2014 Annual Report

Thriving Families. Independent Seniors.

Dr. Bertha Bouroncle Pereny

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends, 2014 was a banner year for Catholic Social Services: We celebrated the opening of a collaborative Catholic Outreach location in Portsmouth. Our Lady of Guadalupe Center continued to grow from a food pantry into a true community center for Columbus’ Hispanic families. Our pilot Friendly Visiting program took off as we provided more seniors with regular companionship. And we positioned ourselves to respond to Ohio’s infant mortality crisis by expanding our Maternal Health Counseling services. But expansion was only part of our success. Last year, we began a strategic planning process that continues to make us a stronger organization. The rallying point of our efforts has been identifying our core values: Compassion, Respect, Impact, Courage, and Excellence. What we discovered in this process is that these values have been at the heart of our work from the beginning; they came to us easily and are now a decision-making tool we use to gauge success.

Rachel Lustig President & CEO

We see our values in action every day both in the work we do and in the way you, our supporters, participate in that work. We are particularly grateful for the investment of your time, talent and treasure. We witness you live out our shared values with clients at the Guadalupe Center, in conference rooms pouring over strategy, in the notes that accompany your contributions, and with seniors in their homes. Without YOUR commitment to our values and mission, we would not be able to help over 11,000 poor and vulnerable seniors and families each year. Thank you to all of our donors, volunteers, and supporters. Articulating the kind of organization we are and want to be has been an uplifting, inspiring process. As we look ahead to what will be another transformative year for Catholic Social Services we are grateful to you, to our clients, and to our God for giving us the love and strength to help families thrive and keep seniors independent.

Blessings,

“I live by myself, but I’m not lonely thanks to my Friendly Visitor...”

June, an 84-year-old widow whose children live hours away, had an active social life until her health declined and she could no longer drive. Our Friendly Visiting program paired her with Hannah, a fellow book and travel-lover, who visits every week to share tea and conversation. Though they are separated by over 50 years in age, these women have a vibrant friendship. And most importantly, June is no longer socially isolated.

Celebrating a Legacy

Dr. Bertha Bouroncle Pereny’s gift to help families thrive In 2014, we were honored to receive a legacy gift from Dr. Bertha Bouroncle Pereny, a Peruvian immigrant whose success in medicine saved thousands of lives. Dr. Bouroncle’s gift will be used to continue the expansion of services for families at Our Lady of Guadalupe Center, and her story will inspire generations of Hispanic immigrants who seek welcome & opportunity.

In May, we celebrated Dr. Bouroncle’s life and legacy with a fiesta at the Guadalupe Center.

Another successful

Breakfast with theBishop =

This year’s annual breakfast event drew

500 supporters

from the diocese and community. Our theme, Building Bridges Out of Poverty, was addressed by the Most Rev. Bishop Frederick F. Campbell and Jodi Pfarr. Both emphasized the importance of increased consideration for poor people and personal action in response to human need.

Thank you!

After breakfast, we hosted our staff and

125 community leaders

in a workshop led by Ms. Pfarr. She trained the group in the Bridges Out of Poverty community model.

YOU are helping poor and vulnerable seniors and families reach their potential.

In 2014, volunteers doubled our staff capacity! Our volunteers answer Christ’s call to serve others with loving compassion; without them, we could not serve over 11,000 people each year.
