Pro by's Lake is surrounded on the right (as you approach from the entrance to Castlethorn at Carysfort) by Irish yew and spring flowering Japanese cherries and on the other by a line of Scots pine with their distinctive orange bark. Between the lake and the grey house are an interesting collection of shrubs used in present day gardens, such as red berried conroneasters, yellow flowered mahonia, and blue flowered ceanorhus. Evergreen trees such as the blue Arias cedar and golden Leyland cypress, planted a few years ago, will in time replace the more mature trees. Walking past the lake, on the left, brings you to cypress trees - guardians to the entrance of the formal garden, with its concentric circles of clipped box hedges. Large pyramidal red berried hollies and Irish yew enclose this area from other parrs of the garden. The Irish yew originated in Co. Fermanagh. From a single tree plants were propagated and the Irish yew has since found its way into gardens and parks in temperate regions throughout the world. Another tree native to Ireland, the Strawberry Tree (Arbutus), is also found in the garden. The white bell shaped flowers and round strawberry like fruits are borne in Autumn. The Coastal redwood, native to California, is the world's tallest tree. It grows up to 112 metres tall and has an estimated life span of between 700 and 1,000 years. The specimen in this garden is a healthy infant with a long future. The Californian connection
