Hamilton Medical Center: Advanced Primary Stroke Center

Hamilton Medical Center is an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. Not all area hospitals have this distinction. In addition, Hamilton has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission for healthcare quality.

When experiencing the symptoms of a stroke, every second counts. So does getting the right level of care as quickly as possible. Hamilton Medical Center has a nationally ranked, highly trained Rapid Stroke Team on staff, ready to care for you 24/7.

An ischemic stroke can occur when a blood vessel that feeds oxygen and blood to the brain is blocked by a clot. According to the American Stroke Association, 87% of strokes are ischemic. A stroke can also occur when a blood vessel ruptures, spilling blood into the surrounding brain. This is called a hemorrhagic stroke. About 13% of all strokes are hemorrhagic.

A stroke starves the brain of the nutrients it needs. If a stroke interrupts blood flow to a particular part of the brain that controls a body function, that part of the body won’t work normally. That’s why stroke is a leading cause of disability in the U.S. Quick medical treatment is crucial to minimize the long-term effects of stroke and to reduce the risk of death.

Hamilton Medical Center Receives National Stroke Award

Hamilton Medical Center recently received a national stroke award from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The Get with The Guidelines® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award recognizes Hamilton’s commitment to providing stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

“Hamilton is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our stroke patients by implementing the American Heart Association’s Get with The Guidelines-Stroke initiative,” said Meagan Darnell, Hamilton Medical Center’s stroke program coordinator.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the U.S. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
