CHAIRMAN’S WELCOMING ADDRESS: A common Destiny

A word from ZIFF

Welcome to the 17th Edition of ZIFF the Festival of the Dhow Countries.

Mahmoud T. Kombo Chairman

And therefore this year, when we foreground our diversity it is only to underline our commonality. Human rights actually mean respect for individuality which is critical to social cohesion. When we talk of freedom of expression we actually also recognize the ethical requirements of communication within any given community. Just like the individual smoker has slowly learnt how much they influence the health of others, we have come to realize that the enjoyment of any human right is premised on the capacity for one to affect the processes that affect their life, that of their family, their culture and their community. A film festival of necessity foregrounds the promotion and legitimizing of diversity. The festival event is a distinctive spacial occasion but one that also help define similarities. Therefore festivals play similar roles just as they work to define their uniqueness. The variety and diversity of films we watch reflect this idealism. Through films festivals project the memories and experiences of people in their glaring diversity, as they reflect difference and inequality. Inequality when we realize how many people never have access to the beautiful experience of cinema for many reasons. They miss out from an event where people can explore new ideas and challenge the old and where a common destiny is reflected in the films that show us the weakness of desire, the necessity of work and the tears of loss .We welcomeyou to enjoy the 17th festival of Dhow Culture.

Vice Chairman Issa Mlingoti

This year’s Festival Theme “A Common Destiny” is both simple as well as complex. It has a familiar ring as destiny denotes inevitability as well as the power to predetermine events. What filmmakers won’t tell you is that their films have pre-determination locked into the structures of their stories. It is those resolutions that make audiences sit through hours of predetermined destinies that film characters go through. The destiny of a person, the happiness of love, the inevitability of doubt, the uncertainty of marriage or the patience of secrets are all common destinies that we humans recognize. In the same way we recognize how in our individuality is also the basis of our sense of community, bound in some way by a common bond, while also valuing the differences that identify us. The respect we have for the cultural differences of diverse populations denotes acknowledgement of a shared sense of the need for each other.

CEO’s GREETINGS Dear Friends, A few years ago ZIFF stood at a precipice and I contemplated what the future had for this organization. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man in this community. I have been in in this job for seven years and I have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from everyone of you. When we look at an aging person with wisdom and dignity and the pride of the years they have had on this earth, smiling until all the missing teeth can be seen, drooling with happiness at his or her grandchildren carousing in happiness, which of you wouldn’t wish to associate with them for even one minute?Such is the nature of destiny. The people we meet, the times we spend and even the pain we feel all reflect the nature of destiny. All the frustrations we feel quickly pale away when we receive a gift, a trophy, a memorable item that marks a moment in our life- our destiny. But so too are those moments of Prof. Martin Mhando crisis- when a country, a people, a land in trouble feels inconsolable when freedom is usurped, trust is CEO/Festival Director abused and power is not shared. It is the same sense of destiny that engulfs us as citizens, when we are forced to take sides or vote and get paid short thrift as our recompense for our expressions of democracy. Such surrender makes cowards of us all when we know we could have done better. Is it destiny that drives a cockerel to crow even when it could be their last day? Is it destiny when we go to war unsure whether we all shall return whether are there winner & loser in war? Is it destinywhenprisonersreturnaspresidentsortheoncereviledarerevealedasmartyrs?Whenyourenemybecomesafriend, whensacrificeisthebestformof reward, whenthehumbleroneisthegreatertheybecome, whenhumilityisthemostvaluableethos, ourdestinyiscouchednotinabsolutesbutinuncertainty. Questioning then becomes the highest form of knowledge. Our common destiny is our purpose in life, it’s the future we cultivate, the vocation we treasure, the luck we find and the unity we share. And in films we find all this, stories that enthrall us,excite us,anger us, agonize us, bring us to ecstasy, torment and distress us- they are amongst the best ways to describe our shared histories. It is films that also describe our common destiny. Let’s find it at ZIFF 2014. And for me however hard it has been it’s been my destiny to be at ZIFF.

7

ZIFF’S Theme

A COMMON DESTINY 2014 ZIFF’s theme in 2014 is A Common Destiny, which is most appropriate because we often draw strength from the experiences of others, reinforcing our awareness of the shared histories of communities, nations, continents, cultures and the planet. Indeed the common destiny of humanity includes the attributes and bonds of affection found in each one of us. As we watch the films, listen to the stories or hear the gasp or chuckle in the audience we share in that moment a common experience that only movies provide us. As filmmakers, artists, musician, animators, families, communities and cultures come together during ZIFF we find amongst us common destinies reflected in our languages, histories and cross border affinities that define our diversity and Our Common Destiny! We at ZIFF further commit ourselves to improving international relations acknowledging the arts as organs of world diplomacy, aimed at presenting the unfolding narrative of humanity as a reminder of A Common Destiny.

Anne Lise Andreasen To be an ambassador of ZIFF is an honour, a lot of joy – and work. I have been part of the festival since the foundation and first preparations in 1997. Later I have been involved as an advisor and a jury member several times, created a partnership relation to Salaam Film and Dialogue (Denmark) and - in co-operation with the Danish Film Institute - built up the Children Film Panorama – a section targeted towards children and youth. One of the moments of zen was to make a Kiswahili version of the animated feature, Kirikou, supported by the director Michel Ocelot and his production company. In my work for ZIFF I have been drawing on my experince as: - Buyer of films and television programmes for children and youth for Danish Broadcasting Corporation. - Founder of a DANIDA program (1987- 1997) for FESPACO (Burkina Faso) on marketing of African films. - Festival Director and board member for Fredrikstad Animation Ferstival (Norway). - Co-founder,co-ordinator,programmer,board member, develloper of Salaam Film and Dialogue (Denmark).Curator of MultiCool Nord,a Nordic project in co-operation with film festivals in Norway and Sweden. SPECIAL EVENTS

DIFFICULT DIALOGUES: LAND AND THE ENVIRONMENT. 18st June, 19:20-20:00 venue:Ampphitheatre,Old Fort The magnitude of the threat posed by climate change and the environment in Africa could be even more damaging if not curtailed in time. Indeed developing countries have even greater propensity to underestimating the impacts of climate change. Against the backdrop of many stories of such impacts taking place in the world through films and TV programs it is clear that the mass media have the ability to create awareness of such issues in the country. In other words, mass media strategies can be used to set agendas, bridge the gap in knowledge between people, and remind people about issues of climate change and their health and economy. Tanzania, like many other African countries faces many environmental issues. These are mostly due to urbanisation as well as due to globalisation and efforts at keeping up with the developed world. This has sometimes led to severe environmental damage. However communities in Tanzania also face poor policies and land management regulations which have led to conflict of land grabbing, land misuse and displacement of communities from their traditional lands. With the gas and oil “fever” in Tanzania, and Zanzibar in particular, we believe this is an opportunity for the community to be made aware of the diversity of opinions around the issue of land and the environment.

The Madiba Legacy: The Struggle Continues beyond long walk to freedom 20st June, 14:00-18:00 This year we want to remember Madiba through a number of events at ZIFF including Opening the festival with the film Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom and also undertake a Public Forum on his legacy The Madiba Legacy: The Struggle Continues. Danny Schechter argues that, “…what we do know, though, is that the ANC, when it came to power, was more preoccupied with political change than with economic change. And I think the problems that we’re facing in South Africa today and in many other countries are because movements for change don’t focus on economics. They mostly focus on politics.”As an addendum to the Mandela Legacy debate on Sunday 15th June we shall show films including on Sobukwe (Sobukwe:AGreat Soul), Samora Machel (Camerade President) as well as on Albie Sacks(The Soft Vengeance of Albie Sachs) and the beautiful We Never Give up II. Bongo Movies is often described as “the Tanzanian answer to Nollywood”. Having emerged from the growth of Bongo Fleva music which has travelled across the East

Africa region, Bongo Movies Swahili base also gives the industry its basic market. These low budget films produced on shirt production cycles are targeted explicitly at local Tanzanian and/or Swahili-speaking audiences, complete with its own Star system. “Topics include, but are not limited to, the negotiation between traditional customs and modern life and interests, rural versus urban realities, materialism versus the care for family and community, Christianity and miracles, local myths and spiritual traditions.” At ZIFF 2014 we celebrate this cultural and economic phenomenon with a selection of 18 specifically nominated films vying for the 6 ZUKU Swahili Awards.

CRITICAL JOURNALISM WORKSHOPS AT ZIFF 2014 COLLABORATION WITH TANZANIA MEDIA FUND (TMF)

Workshops, Forum, Exhibitions & Conferences

15th -18th June 2014 :09:30 -17:30 Double Tree by Hitlon ,stone Twon -Bahari Hall The Zanzibar International Film Festival in Collaboration with The Tanzania Media Fund will organize a 4-day, in-service training program for 10 Tanzanian Journalists with a minimum of threetwo years’ experience in analysis, investigative reporting, political and culture criticism. The workshop aims at bringing together practicing media journalists around issues of common interest in advancing critical and investigative journalism. It will provide an opportunity for a critical and constructive analysis of the use of social media (Blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook) to reach new audiences, establish beneficial conversations with end users, strengthen brand identity, establish thought leadership, and drive web traffic and building communities. During our last training workshops amongst some of the key comments was the desire by the participants to get time to practice their newly learnt skills within the festival environment. This time around we invite 10 journalists to ZIFF and provide them with a critical, analytical and cultural context for them to practise a range of multimedia journalism within the creative media industries available during ZIFF. This would give them the opportunity to acquire and develop key journalistic skills(writing, research, multimedia production). The journalists will put those skills into practice in two core modules: Professional Practice and in a Major Project where they will be required to submit their work for either a multimedia production, feature writing portfolio, investigative journalism package or video news/audio production.

STORYTELLING AND FILM SCRIPT WRITING

19th -21th June 2014 :09:30 -17:30 Double Tree by Hitlon ,stone Twon -Bahari Hall Storytelling is a very creative endeavour. From childhood we find fun in playing and in that way develop ways in telling stories. As we grow we learn even to tell lies and those are also stories we learn to develop. When we tell stories in film we however have a different focus- we focus on the audience, the timespan we have and the other elements that support storytelling like dialogue, performance, sound and visual design. How we bring ourselves to the story, through that which inspired our creativity is also a measure of how we tell our stories. Filmmakers from East Africa (3 from each country- Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania) will attend the workshop to be held between 18-21 June, This workshop will help the participants to discuss and develop their ideas, turn them into compelling stories in the genre of their choice or that which the trainers might suggest. The workshop will follow the following structure: • Breaking down the Story: Small group sessions with the Trainers focusing on breaking the story of several projects– Day 1 • One-on-one sessions with Creative Advisors, providing focused feedback on pilot scripts and season one story arcs – Day 2 • Presentations/Conversations: Pitching, followed by small group feedback sessions –Day 3 Time-Off discussions with the trainers might also look into the Business of Developing film scripts The workshop is funded by the East African community in collaboration with the GIZ. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a German federal enterprise with worldwide operations. GIZ cooperates with the Secretariat of the East African Community to strengthen public relations through improved EAC branding and training measures for East African journalists and film makers on the EAC integration process. In cooperation with EAC and the East African Film Network (EAFN), GIZ supports film trainings and awards for East African films on regional integration at ZIFF 2014. Trance and rhythmsPremiering at Marseille-Provence Culture European Capital 2013 installation – performance at the Villa Méditerranée on October 12thand13th 2013, at 8.30 p.m. With this creation on 3 screens, Christine Coulange achieves a long-term multimedia work : 5 years of travel, sound recording, sound and images composition while following musicians, rites and ceremonies in the deserts and the villages, in the islands and the cities all along this big geographic arc which joins up the Mediteranean sea and the Indian Ocean. It is long journey across the Spice Road, a wide crossing full of sonorous images, rhythms from Egypt to Laos and Malaysia, through Tanzania, Kenya, the Comoros and Zanzibar. We follow the vital lead of rituals, rare and powerful, overwhelming landscapes, every day’s life details... Awadi, Who won RFI’s “Musiques du Monde” award in 2004, has established himself as a veritable pioneer, pushing back borders and opening new paths for a sound which has, in recent years, been adopted as the music of an entire generation of African youth and their counterparts across the world.Working as part of the group, Positive Black Soul, Awadi has recorded a stack of acclaimed and accomplished albums, open to influences from Europe and the United States. Raising public awareness in underprivileged areas: The festival targets audiences in areas that are geographically and/ or socially underprivileged. Education and raising awareness among culture professionals: Culture professionals working within East Africa are to be made aware of issues in disseminating films and the activities of ZIFF in providing a structure they can use to lobby public authorities.

In 2014 ZIFF proposes a collaborative project covering a number of aspects/ projects.

SODIQ

THE KINGDOM WITHIN

Sodiq dreamt of going to University and becoming a doctor in 2008. Fast-forward five years he is on trial for murder. Director Adeyemi having a unique bond with Sodiq set up a football team on their council estate together, and made a film in 2008 celebrating Sodiq’s dream of becoming a doctor, stating at the time, he didn’t want to end up in jail.

The film began as a response to a couple of evangelical Christian pastors referring to yoga as ‘demonic’ and ‘against Christianity’. While not all Christians have these sentiments, there are many Christians that are conflicted about their yoga practice. The central premise of this film is based on a yogic interpretation of a famous Bible verse: that the Kingdom of Heaven cannot be observed, for it is within you (Luke 17:21). As a compilation of interviews from yogis, Christians, and scholars comparing these ancient spiritual systems, director Bob Peck uses this documentary to examine why or how they might have a compatible application with one another. But if you come closer and the B- and C-category stars begin to twinkle, each of them shining forth as part of a constellation, the world will open up wide and art will be enriched. AL TANNOURA TROUP FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE

Al Tannoura Troup is one of the Egyptian folk troupes, established by the General Organization responsible for Cultural Palaces in the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. The group is based in the the old Fatmide capital Cairo, specifically at wekalet al ghoury . The Troup was first established in 1988 at the Ghury Palace, which specializes in the revival and renovation of the inherited artistic and cultural themes that were about to be forgotten. The al-Tannoura Troup, which performs twice a week (on SAT.,MON., WED.) all year- round in Cairo, has also been taking part in all the national festivals. It has also been to Japan, Italy, France, USA, Austria, Hungary, Kenya, Greece, Singapore, Romania, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, UK, India, Holland, Australia, Finland, Czech, Canada, Venezuela, Portugal, Swiss, China, South Korea, North Korea, Hong Kong, Germany, Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Jordan, Morocco, U.A.E, Qatar , Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Lybia . Popular and folk musical instruments usually accompany the troup’s performance such as Rababa, Salamia, flute, drums, tambourines and sanjes ). These instruments accelerate the dancers’ beat and the colorful dresses enlighten the the stage atmosphere during the performance. A folk singer recites religious verses (Inshad Deni) and songs in praise of the Prophet (PBUH) Mohammed. The senior dancer, known as the ‘Lafife’ or the one who goes round in infinite circles, and the junior dancers the ‘Hanatia’ all dance to the rhythmic beat of the Tambourines. These dancers are not professionally trained but have rather inherited this art spontaneously from their forefathers.

The Dhow Countries Music Academy Zanzibar (DCMA)

A non-profit, educational and cultural organization registered in March 2001.The DCMA opened Zanzibar’s first professional music school in September 2002 providing music lessons as well as instruments at minimal cost to anyone interested in studying music related to their cultural background or wanting to acquire mastery of an instrument. Special emphasis has been placed on teaching traditional musical instruments and styles such as Taarab, Beni, Kidumbak, traditional Ngo’ma, and dancing such as Msewe, Bomu, Kiluwa, Kyaso etc. from the region of Unguja and Pemba. The DCMA is proud to be the guardians of a living cultural heritage and proud to preserve and promote the musical heritage of Zanzibar and the Dhow Countries. In training the students it ensures the continuation, knowledge, and legacy of a unique musical cultural heritage. The school provides a unique opportunity for the inhabitants of Zanzibar and the Dhow Regions to study music both related to their cultural background and more global genres of music. Whilst it’s main mission is to provide music for education, employment and enjoyment, special emphasis is placed on broadening the educational opportunity for young people, children and women. In addition the DCMA is currently seeking accreditation to become the main teaching centre for teaching music in East and Central Africa. Whilst the central aim of DCMA is to preserve and promote the musical heritage of Zanzibar and the Dhow regions in more recent years it has introduced global musical genres in both education and performance. With this intermingling of instruments and styles the DCMAhas a variety of diverse bands and musicians who play not only Taarab but Afro- Arab fusion, Jazz, Reggae, Hip Hop and more. In addition special workshops, seminars, concerts, exchange visits and networking activities take place throughout the year and the DCMA has developed into a vibrant national and international musical and cultural meeting point. This year’s collaboration with the ZIFF festival programme and the Siti Bin Saadi Foundation programme is a delight and an honour since Siti is extremely dear to the heart of the DCMA. Siti Bin Saadi is affectionately known as the ‘mother of Taarab’ as she revolutionised the genre from a male dominated, elitist musical tradition to popularise the Zanzibar traditional music by not only singing “Taarab” but also writing songs which reflected the poverty, life and loves of ordinary people in Zanzibar. Her legacy and work is extremely important to the DCMA syllabus and curriculum of Taarab music. Her work gives a picture of what traditional Taarab used to be like through her compositions, lyrics, musical modes and scales (maqamat), and performance. A DCMA performance always includes at least one of Siti’s compositions and a rendition of her work always inspires love and veneration in both audiences who are familiar with her history and her work as well as new comers to her songs. The DCMA’s doors are open to all visitors and you are welcome to visit during week days at its home in the Old Customs House. Artists and musicians also perform in venues around Stone Town, the Zanzibar islands, Tanzania mainland and abroad so please look out for concerts and performances – you will be delighted with the excellence of musical and artistic performance. IN MEMORIUM

Born 04/04/1988 Died 27/05/2014

14/05/1949- 30/ 05/2014 On 30th May ZIFF lost one of our most loved leaders and member of the ZIFF family. Emerson Skeens left us after a long bout with cancer. Emerson, the man, Emerson the patron of the arts and Emerson the cultural stalwart will be hugely missed in Zanzibar, the Island he so loved. As a ZIFF funding Chair Emerson knew how ZIFF could be integral to Zanzibar’s economy as a linchpin of tourism but more important to him ZIFF was a cultural tool for the fight for egalitarianism, liberalism, freedom and peace in Zanzibar. As he moves on to a restful place Emerson leaves footprints brightly shining in the darkness we face today.

Rest in Peace ndugu yetu Emerson Skeens. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un

A COMMON DESTINY EVEN IN DEATH

This year we again mourn the loss of some defining artists of our industry in Tanzania. In life all artists work to be able to earn a living, but more often than not they do that without attracting attention. And even when the attention that is paid on the artists for a work well done might affect them adversely, one thing they are certain of is that they all found pleasure in the work. The pleasure of work is what differentiates most labour from the production of art. There are no my st er ies in defining art as work. It is pure joy to those who produce it and those who hungrily consume it. Artists, to quote an unknown philosopher, find joy in the happiness of others. But then as mortal as any human being artists fall prey to the most natural calls of nature; and however far seeing they maybe in their artistic approaches when they leave us for the distant boundary “where no traveler returns” we know seeing far is one thing and going there is another. As the saying goes “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”These peoples’ lives have actually done things we always remember, and want not to forget, because they have disturbed our lives in some way. They disturb the harmony of our individual lives to harken the joy of a shared journey as living beings. We remember them as rare birds of fancy, inspirational figures who were obsessed with the belief that what they saw others do was not enough and they had to do better.Death is a common destiny, as death, like destiny denotes inevitability as well as the power to predetermine events. What life then means is to be able to leave it knowing one has impacted positively on those they have shared it with. This is the legacy of our friends whose passing commemorate here. May their Souls Rest in Peace.
