For 80 years, the many ministries of Catholic Charities have addressed the most basic human needs within the Diocese of Wichita. Catholic Charities is truly where the love of the community comes together to give hope to those most in need.

During our most recent fiscal year, we encouraged members of the community to Love Like Christ by sharing in the work of Catholic Charities through financial support or volunteerism. Thousands in the community responded generously, allowing us to serve thousands more who live within the 25 counties in southcentral and southeast Kansas which comprise the Diocese of Wichita.

We are forever grateful to those who share in our mission. The charitable support of individuals, businesses and foundations allows our staff and volunteers to be the hands and feet of Jesus by feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless and abused, and enriching the lives of the stranger, the lonely and the disabled in our Kansas communities. We see the face of Christ in each we serve; to each we offer love and hope.

The work of Catholic Charities, which is framed by Catholic values and social teaching, is supported by several funding streams. To continue the work of Catholic Charities in our 80th year and beyond, we will continue to rely on diversified funding streams to ensure the long-term financial health of the organization.

We rely greatly and gratefully on the generosity of individual donors who share our mission. Our charitable donors are the foundation on which Catholic Charities builds our ministries. About Catholic Charities Wichita Catholic Charities has been serving the needs of individuals and communities within the Diocese of Wichita for 80 years. Our many ministries meet people wherever they are in life, whether they are hungry, homeless, disabled, lonely or abused. Together, our ministries focus on a singular mission of sharing God’s love by caring for all people.

Our staff and volunteers share God’s love by serving all in need, regardless of faith, within the 25 counties in southcentral and southeast Kansas that comprise the Diocese of Wichita. We focus on three priority areas: hunger & homelessness, domestic violence and enrichment services.

“It was just he and I for a lot of years,” she recalls, admitting that she eventually lost custody of him due to poor decisions and substance abuse. “He remembered what I did good for him and wanted me at his high school graduation.”

Kathy first met Marilyn years ago when she was at a treatment center and Marilyn was the secretary there.

They re-connected several years later when Kathy received a referral to the Rapid Re-Housing Program which is an outreach program at St. Anthony Family Shelter. Marilyn was her case manager.

When the two embraced after the ceremony, her son assured Kathy that he didn’t hate her. “He said, ‘Mom, you got me here. Even though you were struggling, you always made sure I had everything that I needed.

I knew you wouldn’t stay on that stuff,’” Kathy shares.

Marilyn identified a landlord willing to rent Kathy a place where she and her young daughter could live.

Funds from the Rapid Re-Housing Program helped Kathy with her rent payments for a time. During their monthly meetings, Marilyn connected Kathy to a number of community resources.

SAFE Project and Harbor House

A survivor finds hope and safety “Every time I’ve reached out to Catholic Charities, I’ve never been judged. They have accepted me, given me a positive experience and helped me become a better version of myself.”

Without Harbor House at Catholic Charities, Hailey believes she would be stuck in a dark cloud of misery and despair; still being abused, possibly homeless and likely separated from her son. Instead, with the help of case managers at Harbor House and SAFE Project, Hailey says she is now “the most stable that I’ve ever been in my life.”

The journey to a life free from abuse often requires both shelter and supportive outreach over a period of time. Hailey has stayed at Harbor House three times since 2019, and continues to count on her SAFE Project case manager for support.

Hailey first came to Harbor House when her abuser’s father stood up to him and drove her to a Wichita police station. Her son was placed in foster care. She stayed in shelter about eight months while she healed from physical and mental trauma, found employment and transitional housing, and worked on a reintegration plan to get her son back.

In 2021, Hailey went to Indiana, where she originally lived, in order to escape an abusive relationship in Wichita. The abuser continued to track and stalk her as she attempted to start a new life. Hailey reached out to Harbor House and spoke with Kate. Kate assisted Hailey by creating a safety plan and by making travel plans for Hailey to return to Wichita to receive services from Harbor House.

She and her son stayed in shelter for six weeks.

She worked twice as hard during this stay, focusing on her physical and mental health, and meeting her new SAFE Project case manager, Karlee. With Karlee’s guidance, Hailey established a budget plan, and set and accomplished numerous goals. A local dentist donated his time and materials to repair multiple broken teeth, giving her a brand new smile. She started a job at The Women’s Network, where she also takes advantage of their support groups and mentoring programs.

In November 2021, her son was choked by her former abuser during a visitation, landing him in prison and her son back in foster care. Hailey returned to Harbor House for the weekend so she could regroup in a safe place, have the support of a court advocate during police interviews, and work out a new housing plan with her case manager. By mid-summer 2022, she was reintegrated with her son.

“Harbor House was my best help,” she says, reflecting on the past three years.

Hailey believes her experiences can help others.

She wants to support parents who are working on reintegration plans for their children and connect people to community resources.

“I had somebody hold my hand and I want to do the same for others,” Hailey, the survivor, says. “At the end of the day, if I can help one person that would be my biggest accomplishment.”

Adult Day Services

Tony’s happy place is Adult Day Services Barb Parker wants for her son, Tony, exactly what she wants for her other two adult children: to feel safe, to have a sense of belonging and to wake up each morning happy to head out the door to wherever they are going.

For Tony, the place that makes him feel safe, accepted and happy is Adult Day Services at Catholic Charities.

Through 18 months of the pandemic when his previous day program provider was closed, the 36-year-old Tony would accompany his mom to her classroom at Wichita Heights High School as she would virtually teach her special education students.

As she worried about whether or not Tony was happy with that arrangement, a colleague shared with her that his family was looking into Adult Day Services for a family member. That was the first she had heard of the program.

“We went to take a tour and were really impressed with the facility, the organization and the kindness we saw,” Barb says. “But I was leery of a new place and asked him, ‘will you be happy here?’ After COVID, Tony deserved to have some joy in his life.”

To make the transition easier, Tony started out going to ADS two days a week. “After two weeks, he said ‘Mom, they have parties’ and asked to go another day, so we added a third day,” she recalls.

Two more times in the coming weeks Tony asked Barb if he could go another day until he was enrolled five days a week. Now, nearly a year later, he is still happy and having fun. His favorite time of the day is when he is outside at the recently completed accessible recreation area. He relishes community outings to the zoo or park, and talking sports with fellow participants or staff.

But Tony does more than have fun. He also helps.

“Tony has a soft heart, compassion and a need to nurture,” Barb says.

“He loves to help.”

Knowing he is happy and okay, I can walk into work and do my job.

Despite towering over most other participants, the 6-foot, 9-inch Tony often comforts a fellow participant who is having a rough day. Each afternoon he looks forward to being called to the multipurpose room to help stack chairs and put tables away for the day.

Barb and Tony have a routine that benefits both of them. Barb drops him off at 7:30 each morning on her way to Wichita Heights, and picks him up at 3:30 p.m. after her school day ends.

“I know that I’m leaving him in good hands and he will be taken care of,” she says. “Knowing he is happy and okay, I can walk into work and do my job.”

Karen and Steve Our Daily Bread Food Pantry

Called by God to help the mission “How can you see suffering and poverty, and not want to help?”

For Steve and Karen Jones, the answer to Elder Jones’ question is simple: they are called by God to help.

Even if that call means living away from their home and family for two years.

The couple, who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and live near Salt Lake City, Utah, are among 30 senior missionaries in Kansas.

They are serving the hungry at Our Daily Bread Food Pantry at Catholic Charities and teach English classes, including two classes for refugees served by IRC. “We all love it. The Lord knows where we need to go,” says Elder Jones. “We spend about two-thirds of our time in service to the community, and about one-third of our time in service to the church.”

Those of us in service could be just one unfortunate circumstance away from needing help.

When looking for ways to serve the Wichita community, they searched the web for opportunities and discovered Our Daily Bread Food Pantry.

“It sounded like fun and a good way to help. We like the way Our Daily Bread gives food with a personal touch and with dignity,” Elder Jones says. The couple is now an integral part of the group of volunteers who serve every Tuesday. “It is the highlight of our week.

We left a family at home, but found family here.”

For Sister Jones, the opportunity has allowed them to establish friendships with peers their own age.

“We have felt welcomed and the hand of friendship was immediately extended,” she says. “Catholic Charities does great work and the response has been very positive both ways.”

Elder Jones’ ability to speak fluent Spanish, a language he learned in two months of training before a mission to Bolivia as a young adult 50 years ago, has helped Our Daily Bread be more welcoming to clients who speak little or no English. He has created information sheets in Spanish that explain the pantry’s documentation requirements to help the check in process run smoother. He also is available to speak one-one-one with any client during his Tuesday shift.

“We have realized how much alike each of us is,” Sister Jones says. “Those of us in service could be just one unfortunate circumstance away from needing help.”

They agree that their first year in Wichita has been a wonderful experience, and they look forward to continuing as volunteers at Our Daily Bread until their mission ends in the fall of 2023.

“We are all God’s children,” Elder Jones says.

“All those we serve help us come closer to Christ and experience His love,” Sister Jones adds. “We are able to practice true discipleship. We need them as much as they need us.”
