A World Cup and Thermal Million Qualifying Event

This FEI competition is ridden as Table A Mixed.

A competition against the clock with one initial course and one jump-off. Riders are limited to two(2) horses per rider. Each competitor will jump one round over a course of approximately 12 to 15 jumps at the “International� standard, set to 1.60 meters (approximately 5.25 feet). The first round and jump-off, if any, are decided by adding together the penalties incurred over the course and any penalties for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course.

Competitors with equal penalties for first place, jumpoff against the clock in a second round. The jump-off will be ridden over a shortened course and placings will be awarded in order of least penalties with the fastest times.

H

orses have been domesticated for around 5,000 years. Humans have found a variety of ways to capitalize on the horse’s many assets to achieve their goals. For centuries we have been breeding horses to become more powerful and flexible so that they can be better equipped for the kind of job it will need to perform. The body of the horse is built for work.

Its body is well balanced for hauling heavy loads because it’s heavier in the front. Horses also possess agility and a low center of gravity necessary to carry out the challenging, high speed maneuvers that are performed in battle.

Humans have helped shape horses for many jobs throughout time but the combination of horse and human has shaped the world.

War Horses

Warfare was an early use of the horse. Many civilizations Samurai, Huns, Mongols, Greeks, Romans, Europeans and Native Americans used horses in battle to dominate their enemies. For more than 3,000 years, a warrior on horseback or horse-drawn chariot tipped the balance of power in battle. There was great advantage to having horses in battle. When armies used horses as a part of their military arsenal against those without, victory almost always went to the former. When both armies used horses, victory came down to battle strategy and skill of the cavalry.

Millions of horses were still being used in battle as recently as one hundred years ago. Horses helped to execute military tactics well into the 1900s until they became ineffective compared to newer, more deadly weapons.

Mighty as they were horses were not invulnerable in battle. One well-aimed shot with a bow and arrow or later a gun began to illustrate this weakness.

With the increased accuracy and deadliness of new weapons thus began the retreat of the cavalry.

Modern developments like trench warfare, barbed wire and machine guns effectively brought such change.

There was a decline of mounted soldiers after the Second World War as the use of tanks, machine guns, and airplanes demonstrated how outmatched horses were in battle.

The use of horses shifted away from their starring role as warriors on the military stage to a supporting role behind the lines as gun and supply transportation, messengers and ambulance horses.

Work Horses

Horses have plowed land, cleared forests, and herded cattle.

Transporting heavy material or completing farm work by driving simple machines was their dominant use. The musculature found in horses is powerful and allows them to help lift water, stone, coal, and other materials. In the 1800s, horses and machines often worked beside one another. A myriad of new inventions meant more new tasks for horses, not less. In fact, horses worked at more varied jobs during the industrial era than at any other time. Horses had many jobs from putting out fires to carrying messages cross country in the Pony Express to moving vehicles of mass transit. They pulled carts, carriages, buses and barges on streets and canals. The nineteenth century was the age of industry for Europe and America. New mills and factories were producing new goods at breakneck pace. Bringing these goods to the consumers was crucial for success. Horses kept the wheels of commerce turning in our cities, countrysides, markets, warehouses and homes. While railroads and steamships allowed for expansion and growth this new world of machinery could never have prospered without the role the horse played in it.

Play Horses

Today horses and humans take pleasure from modern horse sports such as polo, eventing, dressage, driving, show jumping and vaulting. All of these sports attract thousands of spectators every year to witness the athleticism, grace and competitiveness of humans and horses working together. This September in Normandy, France the World Equestrian Games showcased the best in each of these equestrian sports and a few lesser-known ones too. An event that only convenes once every four years it brought the world of equestrian sport together for some of the most challenging competition to be found anywhere in the world.
