Welcome Greetings! As you know, in celebration of our 100th anniversary, Girls Scouts has proclaimed 2012 as the Year of the Girl. As we begin our next century, we see this important milestone as a prime opportunity to focus on encouraging girls and helping them develop their extraordinary leadership potential. Each year nearly 7,000 volunteers throughout our 64-county service area mentor and work with girls to help them develop into young leaders with bright futures. Our volunteers are the very heart of Girl Scouting, and the driving force of our Girl Scout Leadership Experience programming. The proof of what Girl Scouting can do for girls is seen in the outcomes of a recent national Girl Scout alumnae study commissioned by GS USA. This research found that girls who take part in Girl Scouting go to college more than non-Girl Scouts. They ultimately earn more money, vote more often, and are also more involved with their communities. What’s even more compelling is that, for every measure of success the study evaluated, the numbers went totally off the chart among those who had stayed in Girl Scouting for at least three years. Together, we have a great success story to share about the impact and value of Girl Scouting. As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, there is no better time to share this story with those in our communities, schools, workplaces, and statehouses. The Year of the Girl is an ideal time to put girl leadership front and center as an issue that demands action. This is a time to call on organizations committed to the education and well-being of girls to create and administer programs that provide girls with leadership opportunities. It is a time to raise public awareness about the importance of instilling confidence in girls. It is a time to call on individuals, corporations and others to fund initiatives that address girls’ needs—to invest in our girls! We know that when girls succeed, society succeeds. We know, too, that at a time when our society faces significant challenges that call for teamwork and innovative solutions, we cannot afford to devalue or discount half our leadership talent pool. If women continue to gain leadership roles at the same rate they have since winning the right to vote in 1920, they can be expected to catch up to men sometime in the 23rd century. Do we really want to tell today’s girls they will need to wait until the era in which Star Trek is set to reach their full leadership potential? We recognize that one girl can make a difference, and girls together can change the world. Imagine what an entire generation of girls will do, given the confidence, the skills and the experience they need to lead. Thank you for your time and devotion to Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Thank you for helping build girls of courage, confidence and character who make our world a better place. All my best, Lora Tucker Chief Executive Officer

2012-2013 Product Program Much more than a way to raise money, the Fall Product and Cookie Programs are hands-on leadership and entrepreneurial programs. Here are a few examples of how participating in the Cookie Program teaches Girl Scouts skills that will help them grow into leaders in their own lives, leaders in business and leaders in the world: 1. Goal Setting Your Girl Scout sets Fall Product and Cookie sales goals individually and with her team, creates a plan to reach them, and develops cooperation and team building skills all along the way! 2. Decision-Making Your Girl Scout helps decide how her team will spend their Fall Product and Cookie money, furthering her critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help her in many aspects of her life. 3. Money Management Your Girl Scout takes Fall Product and Cookie orders, handles customers’ money and gains valuable and practical life skills around financial literacy. 4. People Skills Your Girl Scout learns how to talk to, listen to and work with all kinds of people while selling Fall Product and Cookies. These experiences help her develop healthy relationship and conflict resolution skills she can use throughout her life. 5. Business Ethics Your Girl Scout is honest and responsible at every step of the Girl Scout Fall Product and Cookie Program. Her business ethics here reinforce the positive values she is developing as a Girl Scout. IMPORTANT DATES: The Fall Product Program begins October 1st. The Cookie Program begins January 1st.

Bronze Award Welcome to the Girl Scout Bronze Award, a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference. Bronze Award Requirements: Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Bronze Award starts with completing one Girl Scout Junior Journey. Each Journey you complete gives you the skills you need to plan and implement your Take Action project. When you go for the Bronze Award, you represent what Girl Scouts can achieve in their communities. And, of course, you want to do that in a way that’s fun for you—and for everyone else involved, too! Earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award involves completing a Journey, and then a suggested minimum of 20 hours building your team, exploring your community, choosing your project, planning it, putting your plan in motion, and spreading the word about your project. The suggested hours help you think about your commitment to doing your very best with each step. That’s different for every Girl Scout, so these hours aren’t a rule, just a friendly reminder. You’re a Girl Scout, which means you will earn your award with courage, confidence, and character and make a difference in the world around you! For more information on the Bronze Award, please refer to the Junior Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting or Resource Sheets 28 & 29. Please note: Bronze Awards are approved by your Bronze Award Advisor or troop leader. You are not required to submit paperwork to the council office. Bernheim Forest Girl Scout Discovery Days at Wilson Creek Ages: Brownies, Juniors Max 25 Outcome(s): Discover 1,2,3, Connect 5, Take Action 5

The Stream Ecology and Restoration at Wilson Creek Program provides Girl Scouts the unique opportunity for hands-on study of stream ecology and restoration. Located deep in the natural areas of Bernheim Forest, Wilson Creek was straightened by humans sometime during the last 200 years to allow for more farmland. A decade ago, the stream was restored to its natural meandering channel and has since provided an experimental model for scientists to monitor and discover how to better protect our valuable water resources. In addition to exploring the history and ecology specific to Wilson Creek, scouts will also be provided with a historic overview of Kentucky’s water resources and will learn which factors contribute to the health of a stream habitat. Hands-on activities include stream channel comparisons, creek wading, fossil hunting, plant identification, and wildlife study, including the catching and release of aquatic species. Participants will likely get wet and should dress accordingly: sturdy shoes that attach to the feet are required (tennis shoes, sandals with straps, rain boots, etc.). A change of clothes is also recommended. Journey Program Boxes Journey Program Boxes are available at your local Program & Learning Center to check out for a limited time; the due date is noted on each box. To reserve a journey box contact your local PLC. A replacement fee of $30.00 will be charged per day if the box is not returned by the due date. Journeys are the main Girl Scout resource. They are easy to use, include great activities and are fully customizable to fit your girls interests and needs. The Girls Guide to Girl Scouting complements the Journeys and adds additional fun to the program. The first half of the adult guide includes general Girl Scout and Journey topic information. The actual Journey activities start half way through the book (around page 20) with the sample sessions. This is where the fun begins! The girl book from the Journey is just that for the girls. It is very important to remember that the girl book does not always follow the Adult How to Guide. The actual Journey program is all in the adult guide. There are activities in the Adult How to Guide that sometimes focuses on certain pages of the girl book but the two books do not follow each other page by page. The girl book is designed for the girls to take home, read through, do the individual activities, etc. They should bring the book to meetings in case the meeting activities do focus on any of the group activities in the girl book.

It’s Your World - Change It! Agent of Change In this journey, there’s a whole spiral of it waiting for Girl Scout Juniors. The journey is filled with ceremonies and circles, real life heroines, and special new characters, including the fashion savvy spider named Dez.
