Successful beyond their wildest dreams, the iconic comedy duo Cheech & Chong defined an era with their hilariously irreverent, satirical, counterculture, no-holds-barred comedy routines. A guy at the bar says “Marilyn Monroe,” and I get a picture in my head of a blonde. And not just any blonde, but a blonde angel, standing over a sidewalk grate, air blowing the skirt of her dress up to her thighs, stopped only from reaching her head by the hands she holds at her sides. On the other hand, you say Babe Ruth and I see a spindly-legged guy swinging a baseball bat and running the bases with his distinctive stride. Then someone will ask me if I have a dog at home and—bingo!— a pair of little furry ones dance across my photo memory bank. It works that way every time: say something to me and words become flashcards. Lots of people play parts in the stage that comprises each of our lives. Some of them have walk-on parts—here today, gone tomorrow—while some become embedded for life, taking uppermanent residence in the marvelous theatre of our minds. That’s how it is in the casino business, too. Department managers come and go. Highly talented people are replaced by another crop of highly talented people. It’s a cycle of creativity, that never-ending search for absolute perfection. I’ll give you a pair of for instances: Phil Gonzales, marketing director at Nambe Falls. He’s a friend, a real bud. His photo will pop up inside my head at least once a day. Possessed of a photographic memory himself, he is the archetype of a competent marketing director. He carries scores of can’t-miss promotions in his mental inven-

There is no room for the Negative Nancys, the Pessimistic Petes, or the Cynical Cindys. Phil Gonzales and the others like him that I see work their magic—including Gonzales’s general manager, Pam Gallegos— are a posse of pure positive thinkers. They always win, even when they are forced to, once again, freshen up their resumes. You know what? I think there’s a movie in there somewhere.

Executive Pastry chef Charles Guiswite, alongside chefs Alan Sanchez and Anthony Chavez prepared an incredible three-foot-tall chocolate sculpture for the event. Made entirely of chocolate, the artistic piece carried a galactic theme, transporting drooling mouths on a chocolate rocket trip through outer space.
Isleta Resort & Casino is quickly becoming known as the place where chocolate dreams come true. The resort gained tremendous recognition this year when its team of talented chefs swept the competition off its cocoa-coated feet at the 24th Annual Chocolate Fantasy: Cosmic Soiree to benefit the New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation. Twenty five pounds of chocolate were used for the edible creation, which featured handpaintings and hand-sculpted embellishments. Overall, more than 200 combined hours of the chocolatiers’ personal time were devoted to making the masterpiece
come to life. Buffalo Slots Stampede into New “Grand” Version By John G. Brokopp Aristocrat Gaming’s Buffalo slot machine franchise, arguably the most popular multi-reel video game in casinos nationwide, continues to build its fanbase as each new generation of the stampeding prairie beasts is introduced. Card Counting is NOT Cheating
Dear Mark: When it comes to blackjack, why is counting cards considered a form of cheating? I look at it as someone who is very good at the game and no different from someone playing poker, like players who are very skilled at bluffing and reading the body language and facial expressions of the others at the table. —Gary When it comes to counting cards, Gary, you don’t need to be a math wiz. All card counting does is establish mathematically the degree to which the as-yetundealt deck favors the dealer, or favors the player. Counting does this by tracking the changing imbalance of big and little cards in a diminishing deck. Card counters, theoretically, have an advantage of anywhere from .5–1.5 percent over the casino. A deck rich with high cards (10, jack, queen, king, ace) favors the player, whereas, an excess of low cards (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), favors the dealer. When that ratio favors the counting player, he/she bets more money; when it favors the dealer, the counter bets less. Your assertion, Gary, that counting cards is considered a form of cheating, is erroneous in that card counting is NOT illegal under federal, state, and local laws in the United States—just so long as the player does not use any external card counting device, or persons, to assist them in counting cards. In their pursuit to identify card counters, casinos
can ban players believed to be counters—sort of. It depends on where they are playing. For instance, in Atlantic City they will let you take a whack at counting cards. But, again, sort of. The New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled that players cannot be discriminated against because of their playing skills (counting), even if detected. Instead, the casino will employ “lawful” countermeasures to hinder card counters on the Jersey Shore. These measures include using eight-deck shoes, shuffling at will to thwart bet variance, and instructing the dealers to move the cut card near the top of the shoe on suspected counters. In Nevada, before you sit down at a blackjack table, you will need to check your brain at the door. There, laws allow casinos to operate sort of like a private club, so plan on being asked to leave for using your cerebral matter.

Those who want to play this cat and mouse game to gain a 1-percent-plus advantage should expect a pit boss to come up to them and unsympathetically say, “We appreciate your business, but we are going to ask you to stop playing blackjack here. Feel free to play any of the other table games that we offer.” Translated, that means go play any other game that has a much higher house edge.
