Carnaby.co.uk Foreword This Christmas I was in Carnaby looking for a present for my 12 year old daughter Georgina when I found myself drifting again into the Lomography Gallery store on Newburgh Street to look at their range of micro cameras and 360 lenses, a feast for the amateur photographer. What better to get for a child who is already fixated on her iPhone screen than a different sort of screen, a lens for looking up and around at the world. The added benefit was this: it would mean goodbye digital and hello analogue. The camera I bought her was an instant one, that hummed and whirred and printed out the photograph then and there. “And you kids thought you invented Instagram,” I said as she took her first pictures.

It might well be why, when I was moving flats, I felt drawn back to it. There is also something special about this area; the urbane feel brought by the local media and fashion companies dotted around and what you feel is the energy of a historic area thriving in the modern day. The retro-styled instant pictures we have capture a little bit of both worlds. And it’s a great playground for young and a little bit older alike. Joy Lo Dico Editor of Londoner’s Diary in the Evening Standard and founder of The Trouble Club Find out about the latest collections, events, new stores, restaurants and pop-up shops on Carnaby.co.uk. Include #Carnaby in your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts and see them featured on Carnaby.co.uk’s real time social media hub. Early January was spent photographing Carnaby and the surrounding streets, the patch of London we’ve come to think of as home since moving to this area three years ago. Almost every corner has a clothes store or restaurant or something unusual which one of us drags the other into. Georgina, decked out in her Jack Wills checked shirt, oohs and aahs and begs to go into Choccywoccydoodaah to ogle their cake towers of chocolate and marshmallow. I love the eccentric clothing at Bolongaro Trevor and both of us will happily spend an hour at the bar of Polpo with bowls of meatballs and spaghettini, or grazing in Kingly Court at Stax and Pizza Pilgrims. It was the obvious location for some quick lessons in photography and the backdrop of cobbled stones streets and brightly lit shops made for a magic tour. The prints come out with an over-exposed glare, 70s in feel, and it reminded me of my own very early memories of Carnaby Street, as a two year old on the steps of my parents’ Italian café in Foubert’s Place around 1979, with a punk with a blue fin walking by and my mother chatting away about whichever band of the day had been playing in the Foubert’s Club next door. Even after they moved to West London in the 1980s there were ritual weekend trips back to Carnaby Street and Berwick Street market, and there was always a sense of treat.

Diversify Your Denim Lavish your denim with new delights as shearling and crystals replace rips and tears. Denim is taking on new depth this season with formal jackets, jumpsuits and matchy-matchy two pieces. Taking a trip to Diesel will make you reassess your trusted blue staples.

lounger when you swap your suede jacket from Scotch & Soda, for circular sunglasses. This isn’t boho as you once knew it, its an affluent bohemian. Work It In White Delve into the history books and take note from the Victorians by tapping into your romantic side. Get crafty with your whites by keeping an eye out for intricate details such as embroidery anglaise and clever cutwork. All you need is Mr Darcy to finish off the look - alas something you can’t find on Carnaby Street but the likes of Monki will allow you to tap into this trend regardless.

Earn Your Stripes Squeeze out the spots from your wardrobe and replace them with stripes. Stripes hurtle into new sartorial spheres this season, with bygone deck chair prints screaming nautical niceties at Brandy Melville whilst the print also springs into sportswear seperates at adidas Originals which are given a strong footing when accessorised with Superga trainers.

Cut It Out Take the reveal and conceal trend to new heights as the temperature rises. Cool down simple silhouettes with curved cuts and girly geometric slices, as seen at AQ/AQ Woman. Flashing flesh on the hip this season will become as common place as making the most out of your midriff.

Seventies Sass Swing out of the sixties and into the seventies for spring/summer 2015 by kissing goodbye to skinny trousers and flirt with flares instead. Team that key piece of the season with billowing bohemian blouses from OTHER. The look can go from the city street to the sun

Denim Denim jeans are a staple in nearly every mans wardrobe but this season denim really took the catwalks by storm. We saw everything from 70’s style flares to embroidered shorts and denim suits. The denim jacket was also key and both Levi’s and Diesel have a great selection of this all time classic.

Trench Coats The trench coat is an all time classic but this season designers showcased alternative versions to the traditional design by introducing unusual fabrications and bold prints. If however, a classic style is more your thing, then take a trip to The Kooples who never fail to create a great trench.

Print Print is a huge trend this summer. But if fully printed garments are not quite your thing then investing in something slightly more subtle such as a patterned tie or pocket square is a great alternative. British brand Peckham Rye always have a fantastic selection of print based accessories which tap perfectly into this trend.

Satchels The man bag is no longer a trend it’s a staple and this season it’s all about the satchel. Check out Ben Sherman for a great canvas version. Retro Trainers Trainers have been sneaking their way on to the catwalk for a long while and spring summer 2015 was no exception. But if you‘ve not yet invested in this trend then keep it classic and go for a retro sport style such as the Superstar shoe by adidas Originals.

Long Shorts Short shorts have been the go-to style for several seasons but SS15 sees the return of the long short. Check out Amsterdam based brand Scotch & Soda for a great selection of styles including cargo, denim and chino all with a long cut.

Beauty Trends

Lisa Potter-Dixon, Make up artist

is a beautiful, peaceful space that will really let you rest your mind. If you’re in need of an extra boost, I swear by the Walk In Back Rub. A 15 minute massage once a week will help to diminish that knotty back and your stress levels.

Chicken Tikka Marsala Not only is this one of my favourite takeaway’s but it is now the official pantone colour of the year. That’s right, Marsala is the colour we’ll all be wearing in 2015. This rich, earthy tone is great for all skin tones. Make up wise, the obvious way to wear it is via a lipstick, although I think it can also look incredible as an eyeshadow. In fact, combine the two and use your lipstick as an eyeshadow. Pat it onto the lid with your finger and pair it with brown mascara, such as Benefit’s bad gal brown, to enhance the richness of the tone.

“It’s all about the brow no treble” Ah Eyebrows! One of my favourite things to talk about. Thanks to Miss. Cara the big brow has been back for the past couple of years, and it’s staying. A perfectly groomed brow is like an instant eyelift without the needles. Don’t fear if your brow hair is minimal, or equally if it is seemingly overgrown, Benefit have the answer. They’ve been waxing eyebrows since 1976 don’t you know?! The flagship boutique on Carnaby Street is the perfect place to get your brows waxed and tinted. The brow experts will map your brows to get the perfect shape for you. Don’t leave without a brow tint, this makes your brows look fuller and thicker instantly. Wow those brows ladies.

Supermodel skin Dewy, illuminous skin is staying put this year. Good news for supermodels, not such good news for us mere mortals. Don’t panic, there is hope! Great looking skin starts with the prep. Moisturise daily using Benefit’s B.right skincare collection to rehydrate and brighten your skin. For an extra treat, the Cowshed facial is dreamy. You’ll go in feeling slightly dull and come out with a radiant glow that even Rosie.H.W would be proud of.

Hair we go again The 70’s are back. Boho waves, long pony tails, braids and twists are all the rage this year. Perfect for the girl on the go. Adding accessories to your hair is a cool way to vamp up your look. I heart American Apparel’s velvet bows and Monki’s metallic pony tail ties, after all, life is too short to have boring hair.

Rest the stress If you’re anything like me, 2015 is already jam-packed. It’s so easy to forget to look after yourself. Yoga is my savior. Even an hour a week to forget about the outside world will make such a difference. triyoga in Kingly Court

Food Spy Pizza Pilgrims

Pizza Pilgrims started life in 2011, after driving a three wheeled Piaggio Ape back from Italy on a 6 week “Pizza Pilgrimage” of discovery. We are only interested in making the best pizzas possible - with handmade, 48 hr proved dough and ingredients shipped in from Naples. The pizza is accompanied by Italian wines & craft beers - as well as fussball, arcade machines and tunes you have not heard in a while! Last year - we launched our very own limoncello in collaboration with Chase Vodka. Sohocello fuses the most fragrant Amalfi lemons with England’s finest spirit in hand-crafted, small batches. It’s the authentic taste of summer days and mellow evenings, by the sea or in the city – and Kingly Court’s unique alfresco courtyard could have been designed for it. Cin cin! 39

History

In the 1960s Carnaby became the epicentre of what is famously known as swinging London. No shopping street in the world can boast such a real connection with music and popular culture quite like Carnaby Street. Music and fashion have walked hand in hand ever since the young entrepreneur John Stephen opened his first boutique here in 1958. It became a mecca for the new mods, into their sharp threads. John Lennon, The Who, The Kinks, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix were all regular visitors - now that’s rock ‘n’ roll, and we like it. Carnaby was not only a place where the musicians came to shop, they came to hang out and play in clubs like The Roaring Twenties in the 1950s (now Ben Sherman) and Bag O’ Nails (where Paul McCartney met Linda Eastman). In the 1980s, Carnaby saw legendary club nights Mud Club and Batcave alongside the HQs of iconic music magazines NME and Smash hits, with Boy George working in a shop in the Newburgh Quarter.

No wonder Liam Gallagher chose Carnaby Street as the flagship location for his Pretty Green brand, alongside other music focused brands Dr Martens, Fred Perry, Puma and The Great Frog, who make jewellery for the likes of Iron Maiden, Kate Moss, Johnny Depp and The Arctic Monkeys. Music is simply built into the very fabric of the area. Check out Carnaby Echoes, the free walking app tour which brings the music history of the area to life as you walk the streets. Carnaby has unveiled hidden layers of music heritage via a series of plaques on key buildings in a commission by artist Lucy Harrison.
