline, the heliodor and aquamarine varieties of beryl several types of garnet, the amethyst and smoky varieties of quartz, lepidolite, and purple fluorapatite. All these minerals can be collected in the numerous quarries that are scattered throughout one of the largest concentrations of granite pegmatites in the United States. Although Maine’s pegmatites attract hundreds of rockhounds each year, collecting minerals is not always an easy matter. With few exceptions, the pegmatites are privately owned and posted against trespassing. And while these quarries contain an abundance of specimens, recognizing the subtle forms and colors that separate them from the huge volumes of dump rock can be difficult. Finally, many quarries have been inactive for decades, meaning that no recent drilling and blasting has been done to expose new material. Rockhounds planning to collect in Maine’s pegmatites—especially out-of-state visitors with no local ties—need all the help they can get. They can get it from Mary Groves and her staff at Poland Mining Camps. A complete guiding service for pegmatite-mineral collectors, Poland Mining Camps provides lodging, meals, access to 15 privately-owned quarries, experienced guides, the right to keep all specimens that are found, and the opportunity to meet prominent local collectors and geologists. Bridgton is also a service center for the western part of Maine. It’s amazing to see the growth that has sprung up in the last decade, including a new elementary school, state-ofthe-art hospital, supermarket, national coﬀee chain, and the rebuilding of the 4-screen Magic Lantern movie theatre and pub, plus the nearly-completed 45-acre in-town park along Stevens Brook. At the same time, Bridgton has kept its “back to the past” feel, without strict zoning laws and ordinances. western lakes & mountains fryeburg Fryeburg is nestled in the valley of the Saco River about an hour west of Portland and next door to the famous Mount Washington Valley with its many shopping outlets. There are lots of opportunities to buy farm products right at the source or rent a canoe for a leisure paddle on the river or on one of the numerous nearby lakes and ponds. Fair time usually coincides with foliage season, which makes a great time for a scenic mountain drive or a short climb up Jockey Cap, the famous local boulder. Fryeburg is also home to the famous private Fryeburg Academy that serves boarding students from around the world as well as the public high school for seven nearby towns in Maine and one in nearby New Hampshire. Daniel Webster was an early headmaster at the Academy. Fryeburg was the first town settled in what is now Oxford County and came about as a result of a grant of land to one Colonel Joseph Frye in 1763. In 1725, there was a famous battle between Captain Lovewell’s small army of men and local Indians. A monument commemorating that battle can still be viewed at the northwest end of the local lake names Lovewell. The Fryeburg Fair’s first run was in 1851 as an annual exhibition of the West Oxford Agricultural Society. The Society was authorized by an act of the Maine legislature. It includes the towns of Baldwin, Bridgton, Brownfield, Cornish, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Hiram, Lovell, Otisfield, Standish, Stoneham, Stow and Sweden (in Maine), as well as the towns of Bartlett, Chatham, Conway, Eaton, Freedom and Jackson (in N.H.).

recipes Barbara’s Artichoke Dip • 1 can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1 cup parmesan cheese • 1/3 cup chopped black olives • pepper to taste Mix all ingredients together. Transfer mixture to oven-safe dish. Bake in preheated 375° oven until golden and bubbly, about 25-30 minutes. Serve with Triscuits or crostini bread. Mango Curry Dip • 8 oz cream cheese • 1/2 tsp curry • 1/2 cup mango chutney • 1/3 cup toasted coconut Mix all ingredients together. Serve with fruit or crackers.

Place in a layer in ﬂat, greased baking pan. Cover with strips of bacon and bake at 450° until bacon is crisp. Enjoy! Cheesecake Cream Dip • 7 oz. jar marshmallow cream • 8 oz. package softened cream cheese Blend these two ingredients together. Add 1T orange juice and 1t orange rind. Use as a dip for strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or for fresh fruit fondue. Can use in place of whipped cream for strawberry shortcake.

central & midcoast damariscotta There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. It’s attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The Chapman-Hall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during the countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. Some of the shell heaps run as deep as 30 feet. The river continued to play a vital role over the years. It has supported many industries, including fisheries, lumbering, brickyards and a large number of shipyards. In the mid-1800’s, the shipyards in Damariscotta, Newcastle and Nobleboro are said to have built more clipper ships than any other locale in Maine. At the end of the 19th century, summer communities were established at Christmas Cove, Heron Island and Boothbay. These became the foundation for the areas thriving hospitality industry. Eight towns and villages share the watershed and are linked by a common history. The Damariscotta River was formed more than 10,000 years ago. Twice a day since then, millions of gallons of seawater have surged through the

central & midcoast owl’s head Owl’s Head is the coastal suburb of the city of Rockland. It has long been a summer resort village with many vacation cottages and lovely year-round homes. The coastal scenery is superb and was noted by explorer Samuel de Champlain when he landed here in 1605. The community is convenient to many of the best mid-coast attractions and has two major ones of it’s own: Owl’s Head Transportation Museum and Owl’s Head Light. On Vinalhaven, North Haven or Islesboro, you’ll ﬁnd shops, restaurants, museums and lots of landscape to see and photograph.

Throughout the summer, the scenic splendor of a variety of pleasure craft and lobster boats enhances the activity of the city’s harbor. Its harbor is well protected by a breakwater, which is just under 1 mile long. This is a nice walk, on a good day. Take a picnic lunch and a fishing pole and catch a fish or two on the coming tide. State-run ferries make regular trips to two islands in Penobscot Bay (Vinalhaven and North Haven). Rockland’s waterfront park hosts the Maine Lobster Festival (60th year). Moving up from the harbor is a beautiful Main Street business area and several modern shopping malls. The Farnsworth Library and Art Museum features 18th, 19th, and 20th century American canvasses and a substantial collection of Andrew Wyeth’s work. Many fine waterfront restaurants offer fresh serving’s of the daily local catch. Shorefront accommodations, with close-up views of the harbor, are available at competitive rates.

From Main Street to shorefront shopping centers, Rockland offers a strong appeal to visitors. Intermixed is a wealth of cultural activities, art galleries, nationally famous museums and interesting sites. Penobscot Bay’s largest islands are a short ferry ride away. Take your car, your bike, or just your feet and a picnic lunch. On Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro, you’ll find shops, restaurants, museums, and lots of landscape to see and photograph. As the center of mid-coast Maine and the gateway to the Penobscot, Rockland harbor services are among the very best along the entire coast. Drafts at mean low water are from 10’ to 50’. The Port of Rockland is active with fishing, cargo and island ferry traffic. The 18’ main channel allows room for heavy traffic and short turn around time. There is a permanent Coast Guard base located on the harbor.

Soften cream cheese in double boiler over hot water. Add onion, mustard and salad dressing and blend well. Stir in crabmeat and sherry. Lobster Omelette • 2 eggs, slightly beaten • 1/3 cup cooked lobster meat

Saute lobster meat in butter just slightly. Pour beaten eggs on top of lobster and cook in a pan until eggs are “set,” then fold over. Homemade Blueberry Jam • 2 1/2 cups fresh or dry-pack frozen blueberries • 3 cups sugar • 1/3 cup orange juice • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1/2 bottle (3 oz.) fruit pectin Wash blueberries. Measure 2 1/2 cups into an enamel or stainless steel pan. Crush blueberries in pan. Add sugar and fruit juices. Mix well. Bring to a full rolling boil and boil hard for one minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in pectin. Seal in hot sterilized jars. Refrigerate. Storage: 2 months. Yield: 3 cups or 4 (6 oz.) jars. Josephine’s Shrimp Dip • 2 small jars of shrimp in cocktail sauce • 8 oz. cream cheese Chop shrimp into small pieces. Add roughly 3/4 of left over cocktail sauce to softened cream cheese and mix. Mix the chopped shrimp into the cream cheese mixture. Chill prior to serving. Serve with Bugles or crackers.

acadia & downeast This region includes the spectacular Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in America. Washington County where the sun ﬁrst rises on continental United States and Campobello Island, N.B. located across the International Bridge from Lubec, Maine made famous for being the summer home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and St. Stephen, N.B. across the Ste. Croix River from its sister U.S. city Calais, Maine. Acadia National Park includes more than 40,000 acres, mostly on Mount Desert Island. The remainder of the park is located at Schoodic Point near Winter Harbor on the mainland and several islands, including the Isle au Haut. The park oﬀers great trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Fishing and kayaking are a few other activities one can enjoy in this natural wonderland. For many, Washington County is thought of as Continental America’s last frontier. Here you can escape by yourself and hike a salt- sprayed beach at West Quoddy Head State Park or forest trail in Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge or at hundreds of other pristine areas throughout the Sunrise County and never meet another soul. Washington County is large by New England standards. From Steuben in the southwest to Danforth in the northeast the land area is larger than the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. Making summer treats and holiday traditions special For more than a half a century the Hanscom’s have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike flock to the Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, facility to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. The Wharf The last full-time, working sardine factory that had been housed in an historic 100-year-old building with a large wharf on Johnson Bay in Lubec, Maine was not on the Traﬀord’s list of purchases. They had recently sold their Florida business and wanted a new life adventure as they planned for their early retirement and after a carefree trip to downeast Maine, decided that Lubec was the spot they would retire and make their new life. They saw great potential in the vacant sardine factory and after much thought and counsel purchased the facility. Their goal was to return the facility with its wharf to a working waterfront business. Summer 2009 will launch the fruition of this goal. An oceanfront lifestyle and lodging at The Wharf ’s beautifully furnished apartments and suites are now available. Eastport’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum Raye’s Mustard Mill is a working museum located on Washington Street in Eastport (America’s eastern-most city), approximately eight miles down Route 190 from its intersection with Route 1 in Perry. The quaint and authentic mill is North America’s only working traditional stone ground mustard mill. At the turn of the 20th century, J. Wesley Raye started the mill to produce mustard for Maine’s burgeoning sardine industry. In the early 1900s, the small city of Eastport had more than 20 sardine canneries. Later in the century, when the sardine industry declined, Raye’s Mustard Mill became known for its award-winning gourmet and specialty mustards. This downeast institution has remained in the Raye family for over a century. Currently owned by Kevin and Karen Raye, this family run business remains committed to continuing the traditions of previous generations while focusing on expanding its national presence in the marketplace. The Rayes and their staﬀ welcome tours of the mill, which also features The Pantry Store, a full-service gift shop featuring Maine crafted foods and gifts, as well as take-out.

The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation, led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, and tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility. True to its family heritage, the fifth generation of the Wadsworth family gathered up what remained of the business after the storm and moved to its present location at 42 Water Street in the center of Eastport’s downtown Historic Center.

campobello island, n.b. Park celebrates 45th Anniversary On January 22, 1964, the Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964, the First Ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Back by popular demand are complimentary outside walking tours of the estate and on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology (staﬀ and weather permitting). The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ADT. The park’s visitor center will remain open through October 31 to accommodate fall visitors. The visitors center oﬀers interpretive displays, a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items.

The Queen City of Maine As early as the 1500s, when David Ingram sailed up the Penobscot River explorers believed the region was extraordinary. Some thought that the area was possibly the lost City of Gold—Norumbega. Samuel de Champlain attempted to ﬁnd the gold but settled for a lucrative fur trade with the Indians. The city’s name dates to February 25, 1791 when the General Court of Massachusetts ( Maine was then a part of Massachusetts) approved “Bangor” for incorporation. Lumber was king in Bangor during the city’s early history. River drivers brought logs harvested in Maine’s woods down the Penobscot River to the many mills that banked Bangor’s waterfront. By the late 1800s, Bangor was the busiest seaport on the East Coast shipping ﬁnished lumber to Europe and other parts of the United States. Bangor has been home to many national luminaries including President Abraham Lincoln’s, vice president Hannibal Hamlin, as well as such contemporaries as author Stephen King and Pulitzer Prize-wining playwright Owen Davis. Along with its many cultural attractions, Bangor has great accommodations and dining and is the perfect vacation destination as it is a great starting point for day trips to Bar Harbor and Way Down East as well as to the Katahdin area and Moosehead Lake.
