MOD NYC House INTERNSHIP

MOD NYC House Hollis Hills, QueWens, NY

N The client wanted a modern style two story house. Since my time at Architect’s rule the curved roof of the residence has changed and the house is currently under construction. Just shy of 4,000 square feet of living space this U shape design hugs a central courtyard that creates an Oasis in the middle of Queens, NY.

Rive Gauche Train Station

As the architecture’s form, structure and functions couple they become stronger and more complex. The solid more prominent building forms, or the “masculine” allow the user to move quickly and efficiently to a defined destination, while the delicate “female” building forms a distraction and entertains the user though a myriad of programmatic spaces. The bridge that couples both creates harmony between them and acts as the core of the circulation and structure. As the buildings blur and merge together the structure of the bridge dissolves, creating a liberating experience. Just like a couple, each building can sustain themselves individually but together they are fulfilled.

opposite ideas into one. Our site was located at the Rive Gauche in Paris, France. When most look at the site plan they automatically notice how one street ultimately splits into two. Through our concept of “couplage” we redirected the focus to where the coming together of two streets would be the focus. We created a linkage of time and place by intertwining two separate systems: transportation and leisure.

When two independent beings come together they become stronger. This is manifested in the human body where each system serves a different function to create a whole. In the same way, the premise of this project is to couple two

While studying the aspects of architecture within the urban environment the importance of parking became a key factor. In architecture we tend to design for the person rather than the automobile. This idea of fusion helps to create an experience for human and automobile alike. Upon visiting Austin, the eclectic nature of the city reminded me of a explosion, a mash up of different styles of architecture. Keeping with the theme that the spirit of Austin exuberates the form and circulation of the parking garage reveals the clarity amongst the chaos.

Fusion: park. shop. live

park

Parking is the main program of the building. As a part of the program requirements at lest 75% of the building had to that of a parking garage. The idea was to take the parking garage, the part of many buildings that becomes an after thought and make it the forerunner. In doing so we created not only a parking garage but a parking experience.

shop

The challenge was to make the retail space prominent on such a busy street without taking away from the main program, parking. Seeing as though the parking garage is about the car I decide to incorporate that into the retail aspect as well through a car showcasing area. When I began to investigate Retail Storefronts I had to be extremely careful because my skin was already overpowering. I had to create a way in which the retail spaces could stand out but still blend in at the same time. By keeping the colored glass of the above levels and making them more uniform as opposed to the chaotic overlapping it already started to create a different atmosphere.

Residential space is the third program of the space. The parking had to be integrated into the residential and each program flow into each other. AS we investigated both luxury and middle-class residential areas of Austin we used this information to drive the direction of the “live side of the project. Through the interiors of the residential areas, I wanted to achieve a subtle version of all the different colors going on the outside of the building. Seeing that the residential area is the toned down section of the overall building, by creating colorful interiors a type of inverted harmony is created.

Architecture is the creation and manifestation of space. To achieve the otherwise overlooked architecture of the parking garage I took the problems faced with the typical parking garage i.e. lack of light, inability to remember where the car is parked and no human circulation. I celebrated this explosion of color and styles.

Buildings and vehicles must both express emotion as well as utility.

The Tree of Knowledge

Redesign of the University of Chicago Regenstein Library Extension

Revit Model

Rendered in 3DS Max & Photoshop

In the preliminary investigation, research was conducted to grasp the overall purpose of a library and how it can be used as a mechanism to create an environment that appeals to the general public. Through the in-depth research it narrowed down library intent to different types of perceived meaning of reading and the numerous ways in which we learn: one way is through the reading experience, or knowledge and even reason. Exploring crossculturally, the NEA ONNIM NO SUA A, OHU is a symbol of knowledge, life-long education and continued quest for knowledge. The symbol was the basis of form space and ordering of the building ultimately creating a way in which a vast ways of studying styles began to intertwine and eventually blur into each other.

Reading Experience, being the most predominant of the learning styles, was the basis of the central reading spaces. The concept of reading under a tree became the influence for façade and structure. The central building becomes a social hub and its structural ‘branches’ support individual reading nooks. By creating individual reading nooks and individual reading spaces it lead to a grand reading space that incorporates both the community of a library as well as the privacy of your favorite reading space

The Tree of Knowledge creates an oasis that heightens the ultimate learning experience in which a variety of studying styles can come and be comfortable.

Everyone loves the idea of curling up with a book under a shady tree. Fully grown trees and trees usually in full bloom inspire us to relax and commune with nature. The purpose of the built-in reading nooks is no different. The “branches” of this tree is a combination of structural elements and lounge chair design that provides a comfortable, cozy and visually secluded place to wrap yourself in your favorite volume. The smart glass technology helps to turn the nooks from semi-public to semi-private spaces with just the touch of a button. Each nook is different to provide a type of individualized reading spaces and the fit each person’s comfort level. The recline of the lounge chair design ranges to provide optimum comfort to different people.

DURBAN: Urban Revitilization

N

GRADUATE STUDIO I Urban Design Collaborative Studio with Gordon Amidon

Our concept is to create a place where the sacred and profane are combined and the ritual is recognized. The rigorous, colorful and noisy city of Durban captures the spirit of the people and is a nucleus of activity and movement for hundreds of thousands of people every day. By creating a number of open, green spaces we are appealing to the number one industry, tourism, while creating an inviting and social environment for the Durban locals. This dynamic trade and transport hub in the heart of Durban’s inner city will overall create a place where the people of Durban can have a sense of pride. The market district creates a magnetic attraction the city’s center where tourists will gravitate. Overall creating a sense of identity for the people of Durban.

This table consist of two end tables that come together to make a coffee table. It was derived from the concept of a puzzle. This modular piece should resemble a puzzle game with the various parts and pieces that are waiting to be assembled. As the pieces are assembled it creates one beautiful piece of artwork. In this case the modular component does not only stop at the kit of parts but the assembled table becomes a part of something bigger. Along with the versatility in function the design also provides versatility in materials. The two tables have various configuration and are

held together by a hidden locking mechanism. In the first Furniture class I took, the objective was to create a table that had to be at least 24â€? all around using mortise and tenons connections. The table consisted of 12 legs and 14 aprons which resulted in a total of 58 mortises being cut. In my second furniture class we had to take a product that we had previously built and model in 3d electronically. I used Dassault Systèmes Solidworks for the creating the parts and assemblies and Keyshot for rendering.

The idea of the lamp was derived from a doodle. Some of ourgreatest moments are created from things we think the leastabout. Doodles are puzzling because they are often enigmatic, full of bizarre images or seem to make no sense, rather like dreams. And just as a doodle, the functionality of my lamp is forever changing. The interior part that connects the lampshade to the lamp is strategically placed in the middle to allow versatility. The lamp canbe added to a base freestanding. Also, in keeping with the meaning, each side of the lamp is different.
