Finally doing whatever it took to protect her child, mom said “let’s go”….and you went. Without your shoes. The paragraph above is not a fiction story written by a Hollywood screen writer. It’s a story that recently happened at Harbor House. And here’s how you, the donors made a difference.
How You Make a Difference by Charlie Moon, Development
t’s the week school starts. Time to reengage friends, meet the teacher, find a place to sit at lunch. You know, pick out new school clothes, new shoes. Unless…..unless your mother and you recently left an abusive relationship. Leaving is a foggy memory for you, nobody said anything other than “let’s go”, it was dark, and all you had was your pajamas. No shoes, no jeans, no stuffed animals. But mom said “let’s go” in a tone of voice that let you know it was time to do what mom said. No negotiation. When you left, you also left behind fear. You left behind the pillow you cried into when you were sent to bed so “your mother and I can settle this once and for all”….and then you’d hear your mother cry and you’d hear noises no kid….no one should ever hear.
You gave to the “Children’s Fund”. A fund devoted to kids having things that kids ought to have. Like a pair of shoes to wear to school. Or a basketball uniform so a child doesn’t have to sit on the sidelines and watch the other kids play. Or maybe actually buy school pictures rather than just put them in the return box. Or here’s one…….how about a pair of glasses so the student can see the chalkboard. We can’t show you photos of little kid’s faces. Their abuser might run across this story and cause problems again. But I promise you that when a kid who doesn’t have shoes…and they get shoes…. they smile. Thank you for helping us help kids. Thank you for giving us the ability to give moms a hand up in their time of need. To say “we couldn’t do it without you” is a fact. When you’d like to know more about how you can get involved and make a difference, call me. I’m Charlie Moon my phone number is (316) 202-0617. You’ll be glad you did. Thank you!
