Fast food founder’s home hits market by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com
James Mattei doesn’t have the name recognition of fast-food titans Ray Kroc or Dave Thomas, but the founder of the Checkers restaurant chain has dabbled in fast cars, luxury yachts and mansions. Mattei and his wife, Sharon, put their 12,000square-foot home in the gated Seven Eagles subdivision on the real estate market last month. They are seeking $6,850,000, making it the priciest in the city. Mattei bought the home from motorsports mogul Felix Sabates in September 1997, paying nearly $1.5 million. Mattei sold the home to his firm, United Property Group LLC, for $2.3 million in November 1999. The county sends tax bills for the property to an office at the Morrocroft Centre, the same suite connected to United Aircraft Holdings, United Yacht Group and Combined Lending Group. All are Mattei firms. Dickens Mitchener & Associates is brokering the sale of the French Provincial home, which overlooks the seventh green of the Quail Hollow Golf Course. It has a first-floor master suite and four guest suites. It’s bigger than the 7,800-square-foot waterfront mansion the Matteis sold last summer on Everglades Island for $13 million, according to a report from the Palm Beach Daily News. Business Alabama has described Mattei as “a legendary Midas of business. The real estate
developer is best known nationally for founding the Checkers drive-in burger concept in the mid1980s. After leaving Checkers in the mid-1990s, Mattei shifted gears to NASCAR. He partnered with driver Geoff Bodine to launch Mattei Motorsports in 1997. Mattei sold the team in 2000.
South Charlotte’s top luxury homes James Mattei’s home in the Seven Eagles subdivision is the most expensive in Charlotte. These homes are not far behind: • U.S. Sen. Robert Pittenger and his wife, Suzanne, are asking for $6.75 million for their 13,898-square-foot home overlooking the Quail Hollow Golf Course. The Pittengers made their fortune in real estate. • Felix Sabates owns a home three doors down from the Pittengers. He’s seeking $5.25 million for his 8,000-square-foot house. Sabates owns professional sports teams in the NBA and NASCAR, as well as Mercedes-Benz of South Charlotte. • Conterra CEO Stephen Leeolou and his wife, Mary, are selling their 14,000-squarefoot home in Foxcroft for nearly $5 million. Leeolou co-founded Vanguard Cellular Systems in the early 1980s, which was sold to AT&T in 1999. He later founded the SouthStar Capital investment firm.
