Restore: Greenville Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital Positioned on a heavily wooded site on the Prisma Health Campus in Greenville, SC, this proposed rehabilitation hospital integrates itself into its site while also integrating nature onto its facades.

Serving the upstate region of South Carolina, this facility is designed to help transition traumatic brain and spinal cord injury patients from an inpatient hospital setting back to everyday life. Outpatient and inpatient services are co-located within this 40 bed hospital.

Mobility, motor, hearing, and sight issues are just some of the struggles patients may face while recovering in such a setting. This universal patient room was designed to be a highly adaptable space that could serve all long or short term rehabilitation patients.

A Place of My Own: Aging in Place Overlooking Cheat Lake outside of Morgantown, West Virginia, this home was designed to allow occupants to age in place. This two story home features a main living area for the primary occupants along with a basement apartment unit. Over time, the basement space could be used to serve as a caretaker’s suite. To help occupants as their abilities may change, this home was designed to have an open floor plan layout with minimal barriers between rooms and from interior to outdoor living spaces.

On the ground level, the home can be accessed from the front entry or from the garage. From the vestibule space, the kitchen, dining, and living areas can be accessed.

The bedroom and office areas are positioned towards the deck which can be accessed both from the living area and the bedroom.

Each room within the ground level is ADA accessible to allow mobility regardless of physical capabilities. Key spaces were oriented to frame the view of Cheat Lake, including the main bedroom and the living area. Within the living and dining area, pictures are positioned along the walls to aid with memory.

The basement apartment features a kitchen/dining/living area, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and storage. This level also has outdoor access and boasts a patio that faces the scenic lake view.

Hope Dental Clinic Located in the heart of Kigali, Rwanda, the Hope Dental Clinic is a unique facility with a vision to help bridge the gap between those who can and cannot afford dental care. Built on a sloped site, each of the program elements are built at differing levels including the dental clinic and school at the top, housing for missionaries, and a supply building located at the bottom off of an established road. Founded by a religious organization, the chapel was a key element on this campus.

This dental clinic was designed to provide care to clients who could afford care and the revenue generated would then fund mobile clinics that could serve needy individuals within the surrounding communities.

Urban Design: Molding a More Resilient Medical District Like many coastal cities, Charleston, South Carolina is faced with the challenge of rising sea levels, potential hurricanes, and sinking marsh-like land comprising large areas of the city. The Charleston Medical District (CMD), which consists of the Medical University of South Carolina and its hospital facilities, the Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center, and Roper Hospital, is one key area battling these challenges. The goal of this project was to address resiliency and accessibility to the CMD while also increasing vibrancy within the district.

Activated courtyard with water feature Extending the elevated walkways along Ashley River will allow for the creation of a bustling boardwalk where a variety of social and economic activities may take place.

Creating legible nodes and landmarks with unique characteristics will increase activity within the CMD, thereby leading to a healthier, active campus.

Medical University of South Carolina Hospital Phase III

As an 800,000 sq facility, the MUSC Phase III Hospital will serve as the third and final hospital addition to the Medical University of South Carolina’s campus. Designed to withstand hurricanes and floodwaters, this resilient hospital building concept is accessible regardless of inclement weather events. A pedestrian and tram bridge along Courtney Drive connects visitors and patients to the building. Bridges spanning between the Ashley River Tower and the new facility further increase the campus’s connectivity. Other goals of this hospital include increase greenspace on the MUSC campus and strengthening the tie between the campus and the community.

The site for the Phase III hospital is at the corner of Courtenay Drive and Bee Street within the MUSC Medical District. This new hospital addition will be adjacent to the MUSC Ashley River Tower (ART).

Demolition is proposed to remove the smaller existing buildings from the site across the street to accommodate an oak park along with eventual hospital expansion.

Departmental Planning: ICU + Acuity Adaptable Floor Plans To address the needs of the staff and patients in an ICU and acuity adaptable environment, a layout was chosen to give staff optimal visibility to patients while also maintaining a flexible footprint to forecast for future needs. Outboard style bathrooms were chosen to avoid blocking visibility from the corridor. By pushing them past the defined edge of the building, more space was given back to the designated family area. Studies have shown that this arrangement is preferred by hospital staff.

This was chosen over a nested layout due to increased nursing travel distances and a need for longer column spans, which were not well suited for this building footprint.

Hybrid nursing stations allow for high levels of staff supervision while also enabling greater communication at centralized nursing stations.

Departmental Planning: Acute Patient Care Floors Mimicking the layout of the ICU and acuity adaptable floors, the acute inpatient units have similarly designed spaces. The most significant difference is the lack of decentralized nurse stations located directly outside of patient rooms, which adds additional sqaure footage back to each patient room. Eight nurse substations allow staff to stay close to their patients without being situated in a privacy-invasive way.The bathrooms were kept in the outboard layout to decrease additional costs for having to move plumbing. Much of the design for the acute patient floors was driven by decisions to optimize the ICU floors. By maintaining the same layout, the building will have greater overall flexibility as utilities will be located in the same position on each floor.

Structural Analysis: Clemson University Life Sciences Building A structural analysis was conducted to better understand the construction of a typical precast concrete building. To create a BIM model, construction documents were analyzed and walkthroughs were performed. Three-dimensional details were also created to understand how to piece together building elements.

Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) A Clemson University Non-Denominational Chapel Designing a chapel welcoming to students of all beliefs was a key objective for this project. The location of this proposed chapel was on a hillside site nearby the main quad of the Clemson University campus. Privacy, convenience, and accessibility were all critical factors in this design.
