Publishers Note: Aaahhh! Finally! Cooler weather is on the way. I don’t know about you, but I welcome the cooler fall temperatures after one of the longest hottest summers I’ve ever endured. And I’m a little sad to say “Hotlanta” is too hot for this shade loving country girl. That’s right... we’re packing up, moving an hour north to the cooler cozy corners of White County. I know... we just got going with the “City & Country” theme, well, we have had good responses and will keep including shops and events in these areas and especially regarding our distribution. Notably North Georgia does have both developed “Cities” and plenty of “Country” to explore. If you ask me straight, I’ll tell you: North Georgia has the best of both worlds! Hope you get to enjoy the fall colors! Later. ~ Cat

Wildcrafting With Eve Miranda Joe Pye Weed... Daisy Family (Eupatorium purpurem) other names include Queen of the Meadow, Purple Boneset, Kidney Wort, and Gravel Weed. Roots are used mostly... It has long been used for bladder, kidney and gout problems. It has been most appreciated by folks who are trying to pass a stone. But in early days, a native doctor, used the plant to treat patients with Typhus and thankful folks began calling the plant after him, thus Joe Pye Weed. Cherokees used it to help with any urinary problems but they also made use of its stems to be able to suck water from shallow springs and to administer medicines by using the stems as little blowguns. Wildcrafting, continued: The Chippawa used a decoction of dried roots to make a warm wash for aching joints. This lovely pink flowering autumn plant has a hollow stem and must be dug carefully rather than trying to pull it up since it has a tendency to snap off at ground level. I also use it in landscaping because if in early summer you top it out, its branches will provide a show stopping multiheaded fluff of pink in autumn. I would caution medicinal users to always eat bananas while taking Joe Pye weed since it is such a powerful diuretic, it could deplete the potassium needed for good health.

SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN FAMILIY FARMS

Southern Appalachian Family Farms Group was birthed in Cherokee, Graham, and Clay Counties of southwesern North Carolina. It began with a small group of people who had a strong desire to see our local economy improve especially for area farmers. Since that time members have been busy building a strong foundation for this undertaking to stand on. A Board of Directors was elected. They are as follows: Co-Chairs-Preston Mashburn and Judith Johnson Treasurer-Ed Wood Secretary-Dave Ackerman Board Member-Eve Miranda Board Member-Cathy Merckens Board Member-Charles Kissling A mission statement was created, it reads; The mission of the Southern Appalachian Family Farms is to preserve the agricultural heritage of rural WNC by developing both local and alternative sustainable markets to provide opportunities for our area farmers to utilize their land in more profitable ventures through access to resources, education and networking efforts. Board Members are currently working on a business plan that will enable this project to keep moving and to receive funds to help it grow. Our ultimate goal is to provide local farmers and growers with the opportunity to sell their products on an internet based business website to high-end restaurants. SAFF members will also utilize greenhouse growing and crop extenders. This will let farmers maximize growing all year long. Through the incredible support of local expert resource persons SAFF has been able to make progress that would have been impossible otherwise. Our continuing thanks to the Graham, Cherokee and Clay County Extension Offices and the Tri-County Community College Small Business Center and Economic and Workforce Development Department. SAFF meets every fourth Thursday of the month. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Tri-County Community College Building in Marble, NC. For more information contact Judith Johnson at 828-644-8336 or e-mail judithf.johnson5@gmail.com.

Surgeon General’s Warning: Smoking causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, and may complicate Pregnancy.

Instead, we need to make sure we are aiming at the right one – Satan. This devious wrongdoer works overtime trying to tear marriages into tiny pieces. He whispers in ears, “He should appreciate you more. Who does he think he is? You deserve better.” You do deserve better – better than the refuse heap in which Satan wishes to cast your marriage. You deserve to share in the marriage Christ intended for you. You deserve a happily ever after. So if everything is falling down around you, and over your shoulder you hear the hiss, “You deserve better,” don’t make the mistake of aiming at the wrong thing. It will only end in disappointment for you both. Set your sights and fire at the one who deserves the suffering. Then reach out your hand for our Almighty Father. Lord, so many are hurting today. There are those reading these words that have marriages in need of healing. I call on Your power to reach down and pick up the pieces and make them whole. Raise beauty from the ashes, Lord. Help those involved understand the role Satan has taken in destroying their bonds. Give them the courage to accept the help that only You can give. Bless each marriage touched by these words. Lord, there are some whose marriages have already been destroyed, and they are still standing in the fallout wondering what happened. Give them hope and faith that You will carry them through. I ask this in Your precious name, amen.

“Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Matthew 16:23 NIV It should have been one of the happiest times of our lives. But somehow I found myself, arms crossed, registry scanner in hand, pouting in the home goods section of Target. After six years of dating, I convinced my sweetheart to give up wearing ratty t-shirts with holes and persuaded him to take me to chick flicks like How to Make an American Quilt, but somehow he was standing firm with his quest to register for wooden salt and pepper shakers. Wooden. Seriously, I couldn’t understand. How could I possibly season my culinary selections with wooden salt and pepper shakers that reminded me of 1970’s wood paneling? I couldn’t. Uh-uh. No way. Not me. I stood staring at the non-stick frying pans and waited. “Fine,” he spewed, exasperated and too tired to continue the disagreement. “Pick whatever ones you want.” I walked to the glass, restaurant-style shakers with purpose. I raised the scanner gun, aimed at the barcode, and pulled the trigger. Blip. Unfortunately, in my haste, I scanned the wrong shakers. Marriages today are under attack, and I believe we are pointing our guns the wrong way. When “for better” turns to “for worse,” husbands and wives are turning to each other and firing with CAROL HATCHER is a wife, both barrels. Both parties end up mother, teacher, and writer. She wounded. and her husband, Alan, live in Buford, Georgia with their three children. Carol and Alan teach classes Lord, there are some whose on marriage, as well as lead marriage conferences. The Green Column

by Richard C. MacCrea, Andrews Valley Initiative

In order for the green movement to create jobs, a long bridge must be crossed, that of education. Local green builders deal with a lack of training among their workers. Organizations like the Southern Appalachian Sustainable Building Council and local builders associations have approached local high schools and community colleges about creating green building programs. The schools are interested in helping people fit into the local job market. But the colleges have a valid concern. Setting up a program like this, organizing a curriculum, and hiring teachers is all very expensive. What if they build it and no one comes? They need to see an interest in taking these courses. Are you a laid off construction worker? Are you tired of watching TV reruns? Can you invest some of this time learning about green building? Is there financial aid for your job training? Research online; ask the employment offices and local colleges. Meanwhile, do your own self-education. The Internet has volumes of information. If you are not online, do your research for free at the library. Start on these web sites: buildingscience.com, southface. org, healthybuilthomes.org. epa.gov/greenbuilding/ and usgbc. org. Research phrases like “green construction”, “energy efficient buildings”, etc. There are many promising fields in green construction: HVAC (heating, ventilation, and cooling) systems consume more energy in our buildings than anything else. Learning how to design and install more efficient systems could help people reduce their cost of living while keeping them more comfortable. Insulation installers are key to making buildings energy efficient. There is a huge need to bring older buildings up to standard. Remodeling is our largest area of potential for reducing energy consumption. Many times the energy savings can pay for the improvements. Energy “Raters” are experts trained to find ways to reduce energy loss. They might pressure test the building and its HVAC system for leaks. Thermal imaging photography can identify where the hidden leaks are. Computer software can be used to create an energy model of the structure to help them calculate the best ways to save energy for that specific building. There is also a need for radon remediation. Home inspections often uncover unhealthy levels of radon and this can stand in the way of a sale. Study areas outside your field. Understanding how all the systems of a building work together is very important for everyone working on green projects. It can also put you ahead of the line for re-employment, and you will be more proud of your work. Maybe you are ingenious enough to discover a new way to help people reduce energy costs? Our next column will consider our Greening of Andrews Valley Program. Your question might be the perfect topic for a future column. Email me. Richard C. MacCrea is the director of The Greening of Andrews Valley, a program of Andrews Valley Initiative. He works in the field of energy efficient, green building.
