Mission Statement

2014-2015

cascades theatrical company

The mission of Cascades Theatrical Company is to entertain, educate, engage and enrich the community by offering high-quality theater performances and educational programs. Come create with us! About Us

CTC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1978. We are a membership organization, where all aspects of our productions, on and off stage, are created by volunteers. We offer a full season of Main Stage plays performed by the community, for the community. Main Stage productions are selected by a volunteer committee that reads dozens of plays each year with the objective of selecting a season of seven well-written and appealing shows. The goal is to present a season of balanced genres such as comedy, mystery/ thriller, holiday-themed, drama, “classic,” and musical complete with live musical accompaniment. In addition, we produce performances such as our new Black Box series, Solo Speak, Triage, our NightVisions series (which showcases local performing artists), and staged readings by local playwrights.

We provide services that support performing arts in the region and the community at large. These include: hosting the Summer Conservatory for the Bend Theatre for Young People; providing the opportunity for other community organizations to utilize the theatre; hosting and sometimes producing short-run theatrical performances by local and out-of-town artists and playwrights; lending costumes, props, and set materials to local community groups and schools; providing casting services to local producers (for example, independent films, television and radio commercials); and offering the theatre as a venue for filming. 541.389.0803 • www.cascadestheatrical.org

Message from the Board Welcome to our 36th Season! Cascades Theatre will produce seven, instead of six, Main Stage productions, including a musical! In addition, we are expanding our programming to include the Black Box series. This series is designed to provide a unique way for our theatrical community to experience and be involved in a more unconventional style of theatre. It consists of three plays with four performances each and promises to provide more theatrical opportunities for actors and patrons. Information about the Black Box series is provided in this brochure. Our Season Flex Pass is a tremendous bargain, offering seven shows for the price of six. We have kept our individual ticket price at $20 to try to make our productions affordable and accessible. Cascades Theatre has implemented a new online ticket purchasing system, which offers seating for all shows. More information is included in this brochure. The All Aspects Teen Theatre program started last season. It provides participants ages 13-18 with experiences in acting, directing, writing, designing, and other aspects of a live theatrical production. Students will incorporate these experiences in their production of William Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead: The True and Accurate Account of the 1599 Zombie Plague over Halloween weekend. We are also proud to continue our association with Bend Theatre for Young People, run by Gary Bowne, to provide similar educational experiences to children ages 8-12. In April, 2015, Cascades Theatre will hold our “Second Annual Shakespearean Scene and Monologue Festival” for Central Oregon high school students. Make this season your year to volunteer at CTC! You can assist in the front of the house on performance nights, help build and paint the sets, find costumes, or learn to run the light/sound board! Do you have a desire to act in one of our productions? Come by the theatre to check out a script, then audition! Come create with us! —CTC Board of Directors Cascades Theatrical Company is a proud member of the following:

36th Season "Brings a fresh glow to Broadway... In many respects his funniest, richest and consequently the most affecting of his plays." - New York Daily News “Simultaneously poignant and funny. The characters are fully dimensional, believable...An outstanding show... the best seen on Broadway in too long a time.” - Variety

Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

By Neil Simon Here is part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937, living with his family in a crowded, middle-class, Brooklyn home. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche and her two young daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states, “If you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.” Neil Simon is an American playwright and screenwriter who is widely regarded as one of the most successful, prolific, and performed playwrights in the world. Simon has received more Academy and Tony nominations than any other writer, as well as receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Lost in Yonkers, Emmy Awards for The Sid Caesar Show and The Phil Silvers Show, Tony Awards for The Odd Couple and Biloxi Blues, a special Tony Award for “Overall Contribution to the Theatre,” and more.

By Joseph Goodrich Paris, 1963. Director Henry Lockwood has come to the City of Lights for the premiere of his new film, Panic. Accompanied on the trip by his wife, Emma, and his secretary, Miriam, Lockwood expects nothing more than to enjoy another cinematic success and to bask in the adulation of young French film critic, Alain Duplay. But when Lockwood is accused of a hideous crime — a crime that could destroy his career and his marriage — he is forced to confront the truth about himself and those closest to him. Lockwood, known the world over as “The Sultan of Suspense,” is caught in a nightmare straight out of one of his own films. Joseph Goodrich is an alumnus of New Dramatists and an active member of Mystery Writers of America. His plays have been produced across the United States and in Australia, and are published by Samuel French, Playscripts, and Applause Books, among others. His plays include Panic (winner, 2008 Edgar Award for Best Play) and Smoke and Mirrors. His non-fiction has appeared in Mystery Scene and Crime Spree, and he is a former Calderwood Fellow at the MacDowell Colony.

36th Season “Wooten has indeed concocted a comedy that puts a great deal of delicious nonsense into Charles Dickens’ most famous story...a multitude of laughs” -The Newark Star-Ledger “A witty, timely, poignant script interspersed with upbeat Christmas carols and a timeless message of caring” – The Westfield Leader

Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

BY JOHN WOOTEN “A Christmas Carol” with a modern day twist, Humbug follows the story of Eleanor Scrooge, a ruthlessly ambitious Wall Street executive who has an aversion to Christmas and an insatiable appetite for power. Locked in her office on a snowy Christmas Eve, Eleanor is determined to finish a corporate-takeover proposal until three “advisors” provide her with an eye-opening appreciation for the holidays and the spirit of Christmas. An upbeat and moving adaptation of Dickens’ holiday classic, Humbug is one for the ages. With a contemporary flair, it is a tale the whole family will enjoy! John Wooten’s plays have been produced Off-Broadway, in London, and in regional Equity theaters across the country. Awards and nominations include: New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship; Best New Play nomination from the American Theatre Critics Association; semi-finalist for a Nicholl Fellowship, sponsored by the Academy Awards; and multiple Best New Play nominations from the Newark StarLedger. Mr. Wooten is the Producing Artistic Director of Premiere Stages and teaches Playwriting at Kean University.

By Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams is ranked as one of the great playwrights of the 20th century and The Glass Menagerie is one of the most beloved plays in American theater. It was Williams’ first major success, winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play in 1945. The Glass Menagerie has had numerous revivals on Broadway, most recently last year. The Glass Menagerie centers on its narrator, Tom Wingfield, who conjures up the family he left years earlier but whom his memory forbids him to forget. Set in the Depression Era in St. Louis, Tom’s recollection is our glimpse into the family’s reduced circumstances. His dilemma forms a central conflict of the play as he confronts the choice between responsibility to his family and desperation to live his own life and pursue his dreams. This is Williams at his best. The Glass Menagerie reveals his insights into the human heart while remaining a drama of great tenderness, charm, and beauty. Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) explored passion with daring honesty and forged a poetic theatre of raw psychological insight that shattered conventional properties and transformed the American stage. The autobiographical The Glass Menagerie brought what Mr. Williams called “the catastrophe of success” – a success capped by A Streetcar Named Desire. An extraordinary series of masterpieces followed, including Vieux Carre; Sweet Bird of Youth; The Rose Tattoo; Orpheus Descending; and the classic, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

36th Season "With the lightest of touches, Sheridan brilliantly exposes the best and worst of human nature" -The Guardian

The School for

Scandal

By Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Gossips, hypocrites, liars, and lovers populate one of Great Britain’s classic theatrical works! Sir Peter Teazle’s marriage is not even a year old and it is already on the rocks: Lady Teazle is quickly falling for the charms of the dashing young Joseph Surface. But Joseph is only playing her to get to Maria, who stands to inherit a fortune. But Maria is in love with Joseph’s brother, Charles, the prodigal son that no one wants Maria to marry. Stirring it all up is the venomous, Lady Sneerwell, and her cadre of backbiters who spin a web of malicious slander that threatens the happiness of everyone they encounter. Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816), an Irish immigrant to Britain, was raised by theatrical parents and saw his first play, The Rivals, produced when he was 23. Other works include The Critic and a body of poetry that cemented his position as one of Britain’s great literary figures. Sheridan also served for 32 years as a member of the Whig Party in Parliament. He is buried in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey.

36th Season Tony Award Winner 1963 - Best Musical 1963 - Best Producer of a Musical (Harold Prince) 1963 - Best Author of a Musical (Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove)

"Thumbs up for this uninhibited romp!" -The New York Times “It’s funny, true nonsense! A merry good time!” -Herald Tribune

Presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI)

Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Based on the plays of Plautus Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a non-stop laugh-fest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and a showgirl or two. This unforgettable, hysterical musical allows a terrific ensemble of comedic actors to shine — ”something for everyone, a comedy tonight!”

Black Box Tony Award Winner 2009 - Best Play “[A] streamlined anatomy of the human animal…delivers the cathartic release of watching other people’s marriages go boom. A study in the tension between civilized surface and savage instinct, this play … is itself a satisfyingly primitive entertainment…”—NY Times.

god of carnage

Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

By Yasmina Reza

Translated By Christopher Hampton A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters. Christopher James Hampton was born in England in 1946. While at Oxford University, he wrote about his experiences with adolescent homosexuality in the play, When Did You Last See My Mother?. He then adapted the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses into both a stage and film version, the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1988. Mr. Hampton is also an accomplished translator, adapting published versions of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Ghosts, and Hedda Gabler.

Black Box Laurence Olivier Award Winner: 2004 - Best New Play "Energizing…a blindingly bright black comedy…[what makes] the unsettling and exhilarating new play from Mr. McDonagh…so gripping as theater is how narrative art becomes the play's and the character's very life blood." —NY Times. “[McDonagh is] a dangerously prodigious master of theatrical form with a talent that goes far deeper than most people understand…THE PILLOWMAN [is] thoroughly startling and genuinely intimidating.” —Chicago Tribune. Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

By Martin Mcdonagh With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm, The Pillowman centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art. Martin McDonagh was born March 26, 1970 and has written numerous plays, including The Leenane Trilogy and The Aran Islands Trilogy. He has also written for film and television and his short film, Six Shooter, won him an Academy Award in 2006. His other film works include In Bruges, The Guard, and Seven Psychopaths.

Black Box “The teeter-tottering test of wills that takes place in VENUS IN FUR makes even the most fraught encounter between a domineering director and a sensitive performer seem like a play date in the sandbox. Actors may be pleased to hear that in this ninety minutes of good, kinky fun, the upper hand does not necessarily belong to the usual suspect.” —NY Times.

"You want funny? You want sexy? Then you'll want to see VENUS IN FUR." —New Jersey Newsroom.

VENUS in fur

Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

By David ives

Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale, Venus in Fur. Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress—oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas’ interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. A mysterious, funny, erotic drama that represents yet another departure for the multifaceted David Ives. David Ives is probably best known for his evenings of one-acts, collected as All in the Timing (Vintage Books) and Time Flies (Grove Press). He lives in New York City with his wife, Martha.

All Aspects Teen Theatre

All Aspects Teen Theatre All Aspects Teen Theatre provides theatrical opportunities to local teens in the areas of acting, directing, designing, writing, and technical applications for the stage. The program appeals to those students who express an interest in the craft. It also aims to develop participants’ skills in “all aspects” of the theatre, rather than simply the on-stage elements. The goal is to broaden teens’ awareness and understanding of the discipline, while encouraging their creativity and fun. Cascades Theatre commits to keeping tuition at a minimum so that workshops are affordable and accessible to as many families as possible. As our theatrical community develops, we will establish local sponsorship and scholarship opportunities. We are excited about the prospect of engaging key supporters in the process!

Carol J. Bryant Memorial Scholarship The Carol J. Bryant Memorial Scholarship is for graduating seniors and students seeking to pursue post-secondary work in the performing arts. All Aspects Teen Theatre guarantees that 10% of its proceeds from workshops, advertisements, and sponsorships are set aside for this fund, in addition to 100% of concessions donations and all direct scholarship donations. The Scholarship will be awarded to college-bound students pursuing the areas addressed by All Aspects Teen Theatre. Annual scholarship amounts may vary. However, our goal is to award at least $500 per year.
