Fox Venice 620 Lincoln Avenue Venice, California In the mid-1970s, this theater was one of the most active creative hotspots in the greater Los Angeles area. Movies were screened here, and there were Love-Ins and lots of noted concerts, featuring musical acts such as Little Feat, Big Joe Turner, and Bonnie Raitt. In fact, John Lee Hooker recorded a live album here with Canned Heat (Live at the Fox Venice). Today, it still stands, but it’s an indoor swap meet.

On June 13, 1975, Peter Frampton and his band recorded a live concert here, much of which was used on Frampton Comes Alive, one of the largest selling albums of that decade. The Grateful Dead rented the facility for months in the ’80s, using the 2,000-seat concert hall as a recording studio as they laid down the basic tracks for their 1989 release, Built to Last.
