How to Measure for Custom Cut Mats Three measurements define a mat:
Adding Additional Mats
1. window opening size 2. mat border widths (for each side) 3. total outside mat size
Choose the offset (how much of the mat beneath you want showing) for each side. The border width for the second mat, minus the offset, is the border width of the top mat. Repeat for each side.
What Size Should My Window Opening Be?
Subtract 1/4” in each dimension, from the outside edges of the art being framed, for a 1/8” overlap on each side.

How Big Should I Make My Mat?
Outside mat size is the same for all mats in multiple-mat presentations. Outside mat size is also the size of the frame you’ll need.
Mat size is a matter of personal taste; we recommend borders of at least 2 1/2” in most cases. Border widths usually increase with the size of the artwork, but wide mats also help add weight to small pieces. Making the bottom border slightly wider than the top border helps balance artwork hung at eye level.
