Fiddler of Dooney Competition Sligo Live and CCE Sligo Town Branch co-host the Fiddler of Dooney Competition inspired by the W.B Yeats poem of the same name. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. The roll of previous winners reads like a Who’s Who of traditional fiddling and includes Matt Cranitch, Cathal Hayden, Liz Kane, Paddy Glacken, Bríd Harper, Antóin MacGabhann and Seamus and Manus Maguire. Since Sligo Live and CCE first hosted the competition, the winners have been Tara Breen 2006, Laura Beagon 2007, Bronwyn Power 2008, Aoife Ní Bhroin 2009, Rhona Lynch 2010, Niall Murphy 2011, Lucia McPartlin 2012 Lydia Warnock 2013 and last year’s winner, Darragh Curtin from Brosna, Co. Kerry.

The standard of playing is a joy to behold. Winners have come from all over the country and from among traditional musicians based overseas.Competitors need not be tied to any rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the Sligo style with its infectious lilt. This year’s adjudicators are Laura Beagon and Ryan Molloy. SEE www.sligolive.ie for Full information and ENTRY FORM
