105Maple Leafs Trivia

.. .. 3

The Toronto Maple Leafs know the passion within the organization’s loyal fan base. There have been great moments in team history to draw on, and this season the group is trying to add a new layer of success. Last year saw progress in the tough Atlantic Division, resulting in a franchise record 115 points. All-Stars, records, trophies and career years were also individually accomplished. The Maple Leafs’ talent warrants optimism of another exciting era in franchise history.

The microscope of the Maple Leafs is always in focus throughout Toronto. It makes no difference if the club posts 20 wins like the 1984-85 squad or mimics the record 54 reached in 2021-22. Results come with opinions, rebuttals and decades of stories. The 1967 Leafs are still widely discussed today, and the 2022-23 squad hopes to leave the same lasting imprint on hockey’s landscape.

After winning the Hart, Rocket and Ted Lindsay awards last season, Auston Matthews aims to recapture the scorer’s touch that produced a club record 60 goals. Now the 25year-old has a crack at surpassing fifth all-time in Leafs goal scoring, currently held by Rick Vaive at 299.

Finding the back of the net is only one dimension of Matthews’s game today. Adding a bit more bite, the centre also set personal benchmarks in hits (67), blocks (62) and takeaways (92) in 2021-22. And seven games

into this season, he showed he’s not letting up, quickly dishing out 20 hits.

Joining Matthews as a First Team All-Star, local star Mitch Marner can now look to achieve the feat for a third straight season. After a career-high 97 points and 35 goals, the right winger is excited about what the team can do in his seventh NHL campaign.

“We’re excited about the opportunity ahead, ” Marner said heading into the season. “We have a lot of trust and believe in each other, and that’s certainly important for a team to win.”

William Nylander also comes off a personal best, striking 34 goals and the 80-point mark for the first time. Nylander expects to dazzle with his edgework and take another big step in his overall production. And his consistency will be central to Toronto’s success.

Blending nicely into the team’s makeup, All-Rookie forward Michael Bunting emerged as a Calder Trophy finalist after finishing tops among rookie scorers with 63 points. All signs point to further progress from the Scarborough native – who the Leafs unlocked nicely from Arizona. Bunting brings an unrelenting style of play to the ice and proved to have a nose for the net with 23 goals last season.

The club needs secondary

production to complement the high-octane areas of the offence. Players like Alexander Kerfoot, David Kämpf and Pierre Engvall can certainly help out further down the line-up. And there’s more experience to tap with another Scarborough native Wayne Simmonds, Ayr, Ontario’s Kyle Clifford, Calle Järnkrok, Denis Malgin, and Zach Aston–Reese.

Captain John Tavares came into the season on the heels of his career’s sixth 70-plus point output (76). The centre started this season with poise, compiling nine points through the first eight games. Within his 14th NHL season, Tavares wants nothing more than a taste of Lord Stanley’s mug. Growing

up around Toronto, he knows what being a Leafs fan is all about.

The same drive comes from the blue line. Mark Giordano is more than the heavy box-outs he provides in front of the net. He’s a former Norris Trophy winner, All-Star, and a captain for every organization he played for before returning home to Toronto. At 39, he’s a man on

a mission to bring the Stanley Cup to his backyard before a decorated career is all said and done.

Suiting up for his 10th season in Toronto, Morgan Rielly is the longest-standing Leaf on the

roster today. He’s grown to become a leader that bleeds blue and white. Rielly has evolved into the top-scoring defenceman from his 2012 draft class. And no other player selected that year has appeared in more NHL games. At 28, the Vancouver, BC native is in the prime of his career and climbing the Leafs record book.

To compliment Rielly’s ability to wheel the puck up the ice is fellow defensive stalwart TJ Brodie. Like teammate Jake Muzzin, he’s an Ontario-bred

product that inked a four-year deal with the Leafs and has the career experience Toronto needs along the blue line.

While veterans Jordie Benn and Victor Mete have also moved into the equation, the organization hopes some youth can fill out and support the defensive corps.

Rasmus Sandin entered this season with a new twoyear contract. Selected by the Leafs 29th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, the 22-year-old has now surpassed the 100-game mark in the NHL. D-men can require a little more seasoning, but Sandin’s +9 campaign, with added minutes, last season suggests everything is pointed in the right direction.

Meanwhile, Justin Holl has become a regular defensive presence on the right side. Considered a late bloomer, Holl broke out three seasons ago as a 27-year-old and needs to keep it all rolling.

Selected with the 17th overall draft pick in 2017, Timothy Liljegren took a nice step in his development last season. The young defenceman appeared in a career-high 61 NHL games, recording 23 points as a +15 player on the ice. Seeing early action on the team’s second Dpairing this season, he looks to make another nice step this season.

Up front, Nick Robertson, a second round pick in 2019, continues to work his way into the lineup. And the Leafs continue to monitor recent draft picks Matthew Knies, and Fraser Minten for new waves of talent on the horizon.

The most significant change for the Leafs heading into the season came in the crease. A goaltending tandem of Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov is a new look for the club this season. The Leafs believe they can

insolate whoever is in goal with confidence.

“We have two guys with strong NHL pedigrees wanting to be able to come in and bounce back,” said Leafs captain John Tavares about the team’s new goaltending. “They’re really looking forward to the opportunity because of the type

in to play their game. We want to build their confidence, use their maximum skill set to a high level that we can feed off of and visa-versa.”

of team we have and what we’re striving for to help get us over the top. It’s on us as a team to play well in front of them, help them get comfortable and settle

Murray aims to recapture the back-to-back Stanley Cup success he had with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. And Samsonov could be on the cusp of blooming into the prime of his career.

Last year Samsonov led the Washington Capitals goaltenders with 23 wins in 44 games. And the 25-year-old received a big

opportunity early this season, posting a 2.01 GAA, and a .932 save percentage through his first five starts for Toronto, with a 4-1 record.

Erik Källgren may also receive call-ups from the AHL this season. The Swedish goaltender got his first taste of NHL action last year, appearing in 14 games for the Leafs.

Holding the top power play across the NHL in 2021-22, Toronto recorded a 27.3% success rate. The squad also saw a 16-spot advancement in the penalty kill department, at 82.1%. The Leafs made strides that go beyond putting up goals last year. And those kinds of adjustments will support the goalies and the win column throughout the regular season and beyond.

As several Maple Leafs head into the respective prime of their careers, Leafs Nation should be interested in what could come as a result. With a nice collective of talent in place, this is a significant chapter in a story that will continue to be told for generations.l

Who’s the most significant centre in Toronto Maple Leafs history?Baby Boomers may cling to classics: Kennedy, Keon and Sittler. Generation X has fellow Hall of Fame names like Gilmour and Sundin. And Millennials may fixate their phones to feature Auston Matthews. The debate is subjective, but the profound impact centres have had on the franchise is undeniable.

Before Auston Matthews even stepped on the stage at the 2016 NHL Draft in Buffalo, the hockey world was aware that something special was coming Toronto’s way. And after he was selected 1st overall, Matthews wasted little time turning opinion into fact.

By opening night in Ottawa, the 18-year-old rookie made modern-day NHL history, scoring four goals in his debut against the Senators. But that was just the start. Things accelerated in a 40-goal campaign, as Matthews became the first Leaf to win the NHL’s Calder Trophy since Brit Selby in 1966.

Coming off six consecutive playoff appearances and four seasons with 40 or more goals, the FirstTeam All-Star continues to help raise the bar around the organization.

Last season Matthews earned the Ted Lindsay

Mats Sundin

Award as the most outstanding player selected by his peers and showed a new level of play. Among a handful of accolades was a second straight Rocket Richard Trophy, breaking the franchise record for the most Leafs goals, with 60, in the process. And after he yanked the Hart Memorial Trophy away from Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, he now sits with Babe Pratt (1944) and Ted Kennedy (1955) as the Maple Leafs to receive the NHL’s MVP.

However, there’s more the 25-year-old hunts for beyond individual hardware to place on his mantle. The ultimate team success of winning a Stanley Cup remains the biggest driver moving forward.

“I just continue to try and improve and take it all in stride,” Matthews said about his success heading into this season’s 82-game grind. “It means a lot to be named to those awards; there’s a lot of hard work that is put into those things. But at the same time, we’re trying to accomplish something bigger than individual awards, and that’s obviously winning the Stanley Cup. I try to continue to improve, put my best foot forward, be a leader on this team and lead by example every day.”

Matthews and captain John Tavares continue to centre the two top lines, which is a luxury few NHL teams possess. Tavares was a highly sought-after free agent ready to return to his hometown roots in the summer of 2018. Heading into his fifth season as a

Maple Leaf, he’s accumulated 274 points in 280 games and ranks 14th among active NHL scorers. And Toronto’s stability at centre today is something unseen since the mid-to-late 1990s, when fellow centres

Mats Sundin and Doug Gilmour teamed up.

Gilmour was a central piece in a record 10-player trade that former Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher orchestrated on a frigid January day in 1992. Moving closer to his Kingston homestead, Gilmour immediately became a two-way force for the Leafs, capturing the Selke Trophy in 1992-93. With his tenacious style, the centre established club records in career playoff points (77) and assists (60), with an array of memorable moments throughout 52 postseason games as a Leaf. Gilmour also set the team’s single-season records for points (127) and assists (95), finishing seventh and fourth in NHL points during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 campaigns.

The 1990s saw big trades swirl into a fun era for Toronto. And Gilmour proved to be the captain’s bridge between fan favourite Wendel Clark and a young Swedish star on the rise during that time frame.

Mats Sundin arrived to join forces with Gilmour in the summer of 1994, following another one of the most impactful trades in club history. In a deal that included Clark’s departure to Quebec, the big centre was the prized gem in return.

Initially the Nordiques’ 1st overall draft pick in 1989, Sundin would flourish in a new hue of Maple Leafs blue. From 1995 to 2008, the centreman rewrote the club’s record books, becoming the first European to wear the ‘C’ for Toronto (from 1997-2008). He collected franchise records for most 20goal seasons (13) and 30-goal seasons (10). And throughout his 13 years in Toronto, Sundin was named an NHL Second-Team AllStar twice. He reached the postseason eight times, advancing to the second round five times and captained the team to the Eastern Conference Finals twice.

In the end, Sundin became the club’s all-time leader in goals (420) and points (987) throughout 981 regular season games. However, the Hall of Famer’s class on and off the ice is perhaps his most defining attribute.

“Mats didn’t have a selfish bone in his body. He had a rare and enviable combination of talent, competitiveness and humility,” late Leafs head coach Pat Quinn once said about his star player. “There is no question that Mats ranks among all the

great captains in Leafs history. He was the most unselfish player I have ever coached in the NHL. I can’t remember too many players – let alone stars – that showed as much excitement when a teammate scored as when he scored. Rarely did I have the privilege of coaching a player that cared so deeply and emotionally about his teammates. That’s what made Mats so great. He was the ultimate professional.”

Sundin was the face of the Toronto Maple Leafs during a transitional era. As the team said

(six goals and four assists) versus the Boston Bruins remains a single-game NHL record today. That spring, the team’s captain also joined Maurice Richard and Newsy Lalonde in postseason hockey history, tying a league record with five goals in an 8-5 victory over the Flyers.

Within 844 games played for Toronto, Sittler recorded 389 goals and 916 points. And combing the team record books, he sits high in several categories: including second in goals, third in assists, second in points and first in hat tricks (18).

Two years removed from becoming the first Leaf to hit the 100-point marker, in 1977-78 Sittler amassed a career-high 117 points. The Hall of Famer led the Maple Leafs in points eight consecutive seasons, from 1973 to 1980, and remains a central figure around the organization today.

When Sittler first walked into Toronto’s dressing room back in 1970, a star centre was there as team captain to show him how it was done.

capturing the Calder Trophy. Most of his 15 years as a Maple Leaf came in the heart of the franchise’s most dominant era.

“Our goal was to win the Stanley Cup or die trying,” Keon once described the teams of the 1960s.”

In 1962, Keon became a Stanley Cup champion in just his second NHL season. The following year he led the Leafs in playoff scoring, sealing the championship with two shorthanded goals to clinch the Cup against the Red Wings. In 1964, Keon’s Game 7 hat trick against the Canadiens propelled the Maple Leafs to a third straight finals appearance; before Toronto won a third straight Stanley Cup by defeating the Red Wings. In 1967 the Leafs beat Montreal for their fourth Cup in six years, as Keon would earn the Conn Smythe Trophy in the process. Two years later George Armstrong, the longestserving captain in franchise history, handed the star centre the C.

Awarded the Lady Byng Trophy twice as a Leaf, Keon arrived at the perfect time for the club. Next to fellow Hall of Fame centres Red Kelly and Bob

Pulford, he helped fill the void felt from the departure of Ted Kennedy in the late-1950s.

Pulford is perhaps one of the most underrated players in Leafs history. The centre’s career came at the pinnacle of the Leafs glory in the 1960s, winning four Stanley Cups.

Kelly arrived in Toronto in 1959, already a four-time

Before serving as a member of parliament, Kelly also received his fourth and final Lady Bing Trophy in 1960-61. After retiring as a champion in 1967, Red was never far removed from the game, stepping in to coach the Leafs for four seasons in 1970s.

Stanley Cup winner with the Red Wings. The first defenceman in NHL history to win the Norris Trophy, he switched to the centre position and helped steer the Maple Leafs to four Stanley Cup championships in eight seasons.

Thriving up the middle, Kelly accumulated the most playoff points (55) of any Maple Leaf during the dynasty of the 1960s. A three-time 20-goal man with Toronto, he led the team in assists twice, playing on a line with fellow Hall of Famer Frank Mahovlich.

Before the Leafs dynasty teams in the 1960s, centre Ted Kennedy helped set the table in the ‘40s and ‘50s. He was a member of the first team in NHL history to capture three consecutive Stanley Cups (1947, 1948 and 1949). And the centre’s third-period goal in Game 6 of the 1947 Stanley Cup Finals proved to be the game-winner against the Habs to start the dynasty.

The Hall of Famer was captain of Toronto’s championship squads of 1949 and 1951. He was the second Maple Leaf to claim the Hart Trophy (in 1955), and arrived in the footsteps of perhaps the most outstanding athlete in Leafs history.

On the ice, centre Syl Apps was a fluid skater, accurate passer and owned a quick shot. He also excelled in football at Hamilton’s McMaster University and represented Canada as an

The Hall of Famer first burst onto the NHL scene in 1936-37, earning Rookie of the Year honours after finishing second in league scoring, with 45 points. The centre’s first of three Stanley Cups as team captain came in 1942. And

following military service, he returned in time for the 1945-46 season, resuming his captaincy for three more seasons. Averaging more than a point per game throughout his career, Apps helped the team recapture Stanley Cup glory in 1947, retiring as a champion again in 1948.

Legendary centres like Apps, Kelly and Pulford helped make the history of the Maple Leafs richly unique. While Auston Matthews and John Tavares keep the buds blooming today.l

“I enjoy my job now more than I ever have.”

A Century Of Blue And White Has Taught Morgan Rielly More Than Just Hockey

Preparation and success have walked hand-inhand throughout Morgan Rielly’s career. But some things are better learned empirically.

Now in his 10th NHL season, the Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman has become a staple of consistency and leadership for the club. And though Rielly has consciously embraced his

veteran role, and the intangibles it requires, his lived experience is what’s put him in a position to thrive as a focal point on and off the ice.

“I feel very fortunate that I’ve experienced a lot,” Rielly said, sitting in his locker after an earlyNovember practice in Toronto. “Our team now is in a different state than it was when I got here. And I've been fortunate enough to be a part of some change, meet lots of people, have experienced lots of different forms of coaching and leadership. And I've tried to learn from those things.”

Rielly has seen a wide gamut of events since he first arrived in the NHL in 2013, including four head coaches and the ascension of a talented squad that has grown together while putting itself back into Stanley Cup contention.

Amid growing pains and wide eyes, Rielly persisted in his development, both physically and mentally. Day after day, the 19-year-old rookie transformed himself into the 28-yearold leader, an alternate captain and an integral

19

part of a Maple Leafs core that has continued its upward trajectory in 2022-23.

“I enjoy my job now more than I ever have,” said Rielly. “When you put good people around one another, it can really create a good culture.

“I certainly feel almost like I'm just getting started.”

There’s real value in maintaining that fresh feeling, even as a 10-year veteran. Rielly and the Maple Leafs’ current group are still searching for a deep playoff run, and the ability to absorb the important lessons while maintaining the joy of coming into work every day can prove crucial through the ups and downs of a Stanley Cup chase.

While taking in every lesson, the will to win has only grown. And that’s at least part of the reason why Rielly has become one of this team’s most important leaders.

“I think there's a portion of it that just happens naturally,” Rielly said with a modest shrug. “During [your later years] you kind of realize that it's an

production increased from year to year.

He jumped from 27 points in the 2016-17 season to 52 in the next campaign. The best year of his career came in 2018-19, when Rielly posted 72 points – third-most among defencemen – the same year Toronto welcomed back hometown product John Tavares. Last year, Rielly had 68 points and he picked up where he left off in 2022-23.

Through successes and shortcomings, what remains at the forefront are fond memories and the relationships he’s built along the way.

“Now when I look back on the early days of my career, I just think of the people that I got to meet and teammates I got to play with,” said Rielly. “It’s not as much about hockey as it is the experiences that you've gained and what you've learned along the way.”

As the new era arrived and cemented itself, so did Rielly’s status as the bedrock of the Maple Leafs’ defence.

“I feel like we’re in a position now where it’s as good as it’s ever been to be a member of this team,” Rielly said. “I feel very lucky.”

opportunity to challenge yourself to accept more responsibility to grow as a human being. For me, that’s a lot of fun.”

It didn’t take long for Rielly to understand what it meant to play hockey in Toronto.

As a rookie in 2013, he joined a group of defencemen that included players such as Dion Phaneuf and Carl Gunnarsson. The Maple Leafs were fresh off a heartbreak at the hands of the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and about to embark on a three-year postseason drought in a city that expects excellence.

“I think those early years, when I first got here, there was a lot to be learned and a lot to adjust to,” said Rielly. “That’s kind of the way that I approached it. And to be in a position we are now, we’re a confident group and we’ve had some good seasons. We’re still on an upward swing and we’re building towards achieving a goal together.”

While the Maple Leafs continued to add talent through the draft and free agency, Rielly’s

As for playing in perhaps the most hockeyhungry city in North America, Rielly has found fulfillment in embracing the spotlight.

“Playing on this team, in Toronto, it can be as scary as you want it to be, or it can be as amazing and great as you want it to be,” he said. “With this team and the people we have, we're able to just be supportive of each other and be all in it as a group, be in it together. There's nothing to worry about. I think that this is an amazing place to live. I think it's a cool place to experience.”

Those experiences don’t limit themselves to the rink.

Rielly, who grew up a Maple Leafs fan, has been involved in community work since before he was drafted with the fifth-overall pick in 2012. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rielly made sizeable donations to health-care workers in the Toronto area. He’s also taken a vested interest in causes involving cancer research and the wellbeing of those impacted by the disease.

20
“I think those early years, when I first got here, there was a lot to be learned and a lot to adjust to.”
Rielly has found fulfillment in embracing the spotlight
22

In Rielly’s eyes, immersing himself in the community is an inextricable part of becoming a reference point on the Leafs.

“Our organization does a great job of leading from the front,” he said. “As a young player, it really doesn't take long to realize that. And after you experience doing some community things with the team and you realize the reach and responsibility that you have, to take advantage of that opportunity.”

Not only does community work serve as a compass in a fast-paced day-to-day, but it also keeps Rielly – as well as other NHLers – in touch with the city and fans.

“I enjoy that part of it,” said Rielly. “I've experienced all different things in that realm and that's been a real highlight for me. Whenever you get a chance to, you know, whether it's go to a hospital or go to a hockey rink, it's a cool opportunity to put things in into perspective, and it's always a lot of fun.”

It also has him close to his roots.

Before joining the Maple Leafs,

Rielly played in the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors, just one among many stops on his way to the NHL. His last CHL season before being drafted was marred by a bad knee injury that caused Rielly to miss a large part of the season. Still, he returned to the ice before the year was done and did enough to guarantee a Top 5 spot in the NHL that year.

Now, when a rosy-cheeked Rielly looks back on those days after practicing in the Maple Leafs’ facility on the outskirts of Toronto, there’s an air of pride in acknowledging how much he’s learned and lived through playing the game he loves.

“As a young person, you're just trying to, you know, make good grades and make the team that you're trying out for,” he said. “I never really looked too far into

the future. But I guess how I look at it now is it's an opportunity to be the person that young version of yourself wanted to be. And that’s pretty unique. I feel very thankful for that opportunity. So, I try not to waste it.”

It may seem a bit odd that Rielly can reminisce or impart wisdom before even turning 30, but that in itself speaks to his process of maturing and contribution on hockey’s biggest stage.

“I feel like the luckiest guy in the world,” said Rielly. “I try not to put too much emphasis on the bad stuff. You learn to roll with the punches and you learn to be comfortable in your own skin and just take it as it comes. You know, do your best to perform your best every day and be a good human being, be a good teammate.”l
