Four times since 1996, a former Catamount was a member of the NFL world champion team. In 2006, WILLIE WILLIAMS was a member of the world-champion Pittsburgh Steelers. DAVID PATTEN and the New England Patriots won Super Bowl XXIX in 2005. The previous year, Super Bowl XXVIII was a win-win situation for all Western Carolina fans as both New England and the Carolina Panthers had former Catamounts on their teams. PATTEN’s Patriots edged the Panthers, featuring BRAD HOOVER.

In 2002, PATTEN scored New England’s lone offensive touchdown — an eight-yard grab — as the Patriots upset the St. Louis Rams, 20-17, in the Super Bowl. Two years later, on the road to the 2004 Super Bowl, starting fullback HOOVER scored a fourth-quarter TD in the Panthers 29-23 playoff win over St. Louis.
