Safety In A Burrow

Ihave always wanted my kids to have an appreciation for nature and how God has created nature to be present in our daily lives. For a little over three years, we were a part of a nature enriched homeschool program. It was honestly one of the best decisions I ever made for us all to get out of our comfort zone. Due to that program, we not only learned more about
our environment and how to take care of it, but we learned about the wild edibles you can eat, the seasons in which they grow, and how to turn a nature lesson into anywhere you visit. We recently went on a family camping trip to a local Georgia State Park. At this specific State Park, it is known for Indigo snakes and Gopher tortoises. The park recently had a controlled burn, which allowed us to further see the actual Gopher tortoise burrows. So my kids had a blast going from burrow to burrow to just peek inside to see if there was anything in there. As a homeschool mom, in my finest homeschool mom moments, we turned this trip into something educational. Before we went, we discussed the animals that may live there in that area, and we read books about the specific animals. One book discussed how the Gopher tortoise homes were sometimes shared by other animals and could house up to 365 different animals at different times! We were walking on the Gopher Tortoise Trail, and we came upon a burrow where we finally saw a Gopher Tortoise! It also had a snake in the burrow with it! We really did get lucky, because we did not find anymore, just that one that day, and it really was sharing its burrow with another animal. This idea made me think of our lives today. There is so much anger and animosity in the World for just thinking differently or having different values. As we are left fighting amongst ourselves, instead of focusing on the things that are holy and righteous, we can learn from animals that don’t belong together how to find safety in a burrow. Another animal’s home; that is opened up to help protect those that are not alike. Isn’t that how we are supposed to live to show Jesus’ love to others, no matter the differences?
