Home to 79 miles of picturesque coastline, our beaches and coastline provide something for everyone. Relax and unwind as you sit on the promenades at Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Southwold, watching the world go by as you take in the wonderful coastal views. Colourful, traditional beach huts can be hired on a daily, weekly or seasonal basis throughout the summer months Lifeguards keep a watchful eye over the resort beaches at Lowestoft and Southwold, from late May to early September. They also act as lost children meeting points and First Aid points should you need them. Getting away from it all, the picturesque rural beaches of Pakefield, Kessingland, Dunwich, Sizewell, Shingle Street and Thorpeness are ideal if you enjoy walks along the shoreline, wandering through the dunes or just relaxing and soaking up the sun in peaceful surroundings.

COUNTRYSIDE With stunning scenery, idyllic villages and beautiful rolling countryside, the wonderfully diverse landscape of the Suffolk Coast is perfect for all forms of outdoor recreation. The numerous rivers and their estuaries are teeming with wildlife during Autumn and Spring when many thousands of wading birds and wildfowl can be seen on the marshes, reed beds and coastal lagoons, including more unusual birds such as the Bittern, Marsh Harrier and the Avocet. The Broads also offer miles of peaceful waterways to explore. With extensive open land and superb long distance walks, the area has routes for both experienced walkers and those wishing to take things at a more leisurely pace. With no traffic queues or timetables to keep to and a gently rolling landscape, cycling and horse riding also provide wonderful ways to explore this part of the county. Passenger ferry boats link routes across some of the estuaries for cyclists and walkers.

Much of this coastal area is included within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - one of Britain’s finest landscapes. It covers 150 square miles of countryside, including lowland coastal scenery, wildlife-rich wetlands and the historic Sandlings Heath.

HERITAGE The area boasts a wide selection of cultural activity, whether its film, art, music, sculpture or crafts, your senses will be indulged during a visit to this charming part of the country. The Suffolk Coast is steeped in rich history and has famously inspired many artists, filmmakers and writers. Collections and displays range from the world famous Lowestoft Porcelain to one of the greatest archaeological finds of our time at Sutton Hoo. The Lowestoft and North Suffolk Maritime Museum sheds a fascinating insight into the area’s rich maritime history. Aviation is celebrated at the Flixton Aviation Museum, Debach and Parham Airfields and Bentwaters Cold War Museum. 200 years of local, social and industrial history are on display at the Long Shop Museum, Leiston, and there are a number of windmills, an 18th century Post Mill at Saxtead and the Woodbridge Tide Mill – one of the last working tide mills in the country. DAYS OUT Days out on the Suffolk Coast provide a range of exciting experiences from action and adventure to wonderful relaxation offering something to suit everybody. At Africa Alive! The Plains of Africa await you at this family friendly safari park. Meet giraffes, rhinos and zebras with a jeep tour of the paddock or view the lions up close from the lion lookout.

Children will love the opportunity to get close to the animals at Easton Farm Park or Pets Corner and if wildlife is your passion, then the local Wildlife Trust and RSPB Minsmere host a number of events throughout the year.

A visit to Snape Maltings will keep all the family happy, with shops and galleries, local produce, farmers markets, and a year round programme of arts and music events all in a beautiful setting on the edge of the River Alde.

DRINK From superb fresh fish straight from the quayside, to delicious rare-breed pork, from tiny micro breweries to local smokehouses and the oysters that Suffolk is famous for. The quality and variety of produce in Suffolk is as good as you’ll find anywhere. Food in Suffolk is taken very seriously. Locally produced drink is a speciality – why not enjoy a pint of ale brewed at the world famous Adnams of Southwold or St Peter’s Brewery near Bungay or a pint of Victoria bitter from Earl Soham? Aldeburgh Beach Aldeburgh is a fashionable resort, which retains its old world charm. Fishermen still pull their boats up onto the beach and sell their catch from huts nearby. The Moot Hall which houses the town’s museum, is a focal point with its ancient timbers and outside staircase. The Town Steps just off the High Street, offer a view over the town and out to sea. There are many independent shops and in June there is the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts, which was begun by the composer Benjamin Britten. Many of the events are held in Aldeburgh with the larger concerts and recitals held in nearby Snape Maltings Concert Hall.

Thorpeness is just two miles along the coast. From the beach you can see the “House in the Clouds” and windmill. The Meare offers excitement for children as they can row out to fairytale islands and explore! The RSPB’s flagship reserve at Minsmere is four miles from Aldeburgh and the National Trust’s Dunwich Heath is just eight miles away with the beautiful ruins of Leiston Abbey and the Long Shop Museum nearby.

Beccles Situated inland on the River Waveney, Beccles sits at the southern point of the Broads, offering visitors a peaceful haven to relax and unwind. The town has an interesting history with many fascinating landmarks including the church tower, which at 97 feet tall offers spectacular views of the town and surrounding area. The popular quayside area is home to several events including the annual town carnival & regatta and nearby the ‘Beccles Lido’, the town’s outdoor heated swimming pool, is a great day out for all the family. Bungay Town Centre Bungay is an oasis for those wanting to explore the more tranquil part of the Southern Broads. The quiet roads, rivers and countryside provide the perfect opportunity to explore by cycling, walking or even canoeing. Primarily built around the remains of the ancient Norman castle, the local landscape is dominated by the tower of St Mary’s Church. You can’t miss the famous Buttercross, once used as a prison but nowadays home to the weekly market. These and many other sights can be visited by following the Bungay Town Trail. Theatre and film lovers will love the renovated Fisher Theatre, a 19th century building on Broad Street, offering a wide programme of activities and 18

events as well as housing a café. With a tempting array of individual specialist and antique shops, a unique shopping experience awaits visitors to Bungay and when you’re ready for a break, you will find plenty of choice in Bungay’s restaurants, cafes and tearooms. The Bungay Real Ale Trail provides a great opportunity to sample a range of local ales, with eight of the original thirtythree 20th century drinking houses still open today.

FELIXSTOWE

Felixstowe Beach Felixstowe Have a great day out in Felixstowe and take advantage of the wide range of attractions this traditional resort has to offer. With a Victorian/ Edwardian influence, the town offers architectural interest and the extensive Spa Gardens line its long promenade, which is level with the sand and shingle beach. The resort is home to the Spa Pavilion Theatre, an independent cinema, a leisure centre and there are a wide range of amusements and children’s activities along the seafront. At Felixstowe Ferry, the foot/cycle ferry crosses the Deben estuary to Bawdsey, the home of Radar. There are many interesting walks along this stretch of coast and the area is ideal for bird watching.

Landguard Peninsular is home to a nature reserve, bird observatory, the historic fort and Felixstowe Museum as well as a foot ferry that links Felixstowe to Shotley and Harwich. The popular viewpoint area enables you to watch the biggest container ships in the world going in and out of the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe. Felixstowe is a truly traditional seaside resort that is perfect for visitors of all ages to discover.

FRAMLINGHAM

Framlingham Castle Dating back to Anglo Saxon times, Framlingham is an attractive market town, dominated by a 12th century Fortress. The Mere alongside Framlingham Castle is managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust and a circular footpath enables visitors to see wild flowers and wildlife. Framlingham church has parts dating from the 11th century. A beautiful hammerbeam roof and impressive tombs of the Howards make it worth a visit. The Market Hill contains a number of different period houses and the town has a selection of restaurants, pubs and cafĂŠs to suit a range of budgets and tastes.

HALESWORTH

Halesworth Church

Halesworth is a charming market town, which prides itself on a cultural blend of the arts, locally produced food, wines and small independent shops. The Cut is an urban sized centre for the arts with a year round programme of events while the Steeple End Gallery provides an attractive space for displaying contemporary paintings, sculpture, ceramics and textiles. Housed in the original railway buildings, the Halesworth and District Museum tells the story of the historic life of the town, with the Halesworth Town Trail providing the ideal opportunity to explore the town’s past including the 15th century Saxon Church.

Stretching along the banks of the River Blyth, Halesworth’s Millennium Green is rich with wildlife and flowers, providing two circular walks of up to two miles. The town also has a bowling green and an 18 hole golf course. Halesworth is a haven for food lovers, with its monthly produce market offering some of the finest foods from around the region. Complementing that, is wine from the local vineyard, where you can take a tour to see how it is produced.

LOWESTOFT & OULTON BROAD Lowestoft - Heart of The Sunrise Coast - is Britain’s most easterly town and is an ideal holiday destination for all ages.

Magical Waterland’, Oulton Broad provides the perfect opportunity to explore and enjoy one of the region’s highlights. Right at the centre of Oulton Broad you will find the Green Flag winning Nicholas Everitt Park, where you can sit back and relax to the sound of a brass band concert on a summer Sunday afternoon, enjoy the thrills of Thursday night powerboat racing or explore the Lowestoft Museum at Broad House, which houses an impressive collection of Lowestoft Porcelain. On the edge of Oulton Broad is Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve with more than 100 acres of grazing marsh and fen creating a haven for many different species of wildlife, plants and insects.


SOUTHWOLD & WALBERSWICK Nestled alongside the beautiful Suffolk Coastline, sitting on either side of the Blyth estuary, are Southwold and Walberswick.

Southwold Pier Southwold is the quintessential seaside resort with its simplicity in character and traditional nature creating the perfect haven from the demands of a modern society.

The High Street is the perfect location for some retail therapy alongside cafés and restaurants that serve quality food, exquisitely cooked and washed down with ale brewed at the local Adnams brewery.

The award-winning beach runs alongside rows of the famous Southwold beach huts, gleaming in the sunshine in their vibrant colours. The pier houses gift shops, a boardwalk cafe and the bizarre ‘Under the Pier Show’.

Take in the sights of the harbour and walk along the banks of the River Blyth, where you will find the bridge or foot ferry that will take you across the estuary to Walberswick.

The town is steeped in maritime history and its museum and Sailor’s Reading Room provide an insight into the town’s past. Maritime success relied upon the beacon from the Lighthouse, built in 1890 and standing an impressive 101 feet above the town.

Woodbridge Tide Mill The market town of Woodbridge nestles at the head of the tidal reaches of the river Deben and contains many fine buildings, including the picturesque Tide Mill. The Suffolk Punch Heavy Horse Museum is a unique attraction dedicated to the Suffolk breed. Close by is the Anglo-Saxon burial ground of Sutton Hoo – one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made. The river is ideal for yachting and the attractive riverside area boasts restaurants and a theatre. River trips offer a different perspective for the visitor and the town itself hosts many independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, offering a shopping experience which is just that little bit different. 24

In the surrounding area, the delightful town of Orford has retained its historic charm. The town’s famous oysters are harvested from the Butley River. The 12th century Norman Castle provides an impressive sight and Orford Ness, the largest vegetated shingle spit in Europe, is protected by the National Trust. RSPB Havergate Island bird sanctuary is famed for its Avocets.
