Taste of Cathedral a Great Success

out crowd on February 3rd at the Italian Club for our annual CVAF Wasn’t Ava Wild amazing? Winner Fundraiser, the “Taste of Catheof the 2017 SOCAN Young Canadral”. It was a fabulous evening of dian Songwriter of the Year award, food and friendship. the chefs who served us a sublime taster’s menu (we ate it all!); the local businesses and artists who contributed items for the silent auction (so many cool things); our tireless volunteers—and a special thank you to everyone who came on such a cold night. Together, we raised over $12000, essential funding for our annual Cathedral Village Arts Festival. This year marks the 27th anniversary for our arts festival, and though we have grown into Saskatchewan’s largest multi-disciplinary arts festival, we continue to focus on supporting local innovation and diversity through creative expression. For CVAF 2018 we have chosen the theme “Expect the Unexpected”. A bit cheeky? It’s our

invitation to come out and try new things. There’s a special magic in discovery, a sense of joy that’s hard to describe in words, but it’s a feeling that Jamie Slawson invokes perfectly with his painting for this year’s festival poster of people blowing soap bubbles, and a laughing child. Floating upward, the delicate shapes transform with the power of imagination. Creating and experimenting are also about passion and getting messy, going beyond “the expected” –qualities that Megan Currie of X-ing Design incorporated into the final poster design. See page 3 for the full poster!

Expect the Unexpected: CVAF 2018 Preview Victoria Day Parade: May 21st

Decorate Your Homes and Yards

the Victoria Day Parade on Monday May 21st marshals at 11 am at Holy Rosary Field, and you can be in it. Decorate your wagons and strollers—if you can push, pull or drag it—bring it on! (Are you part of a group or a business that wants to join the parade? Sign-up with a parade application form on the CVAF website—so we can “Expect the Un-Expected”) What will you wear for a costume? Why not “Wig Out” with a workshop at RPL Connaught Branch

Each year, local school kids donate their art for a community wide exhibition, and we hang their artwork through-out Cathedral. You can get your home or

By Adam Hicks School Board Trustee Adam Hicks Public School Board Trustee Did you know that our School Division has approximately 12% of Regina citizens cross our door steps every single day? There are over 23,000 students in Regina Public Schools that go to school in 41 elementary schools, 8 high schools and one adult campus. We have over 2,200 employees

working with Regina Public, of which, almost 90% are classroom teachers, other educational staff and school administration like principals. When combining these numbers and using the most recent census data, it works out to approximately 12%... yes, 12% of all citizens in Regina, will cross our door steps every single day (or at least on school days)! And it is interesting to note these numbers don’t include parents or caregivers. For every one of our students there is at least one caregiver. That would double to almost triple the percentage of citizens that have a stake in the direct success of our school division. With this mass amount of pressure, it is important that our staff, administration and Board of Education are listening to our community. There has been a

lot of new initiatives that are producing voices for those in our community and helping us guide the organization. One such example is the first annual Indigenous Student Forum held last month. This was organized similar to our annual student forum in which a number of representative students were brought in from all high schools and had an opportunity to provide input into how our schools operate and how we can best ensure all students achieve success. We also hosted the Community Engagement Forum on January 30, 2018. This provided all community members an opportunity to join us in dialogue to help shape the future of the school division. While personally hoping for larger attendance, we had a decent turnout of over 120 people. Of these community members, approximately 55 were not a school division staff member. The night consisted of multiple breakout rooms where everything was on the table including discussions around kindergarten changes, attendance, stress and anxiety, school zones, budgets and so much more. We will be using the feedback to help guide future decisions. Thank you to everyone who attended the Forum and I hope to see you out at future events. Events ALL WEEK!

Never been to “The Festival?” No worries! But you are not going to want to miss this: each year in May our neighbourhood hosts the Cathedral Village Arts Festival. We bring together professional and amateur artists, musicians, students, business people and community members. During the week of May 21st – 26th we will hold over 100 events, featuring local music, theatre, poetry, film, comedy, dance, and visual art for all ages. On Saturday, we’ll close 13th Avenue to traffic, from Albert Street to Elphinstone. Our

Street Fair is Saskatchewan’s largest outdoor craft sale, featuring over 350 vendors, with food trucks and musical stages. Last year over 40,000 people attended festival events. Is it true that it’s all free? Yes! We want to invite everyone to come, so we ask that you pay what you can through donation to each event. That way, we can pay musicians and artists fair rates for their work. Fundraising, sponsorships, grants, community partnerships and generous volunteers make this incredible festival possible each year.

Do you have a knack for setting up and tearing down? We need your awesome skills for our specialized technical team. These tireless folks do all the behind-the-scenes work to make everything run: sounds, lights, stages and everything we need to put on our fabulous festival events. Go to www.CVAF.ca and fill in an application for our technical crew. You will get a free t-shirt and our never-ending gratitude.
