If this sensor registers contact with human skin, a cartridge is activated and everything immediately stops. The new Festool TKS 80 bench-mounted circular saw with SawStop technology.
Festool claims that with the launch of its new TKS 80, it will be launching the first portable table saw in Europe to be marketed with the tried-and-tested SawStop technology. It offers a unique feature to make life safer for kbb installers and other tradespeople by helping to protect them from serious cutting injuries.
About SawStop Technology
SawStop technology was originally developed by Dr Steve Gass in America. In 2017, the American company SawStop was integrated into the TTS group. Festool then began to develop a bench-mounted circular saw that included the precision and cutting quality Festool is renowned whilst integrating SawStop technology.
How SawStop Technology works
The heart of the technology is a cartridge that works together with a spring to push an aluminium block into the saw blade if it comes into contact with the user's skin during operation. The function is triggered by a capacitive sensor. If this sensor registers contact with human skin, a cartridge is activated and everything immediately stops. The saw blade stops in less than five milliseconds, disappearing into the machine bench and out of the hazard area. Subsequently, accidents that could have created life-changing injuries are reduced to just small scratches.
If the aluminium block has been triggered, the saw can be made fully ready to use again in just a few simple steps by replacing the saw blade and cartridge. This is undertaken by opening the cover, remove the old saw blade and cartridge, and replace them with the new set – simple!
The system will then check that they are fitted correctly. As soon as the LED constantly illuminates in green, work can continue.
A clear visual display means that users can easily see the current operating status of the TKS 80 bench-mounted circular saw. When a green LED is lit, the SawStop technology is ready to use. The SawStop technology can be switched off if the user wishes to do so, that even conductive materials can be machined using the saw.
Features of the TKS 80
The new TKS 80, aside from its safety aspect, which is an obvious advantage, has many other benefits. For example, the saw blade is angled, which significantly reduces kickback and ensures stability in cutting behaviour thus providing a clean splinter-free cutting result on both the top and bottom of the work piece.
The TKS 80 table saw provides users with the flexibility to do large cross cuts as the saw has a cutting height of up to 80mm! The variety of locking positions and fine adjuster ensures that precise cross cuts and rip cuts can be done easily. The system accessories mean that the TKS 80 table saw work surface can be extended in its length and width, the sliding table for cross-cutting up to 920 mm
As with all Festool products, the TKS 80 table saw has a dust extraction attachment with CLEANTEC extraction sleeve that allows users to work dust-free work and with a clear view of the work piece.
