Cardio-Oncology Synergy between cardiology and oncology

The Catholic Health cardio-oncology service evaluates and treats patients who have heart disease or who are at risk of heart disease prior to, during, and after treatment for cancer. We closely collaborate with your medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and oncology surgeon, allowing us to customize the best cancer therapies for each patient balanced against the cardiac effects and risk factors. This service, tailored for active cancer patients and survivors, starts from preventive efforts to diagnostics and therapeutic interventions.

Heart care before, during and after cancer therapy • Patients getting cancer treatment, or those who are cancer survivors, may need special care for the heart. • Our doctors tailor the treatment/prevention plan to your specific cancer type, and cancer treatment. • Our service is run by board-certified cardiologists who have completed sub-specialty training in the field of cardio-oncology. • Catholic Health is one of a few medical centers in the U.S. with dedicated expertise in cardiovascular care for cancer (oncology) patients and survivors.

Referral to the cardio-oncology service A referral to the cardio-oncology service will comprise of a comprehensive consultation and evaluation with one of the service’s physicians.

Oncology service line referrals for • Pre-operative optimization • High-risk cancer treatment • Cardiovascular risk factors • Cardiovascular complications • Cardiac surveillance • Survivorship clinics • Cardiac tumors

The evaluation may include medical imaging to better understand a patient’s cardiovascular condition. An individualized treatment plan will then be developed for each patient. Treatment varies according to the type of heart condition, the patient’s progress, whether they have any other underlying conditions, and whether they are currently under cancer treatment.

Each year there are nearly 2 million new cancer cases in the United States, and many of these patients will receive life-prolonging cancer therapy that may impact the heart. And, owing to advances in oncology, there are now 18 million adult cancer survivors in the United States. Many cancer survivors are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This occurs due to the increasing age of the patients, risk factors common to both cancer and heart disease, and damage to the heart from several cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transplantation and radiation. The Catholic Health cardio-oncology service helps patients live full, vibrant lives by protecting your quality of life and long-term heart health. Using the latest imaging technology and research, our doctors prevent heart damage, make efforts to detect any problems as early as possible and carefully manage your specific condition.

Our mission: The goal of the cardiooncology service is to: • Ensure patients with cancer can receive the most appropriate cancer therapy while minimizing their risk of heart complications. • Treat heart conditions among cancer patients or cancer survivors and/or prevent heart disease among those who may be at-risk. Our vision: Our vision is provide comprehensive and compassionate cardio-oncology care based on the latest medical treatments available We treat oncology patients before, during, and after cancer therapy to promote heart health.

Services offered: If you are receiving treatment for cancer—or are a cancer survivor—you may be at higher risk for heart disease. The cardio-oncology service helps you protect your heart from side effects so that you can complete your life-prolonging cancer therapy. Our team also helps manage your long-term heart health after you complete cancer treatment. We provide the following services: • Risk assessment prior to cancer treatment: Before undergoing medical, radiation or surgical treatments for cancer, it is important to understand your risk for developing cardiovascular disease. We work closely with your oncologist and surgical team to provide a comprehensive evaluation prior to cancer therapy to minimize any potential cardiovascular complications from cancer treatment. We combine a complete, personalized assessment with appropriate diagnostic testing and optimal cardiovascular therapies to help ensure your best outcome. • Care for cancer patients with existing cardiovascular disease: Management of conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, heart valve disease and arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) in cancer patients requires an approach customized to their overall care. Our goal is to treat existing cardiac conditions so that you are healthy enough to respond well to your cancer treatment.

• Monitoring for cardiac complications from cancer therapy: If you are actively receiving chemotherapy or have previously completed chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, you may experience symptoms related to hypertension, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, pericardial disease, myocarditis and arrhythmias. With early recognition and treatment, many complications of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy can be managed successfully so that the patient can complete the prescribed cancer therapy. • Assessment of long-term cardiac risk in cancer survivors: There is increasing evidence that shows that survivors of cancer face higher risks of cardiovascular disease. We provide a comprehensive risk assessment that includes a detailed history, physical examination, lab work and diagnostic testing. We review strategies to reduce cardiac risk include dietary and lifestyle modifications and, when appropriate, medical therapy. • Assessment of new chemotherapies: Many of the new chemotherapeutic agents in clinical and pre-clinical studies have the potential to damage the heart (cardiotoxicity). We administer advanced diagnostic tests to identify cardiotoxicities for patients undergoing treatment with new chemotherapies. These may include diagnostic imaging and stress testing, serum biomarkers (blood tests which can indicate heart dysfunction), ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and ambulatory cardiac telemetry (continuous monitoring of a patient’s heart from a remote location) which can help identify cardiotoxicities and lead to the development of preventative strategies.
