CULLOWHEE N.C. -- Sophomore Emily Clarke scored 19 points and Brooke Johnson recorded her first double-double of the season to push Western Carolina women’s basketball to the .500 mark, 6-6, and close out 2008 with a victory, defeating UNC Wilmington (6-4) 73-63 Tuesday in the Ramsey Center. Clarke was on fire in the first half completing the first 20 minutes of the game with 13 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and also 3-for-3 from behind the three point line. She carried over her perfection to start the second half, hitting a threepointer to start the second 20 minutes, going 6-for-6 before missing a three-pointer from the left side. Clarke ended the game 6-of-7 from the field, 4-of-5 from the threepoint mark and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Johnson, as stated above, notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds; it is the fifth double-double of her career. She also had three blocks, just one shy of her season-high. She now has 20 blocks on the season and needs just 11 blocks to move into second place in the Lady Catamount record books for blocks in a career. UNC Wilmington won the rebounding battle pulling down 40 boards to Western Carolina’s 39. The Lady Catamounts made it count in the field shooting 48.2 percent and was also 11-17 from the free throw line. UNC Wilmington struggled at the free throw line, as the club who normally shoots 75 percent from the charity stripe shot just 50 percent; 15-of-30. After failing to post a double digit scorer in its last game, Western Carolina had three against UNC Wilmington. Clarke of course paced the club with 19 points and was followed by Johnson with 12. Heather Swayne rounded out the double figure scoring coming off the bench to score in double figures for the third time this season with 10 points against the Seahawks.

BOONE, N.C. -- Western Carolina freshman Kaila’Shea Menendez led all scorers with a career-high 17 points to pace Western Carolina women’s basketball to a 92-55 win at Appalachian State Saturday in the Holmes Center. The Lady Catamounts improve to 7-6 and 3-2 in Southern Conference play while the Mountaineers fall to 1-11 and 0-4 in SoCon. Western Carolina moves above .500 for the second time this season with its second Southern Conference road win of the year. It is also the third time this season the Lady Catamounts have won two consecutive games. Appalachian State scored the first bucket of the game for an early 2-0 lead - the Mountaineers only lead of the game. Seniors Lauren Powell and Brooke Johnson quickly answered as Powell hit a jumper and Johnson connected on a three-pointer for the first five points of the game. Western Carolina would never trail in the game again. The only Lady Catamount miscue in the first half was shooting just 5-of-14 from the free throw line. The club did bounce back at the charity strip in the second half, missing just three free throws 15-of-18, to end the game 20-of-32. Western Carolina shot a scorching 50 percent from the field in the first half, which afforded the Lady Catamount youngsters to see quality playing time. The starting lineup for WCU played at most 16 minutes in the game allowing Western Carolina’s youth to show their talents on the court. The 19 point lead at the half, 44-25, was the largest of the season for the Lady Catamounts this season. Western Carolina’s 92 points against Appalachian State was the most by the team this season as well. The 37-point margin of victory is also the largest of the year. Western Carolina ended the game shooting 47.8 percent from the field and scored 30 of its points off Mountaineer turnovers. The Lady Catamounts also got 54 of its 92 points from their bench.
