April Showers Bring May Flowers
from March 2020
by Bruce Sloan
March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers is an old English children’s rhyme. It reflects a feeling that the changing weather is ushering in a new season. A time to wear bright colors and move out of our winter caves to the welcoming outdoors.

The Gospel of Mark sends us a wonderful announcement that Jesus teaches His disciples that God is not the God of the dead but of the living. He is referring to the moment that God told Moses that He is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. God is speaking in the present tense that these men are still alive. Easter Sunday is about that life which is eternal.
We engage in spring cleaning where we try our best to make good on our promise to keep our life uncluttered. What we might not realize, is the clutter we are complaining about is our attempt to keep the past.
Earthly goods, those things that will cease to be, are to be used and not collected. In the wilderness, God gave Israel the bread they needed everyday. His promise was that he would keep them in food and water.
When we attempt to store up God’s gifts to us permanently, we spoil both the gift and ourselves. At times, we can build a wall of clutter between ourselves and God. God gives us the gift of an eternal future, and we hide behind boxes of worthless trinkets.
Awaken to this new day as the gift it is to you from God. As the robin is scouting out the placement of her
new nest, we can be seeking the Kingdom of God. When the winds of March blows the fresh winds across our face, we are reminded of the freshness of the Holy Spirit filling our life.
God has not called us for our self alone. We are called to be the living light of life to others. We do not want to hide our light or life under a basket of earthly
goods, but to be the voice of hope, joy, love and faith.
God is all knowledge and wisdom. It was God who created these seasons of our life. It very possible that God is guiding you to blessings unseen. God knows the future for you, and that future leads to real life. Life not only for today but for all eternity.
Enjoy the winds of March and live expectantly for the spring that is coming for you.
