vermont vows, we have a thing for diy projects. re-purpose, restyle and reuse is here a motto we encourage—and a credo we ourselves wear proudly. the slow pace and organic purity of wintertime offer the perfect opportunity to take on fun diy projects and paint unique vintage treasures in a new light. dotted throughout “color palette” pages [135 - 178] you’ll find homespun diy creations you can use to put your own spin on your celebration and plan your wedding from the heart. ideas and inspiration abound in “style file” pages [183 - 216] where we’ve collected some of the best vermont weddings from seasons past. as the temperature drops this season, the night air becomes rich with the glitter of falling snow, and snowmen dot the yards of neighbors, we invite fall and winter couples to embrace a sense of vintage glamour that has withstood the test of time, romantic, all encompassing and grand—much like true love.

as the weather turns, fur stoles and silk scarves re-emerge from closets and dresser drawers, evoking the accessories worn by the silver screen sirens of yesteryear. ruffles and lace adorn jackets and sweaters—impractical, pretty, and utterly sweet. wool coats and suede gloves prove that classic is forever. the brilliant colors of autumn set the tone for monochromatic shades, embellished with sumptuous splashes of color, and winter’s blanket of white acts as a veritable blank canvas for playful, animated hues. “cold spell ,” page [72] our special gown and design feature, tells a similar story, of chilly winter winds, warmed up with hints of color and old hollywood glamour brought to the forests of vermont. long winters are an invitation to play with the accessories of the season—scarves, hats, and mittens can be adorned with lace, ruffles, tulle, or whatever you fancy. flourishing imaginations bring about tables adorned with wool scarves page [75] or hand-knit hats embellished with crocheted flowers page [99].

there is a certain element of romance & glamour to vermont’s fall & winter seasons, something that i believe to be less evident during the year’s warmer months. the lively days of spring & summer—full of garden parties, picnics & strolls along the beach—fade away, replaced by a more quiet allure. we watch the swirling leaves of autumn & wait for the first magical snowfall.

>> In a world of DJs & iPod wedding playlists, Hans Jenny still knows that bands will never go out of style. Advice: when planning a wedding, couples should listen to the advice of recommended, qualified experts & then go with their guts. everyone likes something a bit different, but quality, experience & overall

impression are critical attributes.

[orchard cove]

BEST BANDS / OWNER HANS JENNY: Hans Jenny knew he was destined for the music industry from a young age. A musician from the age of nine, Hans began as a cello player before transitioning to the guitar as a teen. It wasn’t long before he laid the first groundwork for Best Bands (then Roadshow Entertainment) in the 1970s, booking bands for nightclubs and smaller concert venues. When the nightclubs started to decline in the 1980s, Best Bands truly found its niche, serving couples seeking hip, fun, and energetic bands for weddings and special events.

It isn’t a surprise that Best Bands has flourished in recent decades. As Hans says, “A great band is truly one of the most critical elements of a wedding — music brings people together and creates an awesome wedding celebration.” As the band responsible for the largest block of time at a wedding, the bride and groom shouldn’t overlook its importance. Successfully booking musical talent for the last 35 years, Hans was definitely correct in his childhood prediction: he was destined to be involved in the music industry, indeed.

>> unsure which wedding customs to uphold? we turned to “wediquette” expert anna post for the “something old & something new” of wedding day traditions. for more , visit anna @ emilypost.com number one

SOMETHING OLD/SOMETHING NEW:

THROWING RICE:

Traditionally, “something old” represents the bride’s family history; “something new” shows optimism for her new life; “something borrowed” represents good karma from a happily married family member; and “something blue” recalls the pre-Victorian fashion for blue as the preferred dress color, symbolizing purity. As for the sixpence, which symbolizes prosperity and good fortune, it was decimalized in 1970. Replicas can be found for sale on the internet, but given inflation you might consider a good old American quarter instead.

For years, showering the couple with rice was a symbol of good luck, but it turns out that rice is harmful to birds. A switch to birdseed had groundskeepers up in arms dealing with unwanted weeds in flower beds, and rose petals quickly become slippery and are hard to clean up. Today, clever brides arrange for streamers, flags, or bubbles and wands as cheering alternatives that don’t harm or create a mess.

number TWO YOUR DAUGHTER'S HAND:

“something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a silver sixpence in her shoe…” custom says

a bride should have these items on her person on her wedding day. then there are all those tossing traditions—rice, the garter & the bouquet...

* anna

post

gives modern-day brides the scoop on old traditions.

This pre-marriage consultation with your future in-laws was the de rigueur first step of the marriage process in the days when the focus of a marriage had more to do with property than love. While today’s woman makes her own decisions about marriage, it is still a courtesy for the prospective groom to talk to both of her parents about his intent to marry.

number THREe THE FIRST LOOK:

Christian custom decreed that a groom not see his bride until she walked down the aisle. In Jewish tradition, a groom places his bride’s veil over her face before the ceremony—a reference to the story of Jacob, who mistakenly married the veiled Leah instead of her sister Rachel. Today, many couples arrange a photo-op before the ceremony to capture that “first look” moment when the groom sees his beautiful bride for the first time.

number five GARTER TOSS:

This tradition harkens back to the day when wedding guests would tear off pieces of a bride’s clothing as a souvenir. Though it’s been reduced to an ornamental garter in these modern times, the tradition of a groom removing his bride’s garter and tossing it to the singleton males is losing its appeal. If it’s on your wedding program, keep it in good taste.

number six BOUQUET TOSS:

The girl who catches the bouquet is destined to marry next, which can have more women running away than hoping to catch it. Still, this remains a “must do” for most brides. Nowadays, instead of tossing the whole bouquet, a mini or breakaway “tossing bouquet” is a clever substitute. Alternatively, leaving the whole “next to be married” scenario behind, the bride may present her bouquet to her mother, sister, or maid of honor.

whatever traditions you include—be sure each one means something to you & you’re not just fulfilling them for tradition’s sake.

Alicia grew up in Manchester & still had many friends & family there. it seemed like a natural choice for their destination wedding. the proposal. Several years later, the couple had plans to attend a jazz concert. It was a particularly gorgeous San Francisco day, and they took a cable car up the steep hill of California Street. Alicia thought they had arrived early to pick up tickets, but when they discovered the box office was closed, Tony suggested a walk around the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral, where the concert was taking place. They began to navigate the labyrinth, but it wasn’t long before Alicia glanced at Tony and found him on one knee. As Tony proposed, Alicia had no idea he had arranged for a friend to hide nearby, in order to capture the moment on film. the ceremony. Alicia and Tony were married outside, under an apple tree that inspired part of their decor—each guest’s place setting was marked with an apple picked from a nearby orchard Alicia had frequented as a child. Both the bride and groom recall as a favorite part of their day the moment when a streak of bright sunshine broke through the clouds as they said their vows. In true California fashion, the couple performed a wine ceremony at the wedding, using wine from a friend’s vineyard. To symbolize the blending of their families, the couple’s parents combined wine from two separate portions into a single glass.

before the ring. Alicia Williams and Tony Mindel like to say that they met on a “half blind date.” Both were at a concert at a small club in San Francisco when Alicia caught Tony’s eye. They had mutual friends at the event and Tony asked if they could introduce him, but Alicia left before they had the chance. Tony was determined to meet her—and managed to track down her email address through a friend. Soon after, he connected with her via email, and it wasn’t long before Alicia and Tony were officially a couple. featured wedding professionals

the reception. The reception was heartfelt, simple, and intimate. Tony brought the house down by singing Woody Guthrie’s “Someday, Some Morning, Sometime” to his new bride while a close friend accompanied him on the piano. The couple also enlisted the services of a Grateful Dead cover band—a choice Alicia’s parents were unsure of, until they found themselves on the dance floor for most of the evening. For much of Tony’s family, the celebration was extra special, since they were discovering Vermont for the first time. “Vermont, River Road Farm in particular, is the most magical place to be on a beautiful autumn weekend,” says Alicia.

Chayah + Mike

The couple’s wedding destination was an easy choice. Mike had attended uvm & was a huge fan of nearby restaurant American Flatbread. Chayah had also spent a lot of time in Vermont & knew nothing could compare to the region’s natural beauty. waitsfield,vt 10.02.2010 dreamlove photography

before the ring.

Neither Chayah Lichtig nor Mike Crowley was looking for love when the two first met, but that’s exactly what they got—unwavering, unbelievable, true love. Mike had just moved from North Carolina to Boston, where Chayah was in graduate school. However, Chayah wasn’t overly fond of the city and was looking forward to a move to California the following year. Until then, she found herself wanting to pass some time during summer break and so joined match.com. Mike, who wanted to get out more, had done the same. Soon, they connected on the site and it wasn’t long before their first date. One date was all the couple needed to know they had found something special. “When Mike crashed his bike on the way home from our second date—he claims he was ‘a little distracted’ and not really paying attention to where he was going—and limped back to my house for Band-Aids and ice, we knew it was forever,” says Chayah.

the proposal. After just four and a half months, the pair had talked numerous times about getting married, and after six months, they found themselves engaged. When Mike asked her to join him on a hike, she was pretty sure she knew what was going to happen—and excitedly told all her friends. “That day, we went to brunch with friends. We were brainstorming where to go on this hike, and it was amusing to hear everyone’s suggestions, knowing they were all envisioning our engagement,” she says. Sure enough, when the couple reached the summit, Mike asked Chayah to be his wife.

the couple incorporated many personal elements, beginning with writing their own vows. “We really appreciated the chance to make our wedding be about our marriage and what matters to us, rather than it being the formality that needs to occur between our engagement and the party,” says Chayah. The overall decor reflected their vision of something earthy, natural, and in touch with their surroundings. Their floral design, mostly derived locally, was rich in deep red, gold, ivory, sage green, and hints of turquoise. The colors had originally been provoked by the fall foliage, which was all the inspiration Chayah and Mike really needed. They also went on many hunts for vintage plates, teacups, and saucers for the reception.

katherine + matt

Having spent many summers in Vermont with her family at Hedges Lake, Katherine knew the Equinox Resort was the perfect place for their wedding. “Every summer we would drive past the Equinox—a wedding was often taking place & I would always ask my father to stop so I could watch,” says Katherine. the proposal. Two years later, Katherine and Matt moved to Hong Kong together and realized they were both ready for the next step. One evening, Katherine arrived home to find Matt busy in the kitchen, preparing a lamb dinner. “Matt and I often have nice dinners at home, so I thought nothing of it,” she says. Finally, Matt headed into the kitchen to take the lamb out of the oven. “He came around the corner and asked me to grab the tray. I turned quickly to help him, and there he was on one knee, asking me to marry him,” says Katherine. Needless to say, the meal was instantly forgotten. a wedding weekend. The couple planned the entire wedding from

their home in Hong Kong—with some help, of course. Both were clear on their overall vision for the day, imagining something mature, sophisticated, and traditional. Once they had the right wedding professionals in place, the rest was easy. While the decor at Friday’s “barn party” was vibrant with bright purples, rustic farm tables, and shabby chic china, Saturday’s reception was elegant and understated, employing gray, slate, blue, and cream tones, with some metallic accents. Each table was set with formal gold china; striped linens added a splash of refinement. For the evening celebration, Katherine and Matt arranged for the entire room to be aglow with rosy candlelight. “It was important to us that the reception felt more like a fantastic dinner party than a wedding reception,” says the bride. BEFORE THE RING. During May of 2005, Katherine was with her brother, Neil, at P.J. Clarke's on New York City’s Upper East Side. She and Matt caught each other’s eye, and when Neil stepped out to make a call, Matt didn't hesitate to sidle up to Katherine to introduce himself. It was clear right away that they had chemistry—so much so that Matt asked Katherine if he could take her to dinner that very evening. “I explained I would need to take a rain check because I was spending time with my brother. However, Matt wasn’t taking no for an answer,” says Katherine. That evening, Matt took both Katherine and Neil out for a casual dinner. The following week, Matt and Katherine met for a “proper” first date, and the rest is history.

special touches. Personal details were important to the couple, who made sure to use the two sets of toasting glasses, passed down through Matt’s family for generations. Katherine also adorned her bouquet with her greatgrandmother’s rosary. Each of the guests was presented with a personalized gift—which included Vermont maple syrup.

Looking back, Courtney Zellmer and R.J. Donnelly can’t help but laugh about the circumstances behind their original meeting. Courtney, a New York City-based fashion designer, co-owned a women’s dress company with her cousin, Kathlin Argiro. One winter day, a friend, Erin, who works in PR, asked Courtney if she would act as stylist for Jen Schefft of The Bachelorette. Jen was getting ready to attend the official launch party of her book Better Single than Sorry. Originally, Courtney turned down the opportunity, but after some persuasion on Erin’s part, she agreed to help. Courtney came to the event, planning to make a quick appearance before dashing off to dinner. As fate would have it, R.J. was one of the five men present at the party—not surprisingly, the celebration of a book about being a single girl wasn’t a big draw for single guys. R.J. just so happened to be Erin’s tall, dark, and handsome cousin, and once Courtney was introduced, the two immediately hit it off. N O. 117

The couple had discussed tying the knot, however they had agreed to wait until after R.J.’s brother upcoming nuptials. “I agreed—though I couldn’t help but pop into antique ring shops with my mom in the meantime,” says Courtney. Little did she know that R.J. was popping into ring shops on his own. After he discovered the perfect 1920s Art Deco ring, he knew there was no way he could wait. R.J. took Courtney to New Jersey restaurant, Natirar, where he suggested they walk from the restaurant, located in the carriage house, to the nearby mansion as they waited for their table; it was there that he got down on one knee and asked Courtney to be his wife. “Of course my answer was ‘Yes’,” Courtney says.

Incorporating a color palette of gold, wheat, burlap, and metallic tones, she enlisted family and friends to help with almost everything involved—beginning with her couture wedding gown, which was handmade, from sketch to finish, by Courtney and her cousin Kathlin. Though neither Sylvia nor Eric is originally from Vermont, both are familiar with its unique beauty & knew there was no better place for their wedding. the proposal. On Father’s Day 2011, Sylvia and Eric hosted a barbeque

for some friends. Sylvia thought it was a little strange that Eric was wearing a jacket despite the warm temperature but didn’t think too much of it. Towards the middle of the barbeque, Eric made a toast to fathers, in honor of the occasion. As he spoke, Sylvia casually turned to tend the grill, only to turn back around and see Eric on one knee. “He said he hoped to be a father one day and that this would make it one step closer,” says Sylvia, who laughs as she recalls how her hands were full of two slices of cheese and a spatula. “After several minutes of me screaming and crying with joy, I said 'yes'.” Eric opened his jacket to reveal a shirt with "Yes, Yes!" written on it. the design. To keep the day modern, bright, and cheerful, Sylvia embraced a color palette of vibrant green, yellow, and orange. “I wanted to use my favorite colors that also captured the feeling of summer,” she says. As a nod to Eric’s Jewish heritage, the couple was married under a chuppah consisting of a total of four branches: two from each side of the family. They also incorporated Sylvia’s Korean heritage by taking part in a Korean bowing ceremony, in which each donned traditional Korean attire.

before the ring. When a mutual friend of Sylvia Limm and Eric

Brown expressed interest in setting them up, both declined. Neither was going to be in Boston much longer: Eric was about to move to Los Angeles, and Sylvia was headed to New York. However, the pair couldn’t halt fate – soon after, they met for the first time despite their resistance and knew right away they were meant for each other. Two weeks later, they were living on opposite coasts. However, they couldn’t stay away for long. After nine months living apart, Sylvia joined Eric in California.

a wedding weekend. Since the majority of the guests traveled a considerable distance to attend the celebration, many guests were seeing Vermont for the first time. The bride and groom definitely liked the fact that their wedding was a weekend-long event. “We wanted our wedding on a long weekend so that everyone could enjoy our wedding and use it as an excuse to have a great getaway,” says Sylvia. Since they had the entire Stowehof Inn to themselves, wedding guests had a chance to relax, celebrate, and enjoy the Green Mountain State.

Mandy + Andrew

Mandy always intended to be married in her hometown in Florida; however, as the couple began looking at venues, they couldn’t seem to find one that suited the atmosphere they were looking for. Then, they stumbled upon The Barn at Lang Farm.

before the ring.

The last place Mandy Buigas expected to meet her future husband was on a blind date arranged by her mother, but true love works in funny ways. For weeks, Mandy’s mom and a family friend had tempted Mandy with a mystery man named Andrew Bokan, who they insisted would be just perfect for her. Every time they mentioned him, Mandy responded with a definite—and vehement—“No.” Eventually, Mandy decided to take matters into her own hands and onto Facebook, friending Andrew online. “I accepted Mandy’s friend request on a Wednesday, and on Saturday we were eating sushi and having drinks at an Irish pub,” remembers Andrew. “We never looked back.” Putting aside their initial reluctance to meet, the new couple rapidly made up for lost time, spending nearly every weekend together and emailing or talking on the phone almost every day throughout their busy weeks. “I think we both knew pretty quickly that this was it,” says Mandy.

the proposal. As summer of 2010 began, Andrew arranged a relaxing and romantic getaway to Nantucket—a location that holds a special place in the pair’s hearts, as it was the very first spot they vacationed together. Their first day on the island was dreary and foggy, which did not fit well with Andrew’s plan of a dazzling beach proposal. Unable to wait, Andrew relinquished his grand attempts, pulling Mandy out onto the beach, where, in the midst of the fog, he got down on one knee in the sand to ask her to be his wife.
