“For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed” (1 Corinthians 15:9-11).
Change is all around. It is evident in everything that we do, from the young growing up to the dent you accidentally put in your car (or someone else’s). Things change all the time, and it is important to recognize the changes that God has brought within our own lives. In 1 Corinthians 15:9-11, we find part of a Scripture written by Paul. Paul was a bad man, for, before his salvation through Christ, Paul directly persecuted the church. However, when Paul found 30 // November 2021
salvation through Jesus, he became a changed man and made it his goal to spread the gospel. In many ways, it is thanks to Paul that we have the modernday structure of the church.
In these Scriptures, Paul recognizes who he used to be. However, he states that by the grace of God, he has become who he is today. He worked harder than the rest of the apostles—many of whom had not delved as deep into sin as Paul himself—to build up the Kingdom of God. One can only speculate that this was Paul’s way of repaying Christ for the joy that salvation had brought him. We have all gone through many changes, and we are not who we used to be. God has a plan for each of our lives, and it is time we get back to the basics of our relationship with Christ. By the grace of God, we are saved, and that means something. We are not defined by our pasts, by our mistakes, or by our regrets. We are defined as children of God—saved through His son Jesus Christ, born again, and ready to do something amazing.
In short, you are not as bad as you think you are. God’s mercy will always extend to you, no matter how deep into sin you go. We have been given a new start, so let us make the best of it!
