Chromic determination The chromium salts are the tanning agent mostly used in leather tanning process due to the properties that conferee to the final product. The use of chromium salts, as a tanning agent gives a softer, flexible, with higher physical resistance and stability. The chromium normally present in the leather is Cr (III), however by external conditions, sunlight and humidity the Cr (III) could oxidise to Cr (VI).
