Led Zeppelin Crashed Here

R.E.M. Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods 1016 East Broad Street Athens, Georgia 706-353-7797 The slogan on the outside of this down-home cafe reads, Delicious Fine Foods— Automatic for the People. The slogan inspired the name of the 1992 smash album by R.E.M., and soon Weaver D’s (home of delicious southern fried chicken and vegetables served on molded styrofoam plates) became a national phenomenon.

Wuxtry Records 197 East Clayton Street Athens, Georgia 706-369-9428 It was at this legendary new and used record store that then-store assistant Peter Buck met Michael Stipe and the two decided to try and form a band. Years later, Buck tried again to work here, but his success got in the way because too many fans asked him to sign records. The store (and its sister shop in Atlanta) remains a vital resource for music lovers (and they also have an upstairs area with tons of comics and other pop culture ephemera).

Replacements 2215 Bryant Avenue South Minneapolis, Minnesota Bob Stinson and his brother Tommy (guitar and bass players, respectively) lived here, and it was in the basement of the house where their band the Replacements was formed and cultivated. Their first public show took place in 1979 at an alcoholic’s halfway house.
