Nov.–Dec. 2009

The 2009 Membership drive started at the Annual Convention in August and there’s still two more months before the deadline. Here’s an update to remind you of details that will help you and your council. So far, 30 CAA members like you have referred 111 people to become new members. Your participation in this effort is vital! Plus, your council could add $1,000 to spend on helping others in your community if your council refers the most people that become members! Second place and third place councils receive $750 and $500! Every council that meets the 10 new-member goal gets $200 from CAA. Members who refer the most people who become new members can win individual prizes. 1st place is $500; 2nd place is $250; 3rd place wins $100. Just referring one new member earns a member a $20 CAA merchandise credit to our Catholic Aid online store. It’s not too late to get a Member Drive Kit if you need more promotional supplies. Contact the Fraternal Staff. There are several ways you can help your council reach the “10 by 2010” goal. Contact us to learn more.

What’s In a Name? • We need to eliminate the name confusion with similar organizations. In a recent survey of non-member Catholics, exactly 70 percent thought CAA was a charitable organization or a disaster relief group. • Our name must describe who we are and what we do. It must have “Catholic” in the name, and must reflect that we are a financial services organization. What are our next steps? We are gathering name suggestions from members and non-members through Jan. 1, 2010. Send your ideas to President Mike McGovern or to me. Name options will be discussed at the Board and Constitution Committee meetings during first quarter 2010. We will continue to publish updates on this process via video, CAA Journey magazine, Fraternal Dispatch newsletter and at council events. I welcome your thoughts on this important issue. Feel free to give me a call or send an email. Your support is essential to this process.

Delegates to the CAA Convention last August had the opportunity to view CAA’s newest video, “What’s in a Name?” The video includes interviews with a variety of people close to CAA and is now available on DVD to councils through the Fraternal Department or your Field Representative. I encourage you to discuss the updating of the CAA name with your council officers and members. Our goal is to present a proposed name for approval by two-thirds majority of delegates at Annual Convention in August 2010. Here are some key points and a timeline for the process ahead as our Board of Directors, management and members move forward with name selection in 2010. • An updated name places us in a position of strength against stiff competition from commercial and mutual companies.

So, what counts as a council activity? Read on. If your council is struggling to meet its activity requirements, read on. Reportable activities of your local council are not limited to programs and events discussed in your Fraternal Manual. Generally, any activity that brings people together and promotes CAA to ALL parishioners will be considered. How Are Activities Counted? • Attending funerals and wakes count as one activity. • Parish maintenance done once a month is one activity, not twelve. • If your council leads the rosary at daily Mass, that is one activity. • Volunteer programs count as one activity each. • Each Matching Grant event held during the year counts as a separate activity. • Each Member Assistance fundNov.-Dec. 2009

raiser is a separate activity. • Any social activities such as breakfasts, luncheons or dinners count as separate events (having refreshments after a meeting does not count as an activity). • Each council newsletter published and mailed to members is a separate activity. Print and email newsletters count. • Attendance at the Annual Convention is required to maintain active council status and does not count as an activity. • Councils can receive credit for an activity when they honor 50-year members, only if they are present at a special event. Having a variety of different activities is important to keep your council vibrant. The special causes that Catholic Aid supports take on

added importance to being a member. If, at the end of the year, your council needs more activities to attain the desired silver, gold or platinum level, use some of these ideas. Up to two donations can count as activities as well. Contact the Fraternal Department for approval before your council makes a donation.

Nov. 14, 2009 will be the first meeting of the Young Adult Advisory Team. The Young Adult Advisory Team’s primary purpose is to explore how Catholic Aid can increase visibility, promote volunteerism, and foster spirituality in Catholic Aid’s young people. Also, the team will look at how young people can assist Catholic Aid councils in strengthening relationships with youth. Youth ministers and young members are invited to participate. Please contact Heather for more information.

Kindle interest, support through joint installations What’s the best way for councils to get a new spirit, feel enthused for the new year, and feel connected to their Catholic communities? Hold a joint installation! “There’s no better way to generate energy in a council,” said Dean Demarais, CAA Field Representative in the Cold Spring, Minn., area. “Joint installations are a nice way to get all fraternal people together so they see each other, don’t feel alone, share all that they are doing and voice their frustrations.” Dean encourages people to attend a joint installation so they can share their feelings, ideas, and encouraging words. “This is a refreshing event for councils and it allows an opportunity

to bond councils together. Also, it is easier to get more people to come to one event rather than five.” A typical joint installation includes Mass, a meal, and an installation ceremony. Councils can also hold Regional Workshops on the same date. President Michael McGovern typically presides over the ceremony, and members of the Fraternal Department staff provide training on programs and guidelines. How do council members respond to these events? “The response is always very good! All councils participate, most officers attend, and they enjoy an evening with other Catholics, and look forward to next year,” said Dean. “It is also a great spiritual

event. We go away feeling blessed and rejuvenated from Mass.” When planning your installation of officers event, consider Dean Damarais, Field Rep from joining with one Cold Spring, Minn. or more nearby councils to have a joint installation ceremony. These are wonderful social events for councils to get together and learn from each other -- what they’re doing, what works for them, and get new ideas for activities. To schedule a Joint Installation in your area for 2010, contact your Field Representative.

Fraternal Advisory Meeting Highlights The Fraternal Advisory Committee met on Oct. 15, 2009 for its last meeting of 2009. These topics were discussed: • Deborah Gephart, Assistant Sr. Vice-President, reviewed the 2009 Convention and asked committee members for feedback. She gave an overview of the 2010 Convention schedule. • Steve Wendorf, Marketing Director, gave an update on the Membership Drive and the School Raffle. The group also watched a video on the proposed name update for Catholic Aid and provided feedback. • The committee discussed the area membership meetings for members and non-members to be held in 2010. The committee made suggestions about locations, timing, content and publicity for the meetings. • Heather Vargo, Youth Fraternal Liaison, updated the group on current youth initiatives, such as the “Youth Financial Workshop,” the start of a Young Adult Advisory Team and the results from the NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) Member Benefit for high school-aged members. CAA Management and the Fraternal Department thanked committee members Geraldine Poppler from Waconia, Leonard Seidl from Sleepy Eye and Boni Westberg from Mahtomedi as they completed a three-year term on the committee.
