Principios fundamentales Basic Principles
¿Tres principios a los que nunca renunciaría como arquitecta? 1. La base del diseño debe ser la estrategia. Se debe partir de a quién va dirigido el proyecto y qué función va a tener el espacio. 2. Reducir en todo sentido: consumo de energía y de recursos. Muchas veces en temas de sostenibilidad se ataja el problema cuando ya se dio, pero no se planea para evitar ese consumo innecesario. 3. La comunicación: a nivel de comunidad y en menor escala. Es la clave para el éxito de cualquier iniciativa. What are three principals that you would never give up as an architect? 1. The design base must be the strategy. You must start out from who will the project be geared to and what function the space will have. 2. Reduce in every way: energy and resource consumption. Many times on sustainability issues the problem is caught when it has already happened, but there is no planning to avoid this unnecessary consumption. 3. Communication: at a community level and on a lesser scale. It is the key to success in any initiative.

enior associate, designer and head of the sustainability office for Gensler Costa Rica, she centralizes her work on interior designing for local and multi-national companies. Her work often consists on intervening existing spaces to create ideal environments for performing different activities.
¿Qué entiende por sostenibilidad? Es el ahorro de recursos para no afectar el ambiente; pero cuando se está en un espacio que ya existe y con ciertas condiciones que respetar, realmente lo enfocamos en ser eficientes en la planificación para mejorar la calidad de esas áreas para las personas y así mejorar su productividad y calidad de vida.
What do you understand by sustainability? For me it is about saving resources to avoid affecting the environment; but when you are in an existing space and under certain conditions that must be respected, that is when we really focus on being efficient in planning to improve the quality of those areas for people and therefore improving their productivity and quality of life.
¿Qué es importante en estos espacios? Es fundamental tomar en consideración temas de sostenibilidad en el espacio interior, como la calidad del aire. Si bien en algunos casos se da la oportunidad de tener ventilación cruzada y estrategias un poco más pasivas, por lo general son proyectos donde la ventilación es mecánica. Tratamos de buscar formas de mejorar, desde la especificación de la alfombra hasta la pintura (que tengan bajas emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y niveles bajos de compuestos orgánicos volátiles o VOC).
What is important in these spaces? It is important to consider sustainability issues within the interior space, such as the air quality. While in some cases there is the opportunity of cross ventilation and more passive strategies, generally there are projects where the ventilation is mechanical. Then, we try to look for ways to improve them, from the specification of the carpets to the paint (that these have lower greenhouse gas emissions and lower volatile organic composition levels or VOCs).
¿Qué papel juega la tecnología? En espacios de trabajo, la tecnología es el pilar de la planificación del espacio: computadoras, impresoras, máquinas de aire acondicionado, termostatos y cómo se programan, cómo modificamos un espacio para que funcione adecuadamente según las zonas térmicas.
What role does technology play? In work spaces, technology is the pillar of space planning: computers, printers, air conditioning machines, thermostats and how they are programmed, how we modify a space for it to function adequately according to thermic areas.
¿Cuáles materiales destacan? Tratamos de buscar materiales naturales y con algún porcentaje de materia prima reciclada. Aunque tenemos acceso a muchos materiales importados, también buscamos proveedores locales y materiales nacionales, que la madera sea de crecimiento rápido y cultivada para ese uso.
What materials stand out? We try to look for materials that have some percentage of recycled raw materials, as well as natural ones. Even though we have access to many imported materials, we also look for local suppliers and national materials. We look for wood that is quick growing and cultivated for this use.
