Stabat Mater Below is the English translation of the Stabat Mater used in this commentary. It is a more literal rendering than the traditional and well-known version by Fr Edward Caswell CO. Whilst some of the poetic feel Fr Caswell was able to convey in his beloved translation is lost, this version reveals more of what is happening in the original Latin text, and is therefore more fruitful for commentary. However, Fr Caswell’s translation is still preferable as a text for devotion, and so is included at the end of this book for use in private prayer and meditation (see page 73).
