Abjection: The Grotesque and the Decadent with Darian Bianco

ONLINE: Humankind has always been fascinated by extremes: what is extraordinarily beautiful, extraordinarily ugly, and beyond societal norms. If you find these ideas appeal to you more than usual, how do you capture these experiences and portray them in your, whether written or visual? In this course we will discuss examples of abjection, grotesquery, and decadence, look at how they can be effectively deployed in writing and film-writing, and end with a writing exercise to create a randomly generated scene to springboard your work. Becoming an Outdoor Writer with Bill Carman

LONG: Outdoor Writing as a genre, can take many forms. It can be creative nonfiction (Steven Rinella), fiction (Ernest Hemingway), or combinations of both (Norman Maclean). The genre can include book-length essays, novels, weekly newspaper columns, and the most common, magazine stories. The market is extensive. The outdoor industry adds $70 billion to the American economy, and the people spending that money enjoy reading about the object of their passion. This class is designed to help writers produce stories and books that will enter that market and to assist experienced writers in improving their skills. This class will encourage open dialogue and sharing writing and writing experiences. Topics will include: Choosing Subjects, Establishing Your Voice, Opening Lines, Research, Narrative, Cliffhangers, Format, Illustrations, The Markets, and Getting Published. Math Appreciation through Dungeons & Dragons with Elaphe Crabb

Thursdays, June 6–August 29 (no class July 4), 5:15–7:15 PM • FREE GRADES 6–9: Join us for an adventure in learning! This class uses the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons to show kids how fun critical thinking, teamwork, and math can be. Through cooperative storytelling, kids learn to work together to solve problems with the tools provided. Math topics covered range from addition and multiplication to algebra and probability, depending on the individual student's needs. Both new

and returning students are welcome! Elaphe Crabb holds multiple degrees in math and engineering from the University of Kentucky. He works with private students in multiple subjects and education levels.

Writing the Dystopian Landscape with H Dietrich

Saturday, June 19–July 30, 3:30–5:00 PM • FREE

GRADES 9–12: From Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series to AJ White's debut novel Hell Followed With Us, YA dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction is a useful tool for us to think about the world we inhabit and the challenges we face as a society. This class is centered around teens creating their own dystopias and using tropes associated with the genre (everything from AI to evil corporations to kids surviving in the wilderness) to explore ideas of inequality, community, and resistance. H Dietrich is a recent MFA graduate from the University of South Florida; they have previously taught at the Carnegie Center and are excited to return.

Help Your Child Become a Successful Reader with Carol June Franks

FOR ADULTS: Reading is an essential skill for success. As a parent, guardian, or teacher of young children, there are simple ways you can help children become better readers. The presenter will engage participants in learning the "7 Keys to Comprehension" that will help your kids "read it and get it." This class will be designed for adults working with children ages 3-11. The goal is to engage participants in research-based ways to help children enjoy reading and learn to become better readers. Carol June Franks is a retired teacher who focused on teaching children to become better readers and writers. * REGISTRATION for this course includes a copy of the book.
